2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
Image

And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.

We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
Image

At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.

And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.

With that in mind....
Image

We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.

The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!

Aug. 21, 2021 | Giant panda Xiao Qi Ji holds a heart made of frozen diluted apple juice.
This morning, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute celebrated giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji’s (SHIAU-chi-ji) first birthday with a specially tailored fruitsicle cake. Mother Mei Xiang (may-SHONG) and father Tian Tian (tYEN-tYEN) also enjoyed fruitsicle cakes in honor of their son’s birthday. The public watched the pandas enjoy their cakes live on the Zoo’s Giant Panda Cam.
When Mei Xiang and Xiao Qi Ji entered their outdoor habitat at 7:30 a.m., they approached Mei Xiang’s cake first. The base of the cake and heart topper were made of frozen diluted apple juice. It was decorated with sweet potato, apple, carrot, pear, sugar cane, banana and bamboo. Around 8:15 a.m., they walked over to Xiao Qi Ji’s cake, which was adorned with a giant number 1 on top. The base of the cake was made of frozen diluted grape juice and decorated with sweet potato, apple, carrot, pear, sugar cane, banana and bamboo.

This update was written by Laurie Thompson, assistant curator of giant pandas.
Last Saturday, Aug. 21, was a big day for our “little miracle.” Giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji celebrated his first birthday :cake: and shared not one but two delicious fruitsicle cakes with his mother, Mei Xiang. We want to thank everyone who tuned in to the Giant Panda Cam or who came to the Zoo to see the birthday boy enjoy his special day. We were glad to share this happy occasion with you!
Mei Xiang was the first to step outside at 7:30 a.m. She took in the warm, clear morning, then set her sights on a frozen fruitsicle cake in the distance. While Xiao Qi Ji dawdled near the Panda House, Mei Xiang made a b-line for the sweet treat, lovingly prepared by our talented commissary keeper Nick Schiraldi.
Our giant panda cub and his mother, Mei Xiang, received two panda-friendly fruitsicle cakes.
She opted to eat the bamboo stalks that sprouted from the cake first. When Xiao Qi Ji trotted over to his mother, he reached for the decorative fruit and veggie slices that adorned the cake. Once those had all been consumed, he grabbed the giant heart made of frozen-diluted apple juice and rolled around in the greenery.
Xiao Qi Ji is growing up, and that means he is less reliant on mother Mei Xiang’s milk for his nutritional needs (though he may still nurse for comfort from time to time). Just like his parents, he now receives his very own diet bin from our Department of Nutrition Science. In addition to bamboo, Xiao Qi Ji regularly eats apples, carrots, nutritionally fortified biscuits and, of course, cooked sweet potatoes. Keepers feed these items to him throughout the day when Mei Xiang is not around since she would likely eat it first! Our growing cub now weighs 61 pounds (27.8 kilograms).
China’s new Ambassador to the United States, Qin Gang, reflects on our precious panda’s special day and our shared goal to conserve the species.
As keeper Mariel Lally mentioned in her last update, it seems that Xiao Qi Ji can make anything and everything a fun toy. Last week, however, he received a new enrichment item every day as part of his week-long birthday celebration. These toys encourage our giant pandas to keep physically active and mentally sharp; they also give the bears an opportunity to use their natural behaviors and choose how to spend their time.
Panda keepers picked out seven "beary" special toys to give Xiao Qi Ji during his birthday week. In the second clip, he holds the puzzle feeder over his head and shakes the treats inside right into his mouth just like his mother, Mei Xiang!
Whenever Xiao Qi Ji approaches a new toy, he sniffs it, paws at it, gives it a nibble—or does some combination of all three. Of all the items he received, the blue rocker seems to be his favorite. He climbs inside it, rolls around and has even slid down the hill in it a few times!

We are celebrating yet another special birthday today. Xiao Qi Ji’s father { August 27 :cake: }, Tian Tian, is 24 years old! Keep an eye on the Giant Panda Cam—you may see Tian Tian enjoying his fruitsicle cake, some decorative birthday boxes, and a new toy!
Conservation success stories—like the birth of a giant panda cub—are worth celebrating all year long. To commemorate Xiao Qi Ji’s first birthday, we have launched a limited-edition collection featuring tees, totes, mugs and other products inspired by our special bear. If you would like to pick up a memento, head over to NationalZooPanda.com. Proceeds from your purchase benefit animal care and conservation science at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Thank you for your continued support. We couldn’t save species without you!

