Not far from Port Lincoln, Aus

2021.09.14 - Tumby Island - This highlights how lucky we are to have the nest on the barge. The Tumby Island nest had two eggs ready to hatch any day. Last night a fox paid them a visit 😡😢 and took the eggs. If it wasn't for the camera we would never have known what happened.

In Big Sur, California Condor Sanctuary, many Concerns for Junipero condor # 663. Already last July his female, PNP #438, died of lead poisoning, leaving Janipero alone to take care of their young one # 1077 born on April 20. ( viewtopic.php?p=491114#p491114 ).
the day before and Yesterday Junipero was seen at the sanctuary where It is obvious that he has a problem with his left (all black) leg.

Hi Viewers,
Thank you for the reporting on Junipero's (#663) limp. We have Biologists in the area trying to locate Junipero to get a better look at his foot. It's difficult to say at this stage if he's injured or if he has something stuck to his foot. He is currently rearing a wild chick (#1077) as a solo parent so it's important we get a better look at his foot before we make our next move.
Thank you again for your keen cam observations, we greatly appreciate the support. - VWS Condor Crew"

#663 Junipero was spotted around 15:45. His left foot does not look good...😔 He approached the carcass but did not try to feed. Other condors did not eat much either today."

I went back to your time of when Junipero was there and was stunned to see what looks to be bone exposed proximal to his ankle with gangrene distally. Don't know if condors can tolerate an amputation, but it looks as if that may be an only solution at this point. He is capable of ground travel by hopping on the good extremity and keeping his balance without using the bad foot as a stabilizer and he started at one point to pull at the food without making contact, but he changed his mind. Thinking they may have to rescue #1077 and hoping that nest is assessable, but I am unfamiliar with their nest site location. So sorry to see this."

Junipero Update
Hi Viewers,
A follow-up on Junipero's (#663, purple tag 63) injured leg/foot. He showed up briefly yesterday afternoon and stuck around just long enough to get a close look at his left leg/foot with the cam. Based on the footage, a condor team veterinarian confirmed that necrosis has taken over his lower leg and foot. As to what caused this, we can't determine that from the photo alone, possibly a bone break, but hard to say. He showed up again this afternoon and actually drank water and fed on a carcass briefly before he was flushed off by Shadow. We were able to get additional looks at his injury today and it does appear he may have signs of a bone break, again, not completely conclusive at this stage.
So this is a call to action for all condor cam watchers to keep an eye out for Junipero. Continue to post photos and provide details about his behavior, it's such a huge to help to us.
Despite his unfortunate situation, Junipero is still flying quite well and we even picked up his radio signal toward his nest site earlier this week. Junipero doesn't appear to be emaciated at this stage, which is very encouraging. As you know, wildlife are amazingly resilient and can overcome serious injuries in the wild and find ways to survive.
Junipero is currently rearing a wild chick (#1077) as a solo parent at an extremely remote nest location in Big Sur, so that makes his situation even more difficult. Chick #1077 is almost 6 months old and should be fledging any day now.
Current plan- The Pinnacles team is on standby and will be ready to trap him in the event he shows up at their release site. We will continue to track his movements very closely in Big Sur and keep baiting the feeding site in hopes of spotting him on the cam.
Big thanks to beabee Cali Condor

Soar like an eagle; but swim like one too?

By Jessica Stanaway

"Passengers on the Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours got an extended tour and a bonus “up North” story to tell when the crew spotted a bald eagle struggling to swim away from the MacArthur Lock. Captain Larry Spencer, narrator Kari Eliason and dock master Kathy Morton were in the pilot house upbound when they spotted the eagle using its wings to propel itself through the water.

The eagle’s location made rescue a necessity, since the area below the locks in is entirely enclosed by concrete walls. There was nowhere the eagle could reach a shore, and it would eventually have tired and drowned without their intervention.

The crew immediately went into action with Kari and Kathy using a walkie-talkie from the lower deck to guide the captain to maneuver the boat nearer the eagle. ..."

Condor Update
Hi Viewers,
A follow-up on Junipero's (#663, purple tag 63) injured leg/foot. We are hopeful he will visit the sanctuary to feed in the next day or two to get a look at his leg injury. Please continue to post photos and provide details about his behavior, it's such a huge to help to us. Despite his unfortunate situation, Junipero is still flying quite well and we even picked up his radio signal toward his nest yesterday.
Junipero is currently rearing a wild chick (#1077) as a solo parent at an extremely remote nest location in Big Sur, so that makes his situation even more difficult. Chick #1077 is almost 6 months old and should be fledging any day now.
The Pinnacles team is still on standby to trap him in the event he shows up at their release site. We will continue to track his movements very closely in Big Sur and keep baiting the feeding site in hopes of spotting him on the cam.

San Simeon Pre-releases:
If you haven't already noticed, the pre-release birds at San Simeon received their new orange tags and radio/GPS transmitters on Monday afternoon. Iniko, currently at LA Zoo, will soon be joining the group mid-October. We are so excited to get her back and can't wait to release her and the other pre-releases over the next few months!
If all goes to plan we will release the first group (2-3 birds) in late October and a second group, that will include Iniko, in early December.
Iniko will go in the second release group because she will need at least 4-6 weeks acclimation time at the release pen before she is set free.
As we get closer to release time, we will let everyone know when to tune in to the San Simeon Cam to watch it live-streaming.
Until then, please help us keep an eye out for 663, thank you!
