Liberty, Audubon’s Bald Eagle has passed
by auduboncnc | Oct 25, 2022 | Uncategorized | 2 comments Liberty, Audubon Community Nature Center’s non-releasable Bald Eagle, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 after a series of recent health setbacks. Liberty arrived at Audubon in 2002 from the state of Washington, where a local woman discovered her with an injured wing. Liberty spent a year in rehabilitation at the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center, but they deemed her non-releasable due to the nature of her injury. She was at least 25 years old, but quite possibly older. In the wild, Bald Eagles live for 20 – 30 years, though they can live longer in captivity.
Liberty’s presence touched thousands of children, families, and adults over her two decades at the Nature Center. She brought a sense of wonder and awe to all those who came to admire her. She will be dearly missed by all.
Thom Armella, Liberty’s primary care taker, spent more than 7,000 hours of volunteer service carefully ensuring her well-being. A debt of gratitude is owed to Thom and to Dr. Bill Seleen who served as Liberty’s original veterinarian and who has provided his guidance as her health deteriorated. Donations in memory of Liberty can be made to the Audubon Community Nature Center at: auduboncnc.org/donate/

BIRD FLU FOUND IN BALD EAGLE IN WEST SEATTLE..
This is really sad news for West Seattle. HPAI seems to be running a course here and Tuesday morning the latest bird to be impacted is one of the mated pair from Lincoln Park. This pair successfully fledged two eaglets this year from their nest above Colman Pool.
Washington state officials and conservationists are warning of cases of avian influenza located in West Seattle's Lincoln Park and across the state, asking people to watch for symptoms and report them in hopes of stopping the spread. "It got quiet in the summer and then during migration - September, October - we got a resurgence of it," urban conservation specialist Kersti Muul said. Muul volunteers her time to help sick and wounded birds and has been called out to several suspected cases of bird flu in recent weeks, including a bald eagle in Lincoln Park. Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, includes infections from multiple strains of viruses. They are classified into low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI), which causes either no signs or mild signs of disease, and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), which is more likely to sicken and kill birds. In May of 2022, the Washington Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of avian influenza in several backyard bird flocks. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has since confirmed the disease in wild birds. A dashboard of cases can be found here. WDFW has confirmed at least 18 cases of HPAI in bald eagles, but reports there are likely more. Once the department knows one bird has been confirmed with avian influenza in an area, they mark that area as harboring infections and do not test more birds in the same vicinity. In addition, birds in untested areas may die from the illness before being found and tested. But bald eagles are just one in a number of bird species in which HPAI has been detected. Whatcom County recently saw a die-off in geese. READ THE FULL STORY: https://www.king5.com/article/tech/scie ... e3aaac98f4

https://www.mprnews.org/story/2023/01/0 ... -Re-5etW9Y After weeks of medical treatment, six bald eagles that were found poisoned last month near the Twin Cities were released back into the wild on Friday.
The University of Minnesota Raptor Center released the eagles at Carpenter Nature Center, along the St. Croix River near Hastings.
They were among 11 eagles found poisoned near a landfill in Inver Grove Heights in early December.
The Raptor Center said the first was found Dec. 4, nine more on Dec. 5 and one more on Dec. 6.
The Raptor Center reported the eagles were “suffering from pentobarbital poisoning, the primary agent used in euthanasia solution. Eagles can get secondary poisoning if they scavenge on the body of an animal that was euthanized with the chemical.”
Officials confirmed that carcasses of euthanized animals had recently been brought to the landfill.....
