About the rescaped Black Storklets,
Normally tonight 06-28 to 06-29 one of the 3 black storklets rescued from Jan and Janika's nest will be placed in Kaia and Karl II's nest with their 3 black storks.

Back to the Nature

Shortly:

"If all goes well, then on Tuesday night, rather at night, I would try to take a black storklet to a nest equipped with a webcam. Then we can see what's going on there. There is still a small risk, because if something goes wrong, the whole world can see, but all this needs to be explained, ”says Urmas Sellis, the coordinator of the Estonian Eagle Club.
In the spring, nature lovers rejoiced that as many as six chicks crawled out of the eggs in the nest of the black storks Jaanika and Jan, which are constantly monitored. Unfortunately, the male bird disappeared in the first days of June and the female bird could no longer feed the chicks alone. So the members of the Eagle Club decided to bring three surviving chicks to the animal clinic of the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

"As a rule, adult birds do not sleep at the nest," explains Sellis why the chicks are taken to the nest at night. "They are sleeping somewhere near the feeding place so they can start looking for food early in the morning. The other thing is that if you put the chick in the nest in the evening, the other storklets will calm down in the morning and they won't have any problems with each other. "
"The riskiest part is the first meeting of the parents with the stepson, we don't know how they will react," Sellis describes the biggest fear. "We imagine and hope, and they probably won't even notice that maybe there are four instead of three storklets, but you know. We can't put ourselves in their heads. "

What to do now?

The clinic made sure that the little chicks did not come into contact with anyone. A doll imitating a female bird was placed next to the incubator, and the hand of the feeder was also disguised. Although the chicks recovered, there were concerns about how to proceed with them. Practically the only option was to distribute the chicks to other nests, because no one in the incubator can distribute the wisdom to the chicks. In addition, bird researchers have found that young birds that grow up in a real nest develop slightly faster than human birds.

Under the eyes of the whole world

Bird nesting cameras are not only popular in Estonia, they are monitored all over the world. "Our main communication is in English, and we don't know what is spoken in other languages," says Sellis. Therefore, he plans to enlighten the whole event in advance and to write honestly why and how it is done in the forum of bird lovers.

Birds receive food aid

If the members of the Eagle Club usually visit the black stork's nest somewhere in the summer, when the storklets are already older and there is no fear that the old birds will abandon the nest, then this year the observations had to be made earlier.

"The initial plan was that if there are fewer storklets in a nest, such as two, you would prefer to put it there," says Sellis. "All the nests we have inspected have three storklets. We also need to pay attention to the nutritional opportunities around us. We have the opportunity to provide extra food in two nests in Karula. If we see from the cameras that it is too rare to go to the nest with food, we will add fish and other things to the prepared places. That way we can alleviate the possible food shortage a bit. ”

Our oldest female, Traveler (171), born on 05/26/1997, was captured at the Pinnacles National Park pen on Friday, 06/24, after showing signs of lead poisoning. She is currently receiving emergency treatment at Oakland Zoo and is battling for her life.
Lead poisoning from ingestion of spent lead ammunition in animal carcasses is the leading mortality threat to free-flying condors and very difficult to treat once condors like Traveler are severely poisoned. If she can pull through this, Traveler will likely have a very long road to recovery.
A very special thanks to our partners at Oakland Zoo and Pinnacles National Park for responding so quickly to help Traveler.
Our Free Non-Lead Ammunition Program helps to mitigate the threat lead poisoning to the California Condor. Learn how you can help.

Update,
Contrary to usual, Kaia the mother spent the night in the nest. To avoid scaring her, the young black stork's transfert has been postponed until next night or a later night.

The same night 06-28 to 29 :( :cry1:
At night I brought back the chick to the outdoor nest in vet clinic. That is actually the same nest you watched, we moved it in whole from indoor isolator box outside. So the chicks knew the nest nearly 20 days already. If placed back the chick which travelled, I added some fish to the nest. As it was in darkness, they did not see the fish, but probably noticed the food in morning. It is speculation, but there had to be some accident in early morning. Maybe they started to fight for fish and smallest appeared in wrong position. It is only about 1m from ground, but for quite fat juvenile it could be too high, if to fall to the side, with opened wing... Nobody could enter there simply so to disturb the chicks, so it is not easily understandable accident, with that serious injury.
Today there will be another attempt to add fourth chick in natural nest. :cry1:

BS#3 was the little one o the left...
