Please contribute to the rehabilitation of Eagle 45/D (aka Alo) from the Bald Canyon eagle nest on San Clemente Island. He swallowed a fishing hook attached to a fish on 6/1/23. We rescued and transported him to a rehab facility near San Diego on 6/2/23. Donations made to IWS for Alo’s care using the Donate button below will be forwarded directly to the rehab facility. We will provide updates below as we receive them.

6/3/23: The fish hook is in the lower GI tract and “free-floating”. The veterinarian was unable to remove it endoscopically. A specialist will be examining 45/D on 6/4 and a plan will be developed for the hook removal.

https://www.iws.org/45d?fbclid=IwAR2njJ ... i9UQOa6c2g
Status Updates:

6/4/23: A second endoscopic removal attempt was unsuccessful in reaching the hook. The treatment team is attempting one last trick before resorting to surgery - feeding him fish stuffed with cotton balls to either elicit vomiting or to provide padding around the hook as it moves through the digestive system. This is believed to be less risky than surgery. The next update is expected late evening on 6/5/23.
Status Updates:

6/6/23: Alo has been eating and pooping, but the hook has not moved. The center is calling the surgeon today to try to schedule a surgery for 6/7. Recovery would likely be several weeks. Alo is feisty and doing well overall. Thank you to our supporters for donating over $6400 for his care and recovery so far. We will forward that on soon and continue to collect donations for his future care.

Murphys and his Eaglet Rock Baby's stories

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE FUTURE SEPARATION FOR THE GOOD OF MURPHY AND HIS EAGLET 😢🤞👍❤️❤️❤️

From https://www.facebook.com/WorldBirdSanctuary
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

World Bird Sanctuary 10 h ·

23-126 is at it again, trying to steal Murphy's food! Will he be successful this time? And yes, there is still a whole pile of other food he could have chosen from on the mat.

We are also now at the stage where it is time for 23-126 to graduate to the large flight! We had originally planned to move Murphy with 23-126 as we wanted 126 to continue to have an adult role model. Over recent weeks, we've become concerned that 23-126 is perhaps learning a bit too well from Murphy, and has been much more reluctant to fly than he should be by this age. You can see in how 126 moves around the enclosure that he is mimicking Murphy's movements to get around by walking rather than trying to fly.

Our staff has tried encouraging 126 to fly to get away from us, but he still mostly just runs away. This process can also be stressful to Murphy, which is not something we want him to have to experience. While we want 126 to be evasive and try to get away from humans, we don't want to make Murphy afraid of us. The stress of us encouraging 126 to fly while Murphy is in the enclosure could be detrimental to Murphy's long-term wellbeing with us. Given this, we have made the difficult decision to separate them, at least temporarily, to start getting 126 to fly.

At this point, the best thing for 23-126 would be for him to have a flighted adult to watch and continue to learn from. Fortuitously, we have an adult bald eagle patient who is also ready for the large flight. We plan on introducing the adult and 126 to the large flight at the same time later this week. We will watch them very closely to ensure the new adult does not show any aggression toward 126.

In addition to seeing an adult fly, this will also give 126 a valuable learning experience before he has to go out to the wild. He will have to learn to eat his share of food quickly before another bird takes it. He will also have to learn to either defend his food or steal it from an adult who is less of a pushover than Murphy. Don't worry though, there will be plenty of food for both eagles to eat their fill so they won't have to actually fight over it.
To ease the transition, Murphy will remain in their current enclosure, which shares a wall with the large flight. Murphy and 126 will still be able to see each other through the slats and vocalize to each other. Murphy may be reintroduced at a later date once 23-126 has figured out that he is supposed to be flying.

We will have a couple more videos of Murphy and 126 for you to enjoy and then the camera will be following 126 to the big flight so you can continue to watch him develop.
