Liberty, Audubon’s Bald Eagle has passed

Liberty, Audubon Community Nature Center’s non-releasable Bald Eagle, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 after a series of recent health setbacks. Liberty arrived at Audubon in 2002 from the state of Washington, where a local woman discovered her with an injured wing. Liberty spent a year in rehabilitation at the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center, but they deemed her non-releasable due to the nature of her injury. She was at least 25 years old, but quite possibly older. In the wild, Bald Eagles live for 20 – 30 years, though they can live longer in captivity.

Liberty’s presence touched thousands of children, families, and adults over her two decades at the Nature Center. She brought a sense of wonder and awe to all those who came to admire her. She will be dearly missed by all.

Thom Armella, Liberty’s primary care taker, spent more than 7,000 hours of volunteer service carefully ensuring her well-being. A debt of gratitude is owed to Thom and to Dr. Bill Seleen who served as Liberty’s original veterinarian and who has provided his guidance as her health deteriorated.

So many sad news Philjo !
About sea eagles, not very good news. while se30 was taking into vet care "severely thin", there's still good hope he can recover.
se29 injury is worse than we expected, he has external fixations to help saving his leg :( . Surgeons are happy about the result so far now we hope things are getting better. But there's still risks of infection or other issues.
This pair has been such a joy to watch on nest, and from the moment they fledged things got worse. I must say that many more followers were watching them, and for ex,l ocals kept watching for the eaglets after they left the nest, helping to catch se30 before it was too late. That wasn't the case the years before. They probably saved the little one life.
I wish they would put both together (they are in different facilities)

In Orange, things are doing great ! even with inclement weather, food is coming and the eyas are growing up nicely :) a pure joy to watch after two difficult years !

The Black Storklet called Madi was found dead in Turkey. RIP brave little one :cry1:
https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 14#p881514
Long e-maiil from Urmas, who was not able to contact us yesterday, about Madi. Sad to report that Madi is dead. I will copy Urmas's e-mail here.

" Good Morning.
I was yesterday in Tallinn, so arrived only late night and look this morning data. There is not clearly visible in data that Madi has perished. Too few data come from that leg mount transmitter.
Yes, I see now message form Matsalu Ringing Centre to Eagle Club sent yesterday. They inform about sad news in Matsalu FB that Madi has been found dead in Turkey. Four photos of dead body on road side.
I don't know more at the moment, but will try to get contact with finder (Ishak Kocagöz). It is important to know, if that was traffic incident or something else. There is also written in message that rings and transmitter have been brought in centre of local national park in Kütahya.
From the pictures there is no background information visible, when photos made. In transmitter data I can't see such place, but there are caps. Yesterday morning transmitter was most probably in car and driving with speed 127km/h along a highway. It could be similar situation in evening 27th, when location in village Altintas. As transmitter is on leg, it does not give clear information about position of the bird. Next data could be soon.
FB users may know more... Raivo and Madli are living in Pärnu, so probably communicate quite often.
Kind regards,
Urmas

Information about Madissaare, from Urmas.

" Madissaare is juvenile stork in western Estonian nest, not fed additionally in regular basis, like in Karula. It was in quite bad body condition both in ringing time and also in tagging time. But still alive, though one of three chicks there was dead in nest during tagging of Madissaare. Last night Madis, the vet went there with fish. Both juveniles were in nest and Madis threw the fish (more as 100) into nest one at time, most of them several times before hitting the nest bottom... that all in night time. The name Madissaare is not connected anyhow to Madis the vet. We will see, if that juvenile will migrate, and if that leg mount transmitter will produce enough data when it perishes. Body condition was so low, that there was no option to install backpack transmitter. Second juvenile in nest flew already well at time of tagging with transmitter.

That report is not full of optimism, but we can always wish this black stork a better life.
We must applaud vet Madis for his efforts in throwing more than 100 fish up to the nest!. "

Madi flew around 3060 km before she perished in Turkey (10-27-2022) RIP beautiful bird.

Tragedy at Port Lincoln Osprey Nest, Aus.
After begging for food for almost two days. This was reserved for his eldest. After having suffered from the cold and the ambient humidity, even the maternal warmth this night will have been useless. PLO#2 joined his little sibling "Little Bob" this afternoon at 3:31 p.m. when he definitely closed his eyes and relaxed his whole body. Yet these last hours everything announced this tragic end. Do you think anyone was alarmed? No way. the only madness authorized by the authorities was 2 hours later to recover the small lifeless body and to leave some fish for the survivor at the risk that the parents do not return to the nest... Which is often announced for the non intervention. If the law is bad, it is necessary to change the people who enact them or who do not react quickly enough. I am ashamed as a human being to witness so many saving inactions.

And when I read this, I feel even more ashamed
Protecting ... ...’s Ospreys
Friends of Osprey is a S.... A....... conservation group focused on protecting and growing the population of Osprey in S.... A.....
If you would like to help save our endangered Osprey .... sent money...

Sorry not mine, and also i and I'm unsubscribing right away since almost every year it's the same thing...
Poor little PLO3 and PLO2, I ask your forgiveness on behalf of this humanity and I pray that you, all these animals, this nature and all of our planet that we allow to wither, forgive us in return. We'll have so much to report on the other side, it won't be a cakewalk I promise.

Did anyone see the largest pumpkin carved into an EAGLLE?
I don't have a link, but you can search and see photographs--from media outlets.