#PandaStory: A Splashing Good Time
Sep. 24, 2021
This update was written by giant panda keeper Marty Dearie.

[Giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji turned 13 months old Sept. 21, 2021.
Xiao Qi Ji is becoming more independent.
Giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji's favorite pastimes include climbing and playing in water.

Giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji may have found a new favorite pastime. While keepers were hosing down the outdoor patio Sept. 16, our curious cub came over to supervise — and jumped right in the spray! Just like his father, Tian Tian, and mother, Mei Xiang, Xiao Qi Ji seems to enjoy playing in water, though each bear has his or her own unique style.
In my mind, the way Xiao Qi Ji interacts with the hose spray is similar to the way his older brother, Bei Bei, used to play. However, licking the spray — as he did Sept. 16 — is a trait that is unique to Xiao Qi Ji!
Our 13-month-old cub’s confidence has grown steadily, as has his independence. Xiao Qi Ji has been spending less time with Mei Xiang recently, and he does not seek out comfort from her as frequently as he once did.

Although Xiao Qi Ji is still nursing, he does so sparingly. By the time giant panda cubs are a year old, bamboo and other solid foods make up the majority of their diet. However, cubs may nurse for comfort up to 18 months of age. At most, we see him nurse once a day; sometimes, we do not see him nurse at all, though it is possible he could be nursing overnight.
Another sign our little cub is growing up: Xiao Qi Ji has been losing his deciduous (baby) teeth. Last week, keeper Mariel Lally spotted a small tooth on the ground while she was cleaning the pandas’ indoor habitat. Judging from the crumbs clinging to the tooth, it appears it wiggled free while he was eating his morning leafeater biscuits!
This story appears in the Sept. 24 issue of the Giant Panda Bulletin; read previous cub updates here. Tune in to the Giant Panda Cam. Planning a visit to the Zoo? Reserve your free entry pass or paid parking pass here.

IrishEyes you are so right and we can learn especially about pandas and eagles like Lil Syd, they can be so darlingly dramatic as closely as we see them on cams.

October has been a fun month for our 14-month-old giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji, who explores his environment through sensory enrichment! One autumn morning, keepers were cleaning the indoor enclosure that he shares with his mother, Mei Xiang, when they both approached the mesh and “supervised” our work.
Since we were not quite ready to let them back inside, we gave them some bubble bath solution—one of Mei Xiang’s favorite scents. When giant pandas enjoy a particular scent, they rub it all over themselves, a behavior called scent-anointing. It turned into a wrestling match with both pandas covered in the bubble bath, and the fur on their ears became spiky from the solution. It was great to see Xiao Qi Ji enjoy the scent in the same manner as his mother and with his mother!
It’s important that our pandas get some mental exercise every day, too. Puzzle feeders are a great tool for sharpening their problem-solving skills. Recently, Xiao Qi Ji received his very own puzzle feeder—a large purple ball with multiple holes. Since the openings are quite large, we will fill the feeder with hay to make the treats a little tougher to get out. Xiao Qi Ji must spin, shake or roll the feeder around until all of the biscuits and hay have fallen out. It’s a good mental workout since it takes both brain power and energy to move the treats from the puzzle feeder to his belly.
Every day, Xiao Qi Ji becomes more independent and seems to enjoy spending time by himself. While Mei Xiang enjoys her morning breakfast, her son busies himself with his own “projects”—futzing with tree branches, exploring the trees and climbing structure in his outdoor habitat, or scaling the rockwork in his indoor habitat. Occasionally, he is so preoccupied with playing that he chooses not to spend time with his mother until the afternoon!
Although we still see Xiao Qi Ji nurse for comfort from time to time, the majority of his diet is made up of bamboo, fruit and high fiber biscuits. He receives his own diet twice a day; we feed him separately from Mei Xiang to ensure she does not eat his portions. Lately, he has become much more efficient at eating—not to mention protective of his treats. If Mei Xiang dares to come near “his” food, he can be seen and heard giving her a piece of his mind! When Xiao Qi Ji chooses to follow Mei Xiang around, he usually tries to sneak a bite of whatever she’s eating. He is growing nicely. At his last weigh-in, he tipped the scales at 72 pounds. This time last year—when he was just 9 weeks old—he weighed 7.5 pounds!

