Today, Thunder’s mom, audacity, has a new chick. Thunder is west end mom, the nest that lost 3 chicks last week due to ravens !
At sauces nest, a bit further than West end, Audacity laid 3 eggs but 2 broke at the beginning of the clutch. So this little one will be alone !
Welcome little one and congratulations to Jack and Audacity !
(Sorry the nest bowl is very deep)

Sadly the first big bear chick didn’t survive the hatching. It’s not sure what happened. We only hope the 2nd chick is ok and will hatch normally.
RIP little one - such a short life !

Re: The Wildlife Corner
Congratulations to Liberty and Guardian for their 2
Jackie and Samson aren’t that lucky... their second egg isn’t hatching unfortunately.
So many losses for them ! They don’t deserve this maybe there’s an issue with Jackie, one of her egg broke inside her on their first clutch of the season, the first egg of second clutch looked crushed at the beginning and failed to hatch... that’s so sad
Sadly too I saw yesterday Mr P. Waiting for hours on his nest... leaving then coming back and waiting for nothing. Maybe the new female V5 is too young- she still has dark feathers. But it’s heartbreaking as it’s the 3rd season without clutch for this nest.

Update from US Forest Service ~ San Bernardino National Forest 3.24.21
"Today, March 24, is the 40th day of incubation for our second bald eagle egg in the Big Bear nest. The odds of it hatching are exceedingly low at this point.
Incubation typically ranges between 35-38 days. What we've seen in our Big Bear nest is that the eggs are laid three days apart and the first one takes 38 days before hatching and the second one about 35 days. Incubation for the first egg is slightly delayed so that the eggs hatch about a day apart. At 40 days, hatching of egg #2 is extremely unlikely. This egg was either infertile or failed to develop all the way and died during incubation. Unfortunately, the eaglet from Egg #1 died during the hatching process. This is the second clutch of eggs that our pair laid this year. Jackie and Shadow never fully engaged in incubation with the first clutch in January, leaving them alone and they were eaten by ravens.
What happens now? At this point, it's likely that they'll continue to incubate for another week or two and then eventually start leaving the egg for longer and longer periods. It is extremely unlikely that they would lay another clutch of eggs this year. It's getting too late in the breeding season for them, and it is a very high energy endeavor.
It is not unusual for bald eagles to have a run of bad luck; some studies have documented overall nesting success averaging about 50-60%. Survival rates during the first year of life are around 50%.
We are all disappointed—watching our eagle family is such a thrill and gives some us a way to de-stress. We will let you know if anything changes."
