Seine-et-Marne: a fox dies of avian flu, a first in France
A fox has contracted the bird flu virus in Seine-et-Marne. It is the 3rd mammal affected by the disease in France. Should we fear transmission to humans?
For nearly two years, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been particularly vigilant about the spread of virus A (H5N1), the highly pathogenic avian influenza epizootic, more commonly known as avian flu. Cases are increasing in domestic poultry and wild birds. But the disease has spread to other animals recently.
A fox with bird flu in Seine-et-Marne
On February 10, three foxes were found dead in the Grand Voyeux reserve, in Congis-sur-Thérouanne, in Seine-et-Marne, by one of the green space agents of the AVEN du Grand Voyeux. According to the World Organization for Animal Health, these animals were near gulls, which also died.
One of the foxes, collected and analyzed by the French Office for Biodiversity, was carrying the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, confirms the prefecture of Seine-et-Marne.
Congis-sur-Thérouanne is in a large restricted area, as cases of birds infected with avian influenza have been regularly confirmed there since January.
Prefecture of Seine-et-Marne
According to ANSES (National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety), it is very likely that the infection of the fox was due to the scavenging of wild birds infected with this virus.
Cases on extremely rare mammals in France
It is the third mammal to have contracted the virus in France. A captive collared bear was infected at the end of November 2022 and a domestic cat was also a carrier of avian flu in December 2022, in Deux-Sèvres.
ANSES was actively involved in the investigation of this case, which made it possible to identify the neighboring duck farm as being the source of the cat's contamination.
Public health France
All of these cases are linked to scavenging or indirect transmission of the virus through the locally contaminated environment, according to ANSES.
Should we fear transmission to humans?
With this epizootic, fear is growing about a possible transmission of the bird flu virus to humans. The WHO wishes to reassure: “the risk of transmission to humans of the avian influenza viruses with zoonotic potential that are currently circulating is low”. Today in France, no human case has been documented.
Recently, two human cases of A(H5N1) virus infection were detected in Cambodia. "According to the WHO, the viral strain in question does not belong to clade 2.3.4.4b, but to another clade (2.3.2.1c), endemic to Cambodia for several years," says Public Health France.
After this case on a fox in Seine-et-Marne, the prefecture still wants to warn passers-by. “Walkers and breeders are recommended not to handle birds found dead and to report this to the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) or to the Departmental Federation of Hunters (FDC) or to the DDPP (Direction Department of Population Protection). »

"I just saw an eagle crash into the construction site!" This is essentially the not trivial call received this Wednesday, the Paloume association, an association responsible for the protection of wildlife. After a photo verification, the members of the association are formal. It is indeed the Aquila chrysaetos, commonly called "Golden Eagle". Caregivers come to the scene. They discover a very weak and injured raptor.
Particularly emaciated, the eagle has its two legs fractured a long time ago. Its talons no longer allow it to hunt or land. Under veterinary supervision, the healers decide to euthanize him to shorten his suffering. Presumably this juvenile individual of about two years was lost. In France, the golden eagle lives exclusively in the mountains, far from Rions-des-Landes. Only 250 pairs of this raptor fly over the French mountains, divided between the Pyrenees, the Alps, Corsica and the Massif-Central.

A hunter killed an extremely rare bird of prey from the Eagles of Lake Geneva
Arrested in Isère, a poacher admitted to having killed a white-tailed eagle. The young female white-tailed eagle was named Morzine. (Pascale’s goddaughter)
Eagles of Lake Geneva
At the end of February, a resident of the Aigles du Léman was shot dead in the L'Oisans region, in Isère. It was an extremely rare and strictly protected raptor, a white-tailed eagle. This week, the poacher who killed him was arrested and questioned. He admitted the facts.
The sad discovery was made on February 24 in the town of La Salette-Fallavaux, some 1,700 meters away. The remains of a bullet-hit eagle were then discovered. The remains of the raptor were discovered in the Oisans massif, at an altitude of 1700 meters
The bird had a GPS transmittertag. It was a young one-year-old sea eagle who was part of a reintroduction program. Named Morzine, she was born in captivity at Aigles du Léman, the park in Sciez (Haute-Savoie), in neighboring France, dedicated to the protection and conservation of birds of prey. She was released at the beginning of September.
Feathers as a trophy
An investigation was then carried out by the French Biodiversity Office, assisted by the Monestier-de-Clermont gendarmerie. Two hunters aged 35 and 30, from the same family, were quickly identified. They were taken into custody on Wednesday, reports https://france3-regions.francetvinfo.fr ... 38791.html
On February 24, these two men allegedly illegally killed two deers. Then they saw the raptor with a wingspan of more than two meters. One of them opened fire, hitting and killing the majestic bird. He took a few feathers from the corpse before continuing on his way. They were found in his home during a search. He admitted the facts during interrogation.
Charged with “destruction, possession and transport of protected species”, this man risks up to three years in prison and a fine of 150,000 euros. His partner is being prosecuted for complicity.
Although she was born in captivity, Morzine had acclimated to freedom and lived near a river, not far from Grenoble. “Until she met two idiots who decided that her journey was going to end there,” complains on France 3 Jacques-Olivier Travers, founder of the Eagles of Léman. For him, it is an “unbearable gratuitous act”.
Fourteen birds from the Lake Geneva Park have been released since 2022. Morzine is the third to be slaughtered.

*The remains of an eagle, mutilated to "make a trophy", had already been discovered in Germany last April. This second slaughter therefore increases anger among those working for its reintroduction. “When you kill an eagle, you are not just killing an animal, you are killing all the hope of the people who participated in its reintroduction. If we let it happen, there is no point in fighting,” insists the falconer.
(This one was called Sciez and was also a Pascale’s goddaughter) He had been mutilated on the spot (dead or alive for that matter) and found himself without a head or legs.
