Rip 2021

July ?? - Sääksilive, Satakunta #1, Finland : Ospreys +Alma & Ossi's older Ospret S#1.

Update for viewtopic.php?p=479224#p479224
After the death of Alma the mother and her youngest ospret, Ossi their Mate and father was unable to take care of the 2 other youngs S#1 & #2, it was decided to find them a new nest ...

On a french forum i found these news:

The 2 surviving osprets were banded and transferred to another nest. One of the two was later found dead in the new nest without knowing the cause of death. It was the one who had also been attacked by the raven but who had survived S#1. :cry1:
On 22-07-2021 the third yellow ringed "SRS" S#é was seen flying around its new nest. :thumlft: :rh:

https://www.saaksilive.fi/2021/06/25/al ... a-vastaan/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt-cTY05Nj8

Just before the attack, the younger S#3 is the closer one from the raven which didn't let it a chance....
S#2 is the middle one and at the beginning it went to the left side of the nest. Now he is the legacy of the entire family except Dad Ossi who stayed in the original nest area. S#1 is the other one who tried to attle against the Raven. Fortunately Dad came back before it was too late for S#1 and S#2.
2021-07-28_13h38_10.jpg
S#1 was up defending its nest but already too late for S#3 (attacked first and behind S#1) who will died many minutes later :cry1: , S#2 the only living one is on the left side of the nest
2021-07-28_13h29_14.jpg
On the pic, the 3 ospreys are insight, the left one is the younger who died, in its nest against its siblings, this 06-25 like its mother Alma. The right low one is for me the unique survivor who was seen a couple of days ago flying around its new nest :woohoo: . The third one, between both is the guy whose body was found in the new nest. RIP little one :cry1: :brknhrt:
2021-07-28_11h29_55.jpg

One more time this season, a wondeful little Angel had flown away... :( :cry1: :brknhrt: :cryhanky:

I'm so sad for you little S#1, Mom Alma and S#3 were close to you at that moment. S#2 was also close to you in the nest and i'm sure even Dad Ossi ressented something in his heart. 🙏 :brknhrt: :cryhanky:

Fly high and freely with always a full crop mes petits amis :brknhrt:

2021 July 29

By dint of enduring and sharing these pains, these sorrows, this sadness and all these tears with all our little feathered friends, young or old, for that matter, maybe one day I will have to withdraw completely for an indefinite period because that season has been particularly terrible despite some wonderful and happy successes.

It is possible that I scatter a little too much in the different nests or there is a real hecatomb this year in terms of the survival of the chicks. Considering what I read in the various forums, I think more for the hecatomb.

mid July - Redwood-Big Sur, Ca : Condor Mom PNP #438 Pinnacles National Park Female condor.

This morning i visited https://explore.org/livecams/condors/co ... astle-nest

VWS Zoom Chat🐦Dr.Alex Herman Of The Oakland Zoo On Treating Lead-Poisoned Condors 2021-07-29
Joe Burnett and Dr.Alex Herman discuss the Oakland Zoo's involvement in the condor recovery program and lead poisoning treatment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPU5X_TXZNk&t=17s

The death of a condor is always very unwelcome news. However, attempting to determine the cause of death can greatly assist the recovery program in identifying and addressing potential mortality threats. Through our tracking and monitoring efforts, we are able to recover deceased condors from the field and submit them for necropsy and analysis in an attempt to determine why they died. Rideout et al.(2012) published a peer-reviewed scientific manuscript examining condor deaths in the wild from 1992-2009. Fifty percent of all known fatalities were due to lead poisoning! Lead poisoning, from ingesting ammunition fragments in carcasses, continues to be the number one threat to condor survival in central California and the recovery program as a whole. For more information about lead poisoning in Condors,

*if you listened well they talked about #431 who supported 4 differents time the treatment against lead during its life and finally deceased after a new light exposure.... :(

One more time this season, a Beauty Mom had flown away... :( :cry1: :brknhrt: :cryhanky:

I'm so sad for you PNP438, Many positive thoughts toward 1077 your little one and toward Junipero who is alone now to rise him.
Keep an eye on them please 🙏 :brknhrt: :cryhanky:

Rip 2021

~24 July - Ca : Condor Loner #311 Redwood Son (aka #665)'s mate and Condor #769, #937, #1029's Mom.

Loner was 18 yrs and 2 Mo.

The other morning i visited https://explore.org/livecams/condors/co ... astle-nest
and the first message i read was the following
From K... l.... c... • 4 hours ago : Remembering #438 & #311 tonight who both tragically passed recently... Fly free in paradise..........