Our red pandas Asa (pictured here) and Chris-Anne enjoyed some not-so-spooky Halloween treats, too!
The giant panda team is looking forward to celebrating Halloween this Sunday. Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and Xiao Qi Ji along with red pandas Asa and Chris-Anne will receive pumpkins for enrichment, of course. And, I whipped up a few “candy corn” fruitsicles for them as well made from frozen-diluted apple juice and food coloring. Be sure to tune into the Giant Panda Cam on Sunday. You may catch them trick-or-treating!

#PandaStory: Winter Comes Early For Xiao Qi Ji
Nov. 29, 2021
This update was written by assistant curator of giant pandas Laurie Thompson.

From the time our giant panda cub, Xiao Qi Ji, was 6 months old, he has been a very good listener. Now, at 15 months old, he regularly responds to keepers. When it is time for us to put more food in his outdoor habitat, we call the bears’ names so they know it’s time to come inside. Often, Xiao Qi Ji climbs down a tree or runs from the front of the habitat to see what treats keepers might have in store for him.
As keeper Mariel Lally mentioned in her last update, Xiao Qi Ji takes mealtime very seriously. Although he receives his own diet every day, we still see him sneak some food that was meant for his mother, Mei Xiang, from time to time. He is quite a clever boy and will steal her apple or carrot, then run to the top of the rockwork or into the den to eat it!
Thanks to his healthy appetite, Xiao Qi Ji has been growing steadily. Recently, he weighed-in at 82.5 pounds—10.5 pounds more than last month. We help him keep physically active by offering him a variety of enrichment to investigate—like a tub filled with toys and non-toxic bubble bath.
“Winter” came a little early to the David M. Rubenstein Family Giant Panda Habitat this year, care of our Department of Nutrition Science. Our commissary team provided us with a pallet of ice for all three pandas to play in. Like Mei Xiang and his father, Tian Tian, Xiao Qi Ji seems to be a big fan of the cold stuff. He had a blast conquering the ice “mountain” and even did some sledding

Meet Red Pandas Asa and Chris-Anne
Dec. 03, 2021

We may find the winter winds and snow frightful, but for red pandas Asa and Chris-Anne, the cold couldn’t be more delightful! Our firefoxes are big fans of frosty weather, thanks to some amazing (and adorable) adaptations—like fuzzy feet! Get to know our pandas’ personalities and insider tips on the best times to spot them from Asia Trail keeper Mariel Lally.
What are Asa and Chris-Anne’s personalities like?
Asa is very bold and clever! Throughout her time at the Zoo, she has lived with four red pandas. With the arrival of each new habitat-mate, Asa seems to be the “panda in charge.” She is always the first to shift outside for fresh food, as well as the first to participate in husbandry training sessions. Asa has unique relationships with each of her keepers and is quick to catch on to new training behaviors. We have to keep on our toes, or she will try to ‘outsmart’ us! Asa is a master at puzzle feeders and figures out how to retrieve treats—even from toys she has never seen before—in a flash.
Chris-Anne has lived at the Zoo for a little over a year, but she is still very curious about her environment and those around it. When it comes to investigating something new, Chris-Anne tends to be more reserved than Asa, allowing her to take the lead while she takes her time to assess the situation from afar. She has a quirky side and has interacted with keepers and the habitat in ways no other red panda has before. Chris-Anne seems to enjoy people-watching from the window in their indoor habitat.

Red pandas Asa (left) and Chris-Anne (right) explore their habitat on Asia Trail.

How do you tell them apart?
Asa and Chris-Anne’s coloration and markings are quite different. Asa’s forehead is a deep red, and her body is uniformly red along her back and hips. Chris-Anne, on the other hand, has a paler face and very blonde hips! When they are seated next to one another, it’s very easy to see that Asa is quite a bit bigger than Chris-Anne.

Red panda Chris-Anne munches on bamboo in her outdoor habitat.

Do they have a favorite hangout spot?
If you’re struggling to spot the red pandas, look up! As semi-arboreal animals, red pandas spend a lot of time way up high in the trees. Often, Chris-Anne can be seen at the top of the tree that is near their indoor habitat. Asa seems to prefer napping in the firehose triangles suspended from the trees.
