Irish eyes I love this stellar eagle !

So happy for Melbourne eyases and port Lincoln osplets - what a great season for both !

At Orange Di is doing much better and can hunt too now. Xavier has been awesome in providing food even with very bad weather.
He definitively deserves his name which means saviour!

In the meantime yurruga is growing leaps and bounds and is now self-feeding

Oh what a day - 3 Osprey banded and one tracker attached.
The first chick has been named 'Ervie' - I'm still trying to figure out how to pronounce it, but he is named after a village in Scotland where our Minister for Environment grew up, as without his passion and assistance none of this would have been possible so we are eternally grateful. Ervie weighed 1,380 gms and has a dark green band,
the next is 'Falky' named after Ian Falkenberg, the man responsible for the banding and attaching the trackers on these Osprey. Falky has a yellow band which is on the opposite leg to Star who also sports a different yellow band and weighed 1,330 gms.
The 3rd Osprey is 'Bazza', named after Barry Hockaday, Take 2 photography's husband, who does a lot of the leg work for us plus some of the photography. He weighed in at 1,280 gms and has a red band. Photos by Take 2 photography

More info from USFWS on Condor #247. His most recent territory is in Lockwood Canyon, which is only a few miles (as the condor flies) away from Huttons Bowl! The interactions we've seen do appear to be territorial, but hopefully they won't deter #1075 from successfully fledging.
On Tuesday, territorial interactions between the Hutton’s Bowl condors and #247, a male from a nearby canyon, resulted in the chick disappearing from the view of any of the cameras. As of the morning of Oct. 13, we have not seen the chick back in the nest cavity.

On Wednesday, USFWS and Santa Barbara Zoo biologists located condor chick #1075 in the canyon below the Huttons Bowl nesting cave. They retrieved the chick and transferred it to the care of veterinarians and keepers at the Los Angeles Zoo.
Staff there are still evaluating the extent of any possible injuries and the chick is receiving treatment. Given the events, the Huttons Bowl Condor Cam will be offline for the rest of the season.
It’s a bittersweet ending, but we’re thankful for the field team’s quick action and to our cam partners and volunteers for helping us share the lives of the magnificent California Condor with the world. We will provide updates on #1075’s status as we get more information.

Recap and Update

https://www.facebook.com/TheCondorCave/ ... 7566719125
... California condor chick #1075 hatched on April 10. Its parents are female condor #594 and male condor #374. This was the pair’s first nesting attempt together.
Unfortunately, condor #374 was recovered earlier this year after his GPS unit stopped transmitting locations and biologists picked up mortality signals from his radio transmitter.
The cause of death for #374 is still pending.
Condor #594 was seen visiting the nest a couple of times over the days following the evacuation and appears healthy and unharmed on camera. ...

(Part 2): The non-parental male, condor 247, was first seen harassing the chick above the nest cavity on October 11. Condor 594, the remaining female parent of chick 1075, attempted to protect the chick and their nest from condor 247.

(Part 3): However, on the evening of October 12, condor 247 pulled chick 1075 out of its nest and out of view from the nest cameras.

(Part 4): Biologists were able to locate and transport the chick to the Los Angeles Zoo to receive expert evaluation and care from their veterinarian staff and keepers.

(Part 5): Part 5): The Huttons Bowl chick is currently undergoing treatment and is being assessed for further improvement before making any definitive prognoses. As chick 1075 has been evacuated, the condor cams will remain turned off for the remaining of the season.

Finally the 4th falconet will fly well but not in our dimension. He will join his previous sibligngs from 2 or 3 years ago who were overcome by the disease.

Thanks to Liznm for her video
367 Collins Falcons~So sad! Little is begging for food but it is not eating~8:16 PM 2021/11/11
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8JfvNd8tao

"I had been wondering all day why the youngest screamed a lot and didn't eat, not even if the food is available for him. I know the behavior of birds that have been fed on my balcony. sometimes they sat in front of the food and did not move. After a few days they died. There is no help with trichomonads. They can no longer eat because their throat is full of trichomonads. Not a gram of food goes in. The birds starve to death in front of "full plates"

Info by Victor Hurley:
As people will have noticed the remaining nestling (a male) is struggling. I don't know exactly what is going on. From my experience it is most likely a heavy *Trichomoniasis *infection. This is not uncommon in urban and industrial settings where introduced prey species make up a higher proportion of the diet. It is now too late to intervene and approach the ledge as this is guaranteed to lead to this nestling jumping off of the ledge to a certain gravity induced fate. In fact the disease has probaly already progressed too far. To approach it once it is too weak and malnourished to make that jump will also be too late to actually prevent it succumbing to this disease. I have consulted with people whose experience with this species and disease I respect and they have reconfirmed the merits of this approach which has been adopted at 367 Collins Street for some years now. As it becomes increasingly obvious that the disease is progressing I will be recommending Mirvac to then switch off the live feed. Little will be gained by watching its last hours or days.
It is worthwhile recalling that there is almost by necessity a relatively high mortality within top order predators in their first one to two years of life. One consequence of this is that the environment does not become over-populated/crowded by predators which will be constantly attacking each other and may also then locally wipe out one or more prey species. With this in mind it is worth recalling that approximately 66% of juvenile Peregrine Falcons die in their first or second year. In Victoria 13% of the mortalities recorded of juvenile Peregrine Falcons are due to *Trichomoniasis *infection. This is based from 146 known mortalities...."

In north of Melbourne, we had an update of the rescued WBSE. Looks like my feelings were right… from the beginning I saw the pics I thought sea eagles were wrong… that it was se28 in rehab and not SE27.
They gendered the juvie and found out it’s a male. To me se28 was a male on nest (sibling rivalry, whole behaviour).

Though sea eagles still say it’s se27 my thoughts are that it is se28. It’s still very sad and concerning that the other sibling is MIA :brknhrt: we know what it means on this nest !
