West end Eagles nest - Catalina islands

Thunder and Akecheta (the guy with these horrible tags on his wings) have three eggs !

We wish them a better success this time. The last 2 seasons Akecheta was the new and young male who chased Superman the former dad. Each time the clutch failed for being abandoned the 1st year for too long and last year they arrived very close to hatch but ravens waited for the parents to leave the nest to attack the nest and eat the eggs / chicks. Hope this turns ok this time even if 3 eggs/chicks is a lot !

I must say that Philjo won't post anything due to him being sick in hospital. I'm praying he's doing better very soon  :brknhrt:

Osceola, the 41yo ambassador eagle passed away last week end.

Fly high and free beautiful one

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our original bald eagle ambassador, Osceola.

Osceola's story begins in 1981 in a field in eastern Arkansas. Two hunters spotted an immature Bald eagle on the ground unable to fly. Upon rescue, it was clear that the eagle had suffered a severe wing injury. A decision was made to amputate the wing to save the bird’s life, but he would never fly again.

His handler, John Stokes, became determined to help this winged ambassador soar again. Using his skills as a paraglider pilot, John constructed and evaluated a harness for Osceola. In 1995, after fourteen years of being flightless, Osceola had wings once more, and John had the unprecedented privilege of soaring with a bald eagle.

Throughout his lifetime, Osceola has educated thousands of people and was the first eagle on stage at Dollywood. Osceola even appeared on the Today Show with Dolly Parton. Before she went on camera, she jokingly said to John, “Don’t let Osceola snatch my hair off on national tv!”

Throughout his 41 years, Osceola's role as an educational ambassador has left an indelible mark on American Eagle Foundation and inspired countless to protect bald eagles and other birds of prey. Today, we honor his inspiring story and his magnificent bond with our Board Vice President John Stokes. Our thoughts and prayers are with John and Dale. We know they will miss Osceola, and so will AEF.

Hello group, years ago I followed this forum when it was Chatters Nest. When I finally registered as a user I didn’t realize it was renamed.

I’ve found it again and hope to join the discussion. Hello everyone.

Fly free Osceola, what an amazing story of this eagle and his carers.
