We have a twist! Two geese - presumably the same pair that HM has been trying to evict! - laid an egg in N1 on Saturday night. We don't know whether we'll get another goose couple in N2B and we'll see if HM keeps paying attention to N1, especially since she is most likely incubating her own eggs at this point.

And while I was posting about egg #1, she laid egg #2!

Note that if you check the nest right now, the geese might not be on it and you might not see the egg! Geese are very good at concealing their eggs and she isn't in full incubation yet. Live link:

Goodnight/ morning Big Bear, ...!

03-15-2024

Egg#1: 50 do @ 16h55. (01-25-2024). + 15 days @16h55. :cry1: :brknhrt:
Egg#2: 47 do @ 13h59. (01-28-2024). + 12 days @13h59. :cry1: :brknhrt:
Egg#3: 44 do @ 17h58. (01-31-2024). + 09 days @17h58. :cry1: :brknhrt:

I'm so sad now after these almost 50 days of waiting... like all at Big Bear i presume. :( :cry1: :cryhanky: :brknhrt: and above all for Jackie and Shadow who were once again so patient and who could never have incubated better

A second clutch ? i think it depends the time they will stay covering these 3 so special and beautiful eggs... :luck:

As you can see it is too late now to expect a hatching of one of these three eggs and like it was not enougth to be supported by Jackie and Shadow , tonight the weather changed one more time
Wind and snow in the area... so :( for both of them

A hunter killed an extremely rare bird of prey from the Eagles of Lake Geneva

Eagles of Lake Geneva

At the end of February, a resident of the Aigles du Léman was shot dead in the L'Oisans region, in Isère. It was an extremely rare and strictly protected raptor, a white-tailed eagle. This week, the poacher who killed him was arrested and questioned. He admitted the facts.

The sad discovery was made on February 24 in the town of La Salette-Fallavaux, some 1,700 meters away. The remains of a bullet-hit eagle were then discovered.

The remains of the raptor were discovered in the Oisans massif, at an altitude of 1700 meters

The bird had a GPS transmittertag. It was a young one-year-old sea eagle who was part of a reintroduction program. Named Morzine, she was born in captivity at Aigles du Léman, the park in Sciez (Haute-Savoie), in neighboring France, dedicated to the protection and conservation of birds of prey. She was released at the beginning of September.

Feathers as a trophy

An investigation was then carried out by the French Biodiversity Office, assisted by the Monestier-de-Clermont gendarmerie. Two hunters aged 35 and 30, from the same family, were quickly identified. They were taken into custody on Wednesday, reports https://france3-regions.francetvinfo.fr ... 38791.html

On February 24, these two men allegedly illegally killed two deers. Then they saw the raptor with a wingspan of more than two meters. One of them opened fire, hitting and killing the majestic bird. He took a few feathers from the corpse before continuing on his way. They were found in his home during a search. He admitted the facts during interrogation.

Charged with “destruction, possession and transport of protected species”, this man risks up to three years in prison and a fine of 150,000 euros. His partner is being prosecuted for complicity.

Although she was born in captivity, Morzine had acclimated to freedom and lived near a river, not far from Grenoble. “Until she met two idiots who decided that her journey was going to end there,” complains on France 3 Jacques-Olivier Travers, founder of the Eagles of Léman. For him, it is an “unbearable gratuitous act”.

Fourteen birds from the Lake Geneva Park have been released since 2022. Morzine is the third to be slaughtered.

*The remains of an eagle, mutilated to "make a trophy", had already been discovered in Germany last April. This second slaughter therefore increases anger among those working for its reintroduction. “When you kill an eagle, you are not just killing an animal, you are killing all the hope of the people who participated in its reintroduction. If we let it happen, there is no point in fighting,” insists the falconer.
(This one was called Sciez and was also a Pascale’s goddaughter) He had been mutilated on the spot (dead or alive for that matter) and found himself without his head and legs.

This video is dedicated to Harriet and M15 whose love endured through many years and through many joys and sorrows. It was M15's resilience & hope for the future that kept him going without Harriet, raising E21& E22 by himself as his tribute & last gift to Harriet. Now a new season is coming to a close and we see E23, the only eaglet hatched to M15 & his new mate F23, healthy, strong & courageous, spending precious time with Dad on the U branch.

Harriet & M15 would perch for long periods of time together, and sometimes overnight on the U branch. It was their special place 💖. To see E23 now honoring M15 and in a symbolic way, taking Harriet 's place perching next to Dad. Parent and offspring, making new memories...and for M15, perhaps holding old memories near and dear. The future is bright for E23 who has been excelling in so many ways as he/she gets ready to meet their destiny. The music I selected was Circle of Life by Elton John to depict this story of love, loss and triumph for M15. Harriet is gone but never forgotten. Thank you for watching!

"From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
There's more to see than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done

Some say, "Eat or be eaten."
Some say, "Live and let live."
But all are agreed
As they join the stampede
You should never take more than you give

In the circle of life
It's the wheel of fortune
It's the leap of faith
It's the band of hope
'Til we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle, the circle of life

Some of us fall by the wayside
And some of us soar to the stars
And some of us sail through our troubles
And some have to live with the scars

There's far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round

In the circle of life
It's the wheel of fortune
It's the leap of faith
It's the band of hope
'Til we find our place
On the path unwinding, yeah
In the circle, the circle of life

It's the wheel of fortune, yeah
It's the leap of faith
It's the band of hope
'Til we find our place
On the path unwinding, yeah
In the circle, the circle of life
On the path unwinding, yeah
In the circle, the circle of life"