Loner hatched: May 12, 2003 at San Diego Wild Animal Park. She was raised using the condor head puppet technique. She has no problem being in the wild, although she seems rather shy and often sticks to the fringes of social gatherings.
Loner took several years past reaching maturity to pick a mate but eventually paired with #242, and successfully raised a chick (#769).
After the untimely death of her first mate, #242, she paired with #567 and successfully raised #937.
Unfortunately, #567 recently died from lead poisoning, but 311 has been able to find another mate in #665, Redwood Son.
Loner #311 has an injured toe that veterinarians have determined would be too invasive to fix, but it hasn't stopped her from standing her ground! She has a slight limp, but this tough old broad won't let anything stop her from protecting her chicks. [/size]

Rip 2021

29 July at 14h10 - Mladé Buky, Czech Republic : Storklet Bonifacij #885 †Mom Barunka & Dad Bukácek's storklet, Pankrác & Servác's younger sibling.

Bonifacij 16.5.2021 - † 29.7.2021. 74 days old.
He did the hardest of his short life and had only to train his wings before his first migration toward Africa...
Like Barunka his Mom, finally it is an electric line which got the better of his dreams and his hopes :cry1:

Živá kamera - Mladé Buky - capí hnízdo | przeczytaj informacje pod filmem | info below the video - YouTube
Mladé Buky, Czech Republic
You are watching the transmission of the nesting of the White Stork Bukácek, which found himself in an unusual and unique situation of a single father. Unfortunately, on 23 May 2021, the female Barunka died after contact with high voltage wires, so after consultation and arrangement with experts from a rescue centre it was decided that we will regularly feed the storks directly in the nest, so that it is not necessary to remove the chicks from the nest. Initially we put food directly into the nest 3 times a day. Then we gradually switched to leaving food for Bukácek on the chimney by the nest, which was the original intent - to feed Bukácek outside the nest. Bukácek fed the chicks sufficiently even 10 times a day. There was no more need to keep feeding them and we did not want to scare them into falling off the nest. On 28 May 2021 Bukácek threw the weakest and smallest chick of the four out of the nest. On 18-19 July 2021 all three storks, Pankrác, Servác, and finally Bonifác took their first flights. We congratulated each other on victory, but unfortunately what a life it would have been if the a tragedy had not stricken again... On 29 July 2021 at 14:08 Bonifac CE885 landed on the high voltage wires, which was fatal for him as well as for his mother Barunka (she landed on another pole in another location), and died after falling from the height. Helping the widowed stork and his family has cost us a lot of strength. Thank you all for your support. Šándor Havrán and Jirí Zeman

I browsed their Facebook account and I came across this superb poem written by Lori FG who authorized me to share it with you here so you will know the story of the sad season of Bonifacij and his mother Barunka with the hope that all goes well for Bukácek's his dad and his siblings Pankrác & Servác. :ty: Lori FG!

" I had to write my pain away, i wrote this, since english is not my mother language, it took me some minutes...but it came from my heart, this is my tribute to these beautiful birds which do not have an easy life, to Bonifác..Daddy Bukacek and kids Pankrác and Servác with love..

There is a small Village,
Mlade Buky is its name..
cocks singing and dogs barking,
no one can forget.

Up in a nest next to a chimney,
a sudden widow Stork,
is feeding his four chicks,
they are little, hungry and loud.

The fourth one would not make it
Daddy Bukacek is to decide,
surviving has to set up,
nature can just not hide.

They grew strong and lively,
thanks Dad and humans help,
get ready for the journey!
I ve heard Dad Buky tell.

Some day i hear wings fluttering,
they are learning how to fly,
the first..the second flying
the third one took his time.

This little one is funny
and caring you can tell,
he knew he was being watched
and set the camera well !

By feeding he got crazy,
he got the biggest snakes,
stronger as his brothers..
is maybe a strong girl ?????

Oh finally take a look!!
they are flying over there!
People of Village watching,
Storks fans everywhere!

God!....their wings are beautiful!
Marvelous birds flying around,
People watching on streaming,
Mama Barunka would be so proud!!

One day turned white to dark,
was yesterday this horrorfull day,
mama why you crying?
I have heard my child say.

Little chick sat on power line,
his light went forever out,
Oh Lord Dad Buky is calling!!
his crying out is tearing me apart!

Humans are good, humans are evil
some of them really care,
tell us please how can we help you,
to make a posible happy end?

I'll pray for his brothers left,
that they make a beautiful Stork life,
little Bonifac you left us heartbrokened,
and inmensily terrible sad.

Fly high little Bonifac,
fly free to Storks heaven,
mom Barunka waiting foy you,
together with little Benjamin..

Oh Lord protect his brothers,
and Daddy Buky as well,
for the coming big journey,
they facing here on earth.

We Storks fans will be praying
for Daddy and his kids,
thanks for the joy you brought us
you are too a part of us."

We will never forget Bonifac , his life was short, but he brought us so much joy.. thanks for reading
Lori FG "

Today, July 29, 2021, the life of our beautiful young stork Bonifác ended forever. Like his mother, he died on high-voltage wires (it was not the same place). After all that fate had given him, he didn't deserve it. Once again, the life of a beautiful stork was ruined by the fault of man. Is it necessary at all? What is the problem? Can't competent people intervene and speed up the security of high voltage lines? People should think, come together and do something about it. Bonifac, you will be in our hearts and memories forever. ❤️
The rescuers of the young stork Šándor Havrán and Jiří Zeman provided 560 thousand crowns from a transparent account in favor of the rescue station for wild animals and injured storks JARO Jaroměř and the Bird Park Josefovské louky. Each of these organizations sent 280 thousand crowns.

Rip 2021

July 31- from Polgár, Hungary. Red-footed falconets Nest#2 Prff#2.

LIVE Nest Cam - Red-footed falcons (Polgár, Hungary) https://madarles.hu/en/red-footed-falcon2
https://madarles.hu/en

In this nest there were 4 eggs. only two were fertilised. 07-23 Unfortunately, the half-hatched chick Prff#1 died. The second one hatched 07-24.
7 days after as it was becoming a beautiful, well fed and strong falconets, an owl took advantage of the night to put an end to this young life. And yet Mom was also in the nest but in the dark could not defend her little one...
Rest in peace little angel, you are not alone to cross the rainbow bridge this season, you must have noticed it when you arrived in this sweet and wonderful new world. I'm sio sad for Mom who had some difficulties to feed you during your first hours but she was doing great afterwards.

It was 23h37 when the owl entered in the nest where Mom was covering her little one. She placed herself in defense ode but also at this moment let the falconet without defence... In a full dark night, the owl didn't need a so great gift from Mom. Less than 5 seconds later the little angel had flown away to met his elder... :cry1:
At 23h46 everybody is out of the nest, the dead body in the owl's talons and Mom at the owl's tail.
Around 4h00 after the owl was back to check if it missed something or not. Early in the morning, Mom came in also and laid down a little while near her chicks's spirit... :cry1:

All three just left.

What can i say ? Both of them, were suprised in a dark night. I know this is not a reason but it helps me to think that may be attenuated the pain. but that time i heard him suffering, not long but it was not painless :cry1:

One more time this season, a wondeful Angel had flown... and so young like so many before they didn't deserve that 🙏 :( :cry1: :brknhrt: :cryhanky:

Cause of dead from our Merikotkas Eaglets EE1 And EE2
Autopsy confirmed that the cause of death for chicks was avian influenza H5N1 ("bird flu")

"original article:
https://www.kotkas.ee/uudised/laeaene...
Press release of the Estonian University of Life Sciences (19.05.2021)

... An autopsy performed at the Estonian University of Life Sciences revealed that the eagle chicks died as a result of the H5N1 bird flu.

According to veterinarian Madis Leivits, who determined the cause of death, the eagle chicks were infected with an aggressive strain of bird flu that has not been encountered in Estonia before. H5N1 is a highly contagious and dangerous strain of bird flu that is known to infect mammals, including humans.

Man's desire to experience nature as closely as possible is natural. For a long time now, one such option has been real-time nest cameras, which can be used to experience the joys and sorrows of families with birds without interruption. According to scientists, nature cameras actually have a much broader function, helping us to understand the life and needs of animals in nature, through which we can better co-exist in a common living environment.

The white tailed eagles nest camera located in Matsalu National Park and installed by MTÜ Kotkaklubi is extremely popular both in Estonia and abroad. All the joyous events took place on April 28 and 30, when the eagle chicks hatched. The newborns were cared for by adult birds, offering them a variety of food (fish, game carcasses and waterfowl).

Last week, however, the nest was hit by an accident: the chicks suddenly became powerless and died on consecutive days at the age of about two weeks. The case raised many questions among nest camera watchers and bird researchers, so it was decided to investigate the cause of the chicks' deaths further. MTÜ Kotkaklubi, Estonian University of Life Sciences and the Environmental Board coordinated the collection of dead chicks and remains from the nest and the transport to Tartu by the Institute of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry of the EEC.

According to veterinarian Leivits, at the initial examination, the older son (EE1) had a rather large lump between his beak and throat (parts ingested with undigested food are usually vomited out). The pellet, which consisted mainly of hay, was also in the throat of the smaller eagle chick (EE2). Whether this is normal, we do not yet know, Leivits said.

The necropsy found that most of the tissues in the bodies of the dead were altered. The organs were fluffy and abnormally colored. Bruises from various tissues could also be found, and the lungs were filled with mucous-foaming foam.

Primary samples tested positive for family A influenza virus. To confirm and type the finding, a sample of the lungs was sent to the Veterinary and Food Laboratory, where the H5N1 avian influenza virus was confirmed.

The disease probably reached the nest with waterfowl, which were used as food by the eagles. Waterfowl are also a natural reservoir for influenza, Leivits noted, confirming that this is a natural process in nature and that diseases are also part of nature. "This strain of influenza has not been encountered in Estonia before, which does not mean that it has not occurred in our nature before," said Leivits.

He hoped that the adult birds, which ate the same food as the eagle chicks, would be able to recover from the disease and be able to weave their nests again next year and raise their young.

Avian influenza H5N1 is also important from a human health perspective. Namely, the virus has the ability to spread and adapt quickly, overcoming barriers between species, including humans and other mammals. "This finding reminds us of caution and the fact that incompetent intervention can endanger our own health."

The spread of diseases plays an important role in humans through their activities in the environment, directly by transporting viruses or by changing the living environment, as a result of which pathogens spread more successfully or the resistance of animals is inhibited."

:luck: Regarding the state of health of the parents, Eve & Eerik, we will not have the answer until the next season if both return to their nest as they abandoned the nest after the dead chicks were taken away and never returned. :luck:

Newman and Zooey's petite beautiful Chance.
Her early life was particularly difficult as her mother Zooey is a young first time mother. Zooey, despite the many prey brought by Newman had difficulty feeding Chance. Then day by day everything improved even if Zooey was a little too protective of Chance. Finally Chance became a perfect juvenile and always ready to accept or take food from her parents' heels. A perfect first fledge and two weeks of free flights and then no news from Chance, Where are you, what happened to you petite Chance ? some questions without an answer... :dunno:
08-17, Newman your father is still in the area, Zooey your Mom was not seen after the 08-15.

One more time this season, a wondeful Angel had flown... and so young like so many before you, you didn't deserve that 🙏 :( :cry1: :brknhrt: :cryhanky:

2021 August 18

By dint of enduring and sharing these pains, these sorrows, this sadness and all these tears with all our little feathered friends, young or old, for that matter, maybe one day I will have to withdraw completely for an indefinite period because that season has been particularly terrible despite some wonderful and happy successes.

It is possible that I scatter a little too much in the different nests or there is a real hecatomb this year in terms of the survival of the chicks. Considering what I read in the various forums, I think more for the hecatomb.

RIP 2021

August ~19- from Cove Point Park in LusbyCalvert County, Md. Osprets
CCP#1 and CCP#2
.

Assassinated by order of the high authorities
The sole reason, their nest was placed in the wrong place at the wrong time. Poor of us that all these incompetents are in positions of high responsibility. Responsible but not guilty they say .... If they were as responsible as they say they would prove it, all of them, by resigning from their positions, but it is not tomorrow the day before they do it.
And when I read that a wildlife protection official says that it happens every day in nature and that nobody cares about it, yes but in this case it is not premeditated killings. .. How in this post can one tell such nonsense?
And what about the veterinarian who euthanized these two beautiful and healthy angels who only asked to live? I have no words ... He and the others will have to explain it when the time comes and the sentence will be well deserved.

All guilty!

Two young ospreys were removed from their nest and euthanized so workers could replace a light in a Southern Maryland park

That was infuriating! Thank you Philjo....yes people care. They could have been removed and put back. Or elsewhere in another nest.

Rip 2021

August 23 - from Jõgeva County in Estonia : Black Storklet Malbe aka Sedate.

Must-toonekurg2::Ciconia nigra
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euyp7iEHJBA

The morning after its fledge, around 10h45, Malbe 70 days old, Benjamin's sibling, was defending it's life against a predator on the ground. Malbe lost the battle.

Malbe was one of the three storklet who surrounded Benjamin with their tenderness during his final departure viewtopic.php?p=485815#p485815

Last pics of Malbe the afternoon she fledged 08-22. The right black storklet. Malbe never returned to its nest.

From Urmas: 7182 was killed by predator a bit more as 100m of nest.. about 10:45 in 23th may be really the fatal turning point for that chick
Our storklet 7182(Malbe) was found dead by Urmas yesterday afternoon. He collected remnants and the transmitter. He promised to tell more later.

Probably it happened when a kind of attack was heard some days ago. Liznm Captured this video, only sounds of what was happening. A brave Storklet was defending its life against a predator. 3 days ago we knew that is was Malbe who also lost its life...

Bad and sad news for Malbe but this is how nature works ... Malbe will have suffered a few minutes (5 to 6) and at least will not have had to undergo 35 hours of agony as Benjamin had to endure. I'm sure he was there, maybe with Janika its Mom to greet him.

RIP Malbe. I hope you didn't suffer too much. Now you are a free soaring black Storklet with a full crop forever. 😢🙏
