Worries about Solly, Last year ospret equipped with a GPS tracker

Recall from last year

2020 – Three eggs were laid. 11th, 14th & 17th August 2020. All three eggs hatched. 20th, 21st & 24th September 2020.
They have been given Unisex names as we don’t know their gender as yet.
The first born was named Solly after Fran Solly from Take 2 Photography who supplies most of the great still photos you see on the Port Lincoln Osprey Facebook page.
The second born was named Dew, after the Department of Environment & Water as without their help we would never have received permission to band/ring last season’s chicks and also satellite track 2 chicks from 2020.
The last born, 3 days after the second Osprey, we have called Taps, named after Graham Tapley. Without his help we wouldn’t have the camera on the nest at Thistle Island – and also because he has a twin sister – but he was born three days after her. Unfortunately Taps died at 18 days old. There were 7 fish brought to the nest the previous day but the two elder chicks didn’t allow him to feed well.
2020.11.06 - Solly and Dew were both banded today. Solly has had a Satellite Tracker placed on her so we will be able to monitor where she goes to for up to 4 years.
2020.11.24 - Solly took her first flight today. She made increasingly longer flights from the barge around the small bay before looking further around Port Lincoln.
2020.12.03 - Dew took his first flight today and has not been sighted since he left the area. We are still hopeful somebody will report seeing an Osprey with a Maroon leg band as he was in good condition when he left the barge.
2021.02.21 - Solly left the Port Lincoln area and headed south along Proper Bay, past Coffin Bay and headed inland to Lock before heading back to the coast to Port Kenny. She then headed off to Streaky Bay where she spent several weeks, making her home in a tree in the Streaky Bay Hospital, much to the delight of the locals. She then headed to Eba Anchorage and apart from a few short trips further west but mainly back to Streaky Bay, she has remained at Eba Anchorage.
2021.09.12 - Solly is still happily fishing at Eba Anchorage.

Solly is home!! Maurine Lee has just reported Solly is perched in her favourite tree at Eba Anchorage. Will be interesting to see what the tracker shows at 11:30pm. Community support is so important in helping monitoring and spreading the word about Osprey. Thank you 🙏 so much Maurine.

Hi everyone,
Good news, Junipero (663) was picked up by radio signal yesterday toward his nest site. However, he has not been observed on the cam recently, so we have no new information on the condition of his injured leg. We are encouraged he's still moving around and that could also indicate he's finding wild sources of food for his chick, #1077.
Keep your eyes on the cam, he could show up at any time!

Do you remember Iniko the young condor, Redwood Queen and †Kingpin's chicklet ?
During Dolan's fire, his nest in the trunk of a tree was surrounded by flames. He got away with it, like his mother, but his father was never seen again following this tragedy. A few days later, a male condor ejected it from its nest. He was injured and was driven to the LA Zoo. His captivity finally ends ...

The results are in! Thank you to everyone who voted. The all female pre-release cohort in San Simeon, CA, will be named after five influential females in conservation. Watch their journey to San Simeon here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z62KTXamEE8

-Rachel Carson
-Rosalie Edge
-Dian Fossey
-Jane Goodall
-Jan Hamber

Stay tuned for the live-stream releases of Rachel, Rosalie, Dian, Jane and Jan scheduled for Nov. 2nd and Dec. 4th. Details to follow.

*Names to be assigned to individual condors by the VWS interns in the coming weeks. The interns will observe the condors and assign names based on their unique personalities.

Pre-release Condors
We currently have 9 pre-release condors residing in our San Simeon release pen that are visible on the live-streaming cam. In a couple weeks, Iniko will be arriving and the group will grow to 10!
Four condors will not be released in San Simeon and are slotted for release in Northern CA in summer 2022. They will be with us until spring 2022. They are (studbook #s): 969 (F), 973 (M), 1010 (F), and 1045 (F). *The last two numbers are listed on their wing I.D. tags.
There are 6 condors scheduled for release in San Simeon this year. They include Iniko (1031) and 5 other females (Studbook #s): 1011, 1019, 1036, 1038, & 1042. These 5 females arrived in early September and have been acclimating quite well for a few weeks now. We attached radio and GPS transmitters last week and they can be identified by orange wing I.D tags listing their last two numbers (i.e. 11, 19, 36). Iniko will receive a radio and GPS transmitter and orange wing ID tags upon her arrival. She will be transferred from LA Zoo to San Simeon in a couple weeks and will need at least 4-6 weeks of acclimation time before her release. As a result, we plan to break this group up in to two release batches of 3 birds each, with Iniko in the latter group. Both releases (Nov. 2nd and Dec. 4th) will be live-streamed with more details to be revealed at our next zoom chat on October 28th, 2021 @4pm PT, sign up at www.ventanaws.org

Junipero- please keep posting images and comments if you observe him on the cam.Thank you!

Black Stork Nest 2, Jan and Janika, 2021
The Black Stork nest 2 is situated in Jõgeva County in Estonia.
https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 52#p827852

The Black Storks couple had 4 newborns this year. Only one was able to migrate, Julge. Equipped with a gps transmitter, it has remained silent since September 25 while Julge was in France on his route to Africa. All the watchers in France, Spain and Portugal are on the lookout in case we face a transmitter failure. :luck:

†- Benjamin (the youngest/fourth chick) on July 12 perished 25 day old. † viewtopic.php?p=485815#p485815

†- Tasane/peaceful (No3 - 7183) fledged on Aug 24 at 13:57:28 and on Aug 26 was killed by a raccoon dog about 30 metres from the nest. † viewtopic.php?p=497723#p497723

†- Malbe/sedate (No2 - 7182) fledged on Aug 22 at 17:35:35 and on Aug 23 was killed by predator a bit more as 100m of nest. † viewtopic.php?p=497400#p497400

Mia - Julge/brave (No1 - 7181) fledged on Aug 23 at 09:14:31 and on Aug 28 at 09:41:07 Julge definitely flew away.
Last news 09-25-2021 in the morning after 2728 km.

So great to see all the Australian nests doing well… we’re used to so many sad issues !
good news from the other side of the world

In New Zealand after the departure of Tiaki, 2021 chick 9 days ago, the dad of 2020 chick Atawhai, OGK, returned and waited for his mate YRK.
During Atawhai breeding season OGK got injured but healed enough to take care of his chick even when he was obviously in pain. I’m so happy to see him very healthy :rh:

These birds are really incredible, flying all Pacific Ocean and being back on the same spot to start a new clutch.
