Hi everyone! We could use more observers at our HWF nests, if anyone has a bit of time - thanks!
Announcement
We are on hatch watch at two of our HWF cam nests, Surrey Reserve and Delta 2 - and we would love to have more people watching and posting observations there!

Surrey Reserve
Today is Day 36 for the first egg - this is our first year watching this nest, so we don't know when their first egg usually hatches, but eagle eggs usually hatch between 35 and 40 days, so we could see a pip (the initial hole in the shell) at any point.

Link to the cams - https://hancockwildlife.org/surrey-reserve-cams/

Link to our observation thread - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=333&start=2100

The female is named Res and the male is named Sur - for Surrey and Reserve; there are pictures to help you know who is who in the opening posts of the thread - but at this point we're most interested in pictures of the eggs, especially once a pip is confirmed.

Here is gemini's screenshot of Mom Res turning the eggs from yesterday:
Image

Delta 2
Today is Day 35 for the first egg; the Delta 2 pair often delays incubation of the first egg so both hatch within a day or so - so don't be surprised if the first egg doesn't hatch until Monday or Tuesday or even Wednesday.

Link to the cams - https://hancockwildlife.org/delta-2-cams/

Link to our observation thread - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=335

The parents are called Ma Delta and Trooper, and there are ID pictures in the opening posts. This is Trooper's first year at the nest - he's been great tending the eggs, and we're waiting to see his reaction when the eggs start peeping and demanding food!

Here is SueB's screenshot from yesterday of Ma with the eggs:

Please join us at one of these nests and help us document the action!

At Dale Hollow tonight an owl attacked Mom River ( no problems for the 3 eaglets even if the owl stayed a couple of minutes close to the nest.
River is back this morning and already fed DH6, DH7 and DH8

two days ago we had the sauces only eaglet who fell on his back and got stuck in it, he couldn't get up. he was trying hard and got exhausted. audacity/mom was watching him helpless... it lasted 2 hours and mom started to dig nest material all around him and finally he was able to free himself

so scary!

The Washington Post newspaper ran a feature about the TRIO nest.
Date: 13 April 2019
I didn't post the link, but if you Search for
Washington Post, Trio Eagles you will see it.
For those of you who already follow this nest, nothing new.
But I think it is neat that the Post picked it up. :)

:grhug: for my French friends re Notre Dame.

I visited Paris and, of course, Notre Dame many years ago. A wonderful memory. It is a sadness not just for France but for the world. Just thankful no one was hurt. It will be rebuilt!

Congrats to Big Bear. Did I read somewhere that Shadow is a sibling of Mrs. BB? Anyway, he is at least brooding while Mrs. BB goes hunting, so... :luck:

I took this scap from Decorah babies :rh:
DM2 the new dad is an excellent provider and mom D is... Mom D.
I asked lady hawk about shadow being an offspring of mom BB. she's more an expert than me on this nest. Shadow is not Jackie Mom big bear offspring... she's only 6 years old lol.

Hi Pascale.

Great scap of the Decorah cuties. I was watching that cuddle puddle scene live. Gotta love the sibling pillow lol.

Thanks for trying to find out about Shadow. I know he's not Mrs. BB's offspring. I thought I read that he might be her younger brother, but I could be mistaken about that too. I don't follow this nest closely, but look in from time to time. Wishing them well.

Welcome BB3 and BB4; I guess the local 3rd grade kids will get the chance to give them names, which I think is a great way to do it. Help to establish love for wildlife in the little kids. The first hatch was a bit scary with the egg shell all broken around it; glad BB3 is doing well. Shadow is learning, and I think he'll figure everything out pretty quickly.

Just like DM2 who sure knows now that it's his role to bring in the food; I think one day there were 7 fish on the nest! That video of D32 getting stuck on Mom's feathers was terrifying. I couldn't watch it a second time. It looked like the little one was choking at first. It must have been the propulsion of Mom leaving the nest that it was finally able to get free. And then the poor little one was upside down.
Pascale, thanks for the cuddle puddle pic - so darling!

I hate to see those owls pestering eagle families.

The Trio nest article has been around the world. Saw a mention from a New Zealand newspaper. I believe this is the original article from Audubon; the WP article actually had a few mistakes. https://www.audubon.org/news/a-rare-bal ... y0DV6qlJeg

Pascale and Phillippe and all those who have ties to France and love France and it's people - my heart goes out to you and your beautiful country on the devastating fire to Notre Dame. This is tragic not only to France, but to the world; Notre Dame has such significance to so many people. My thoughts are with France and their people.

Phillippe, we so regret not visiting the interior. We saw the beautiful Notre Dame cathedral from a Seine River cruise and drove by it during a tour of the City. We, of course, wanted to go inside, but our time in Paris was very limited.

It was last year on April 18 that Dad Decorah disappeared. Raptor Resource Project is doing a special one year remembrance of Dad on their Facebook page and on chat at the link below.

I still can't talk about Dad D without tearing up. Here is my remembrance of this very special eagle Dad:

One year already, and still Dad Decorah is so missed by so many. He was my first love in the eagle world, and I will always carry him in my heart. Dad's antics were so amusing: flower deliveries of corn husks for Mom, whittling on the tree, trying to get his turn for incubating those precious eggs, and the Beakerson's moments (they were like an old married couple who knew each other so well). He was such a wonderful protector and provider; a master fisherman, who brought piles of fresh fish and other prey to feed his young'uns; shielding the little e's from the elements and helping Mom to cover them; and overall just being a great help mate to his love and a dedicated and devoted Dad to their precious eaglets. When Dad soared away to the Rainbow Bridge, he took a piece of my heart with him.

Yes the cross and spire toppled over the tallest of the building. Someone said the church roof was in the shape of a cross. It is like me going into St. Patricks cathedral but not really going in not really seeing it. But only taking in what I can.

Oh, Philjo, such beautiful images of Dad's light shining on Mom and the babies in his nest. These images really touched my heart and brought a smile to my face. I do believe Dad is still watching and protecting the nest, just in a different way.

Pascale, thank you for your kind words and hug.

Carolyn, I love your beautiful words about an eagle touching your heart.

Thank you all, dear friends, for your love and support.
