Re: The Wildlife Corner
07h43 One of the adult came back. i saw some little light wings moves from both but the adult never brood them
Some says that there was not enought food in the area and that can explain the decision taken by Milda, to let her eaglets alone until their own end... 11h40 Empty nest as if nothing happened here during the season... 2 angels one more time flew away

Yes maybe Milda took the decision to sacrifice them... this is very sad what a tough season for them.

Re: The Wildlife Corner
It looks like Legacy left her nest area and her parents two days after her fledge. Gretchen and Glen from AEF looked after her yesterday and didn’t spot her. Her parents have been waiting for her on the nest tree, bringing food to entice her.
I’m so not ready to let her go and worry a lot. She’s 81 days old only...
If you left baby. I hope you found some other juvies to play and learn with. I only hope nothing bad happened to you.
Samson had an encounter with an hawk yesterday.
Another sad news. Californian condor Iniko won’t have a brother or sister this year. The egg fails to hatch and parents leave it more and more. Flies were seen on it.

Ventana Wildlife Society:
"Unfortunately it appears that Phoenix and Redwood Queen's egg is not viable this year. It is not unusual for a new pair to fail when nesting together the first time. In terms of experience, Phoenix has only successfully reared one chick in the wild, whereas Redwood Queen has reared multiple chicks. We are probably too late in the nesting season for these two to recycle and lay another egg. However, we can surely look forward to another attempt next year.
In terms of inspecting the failed egg or possibly swapping it out. The Dolan fire seriously compromised the base of the Redwood tree and the status of the climbing anchor is very questionable, it's definitely not safe for us to climb, the risks far outweigh the benefit at this stage. We are optimistic that the redwood tree will add new growth and refortify itself over the next few years. Condors and redwoods are similarly resilient!
Thank you all for tuning in and following this nest so closely! We still have 8 nests going strong in central California- 3 with chicks, 5 still incubating eggs. The chicks are #1077, #1078, and #1089. We will assign names to the chicks later in the nest season, so stay tuned!
The wildflowers are really cranking on the Sanctuary cam right now, so enjoy the purple lupines and California poppies in their full splendor.
If you missed last night's Condor Zoom Chat, you can watch here:

Mom: Redwood Queen #190, hatched in LA Zoo in 1998, 22y.o.
Dad: Phoenix #477, hatched in Big Sur in 2008, 13y.o.
Redwood Queen lost her mate of 14 years, Kingpin #167, in the Dolan Fire of 2020. She paired with Phoenix #477 and laid an egg around 2/26/2021. The egg is expected to hatch on or around 4/24/2021.
The pair nests in a natural Redwood tree cavity. "The inside of the nest cavity is approximately 4-5 feet wide. The cavity entrance is south-facing and about 60 feet above ground less than a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Judging by the size of this one, it could be over 500 years old!"

Legacy is home!
I never doubted for a minute that Legacy wasn't safe
Our wonderful mod and Cam Op lisaSAEF just related this enlightening story: "Hi Everyone. BabyhawkAEF let me know Legacy was back at the nest YAY! It could be possible she was loitering at the nest down the road. The neighbors called me this AM that there was a juvie behind their house in a tree. I was called at 10:45 and was there in 15 minutes. The juvie moved from tree to tree closer to the nest. The adults left it alone. Once it was in the tree closer to the nest they chased it off and it was probably around 11:20. I drove around but when it crossed the water I could not see it any longer. Due to the timing it could have been Legacy. They will keep and eye out now. They say there was one there yesterday but thought it was their eagles. They called me today because the whole family was home and realized there were 3 babies."
sharipf_AEF#8439 Today at 2:53 PM
Just to reassure everyone - Legacy has done a couple of crop drops since her return late morning. This is evidence that she either found some food or was fed by the parents while off the nest. She is likely very hungry but she is not starving! :FishEmoji: :FishEmoji: :FishEmoji:
