Re: Backyard Critters
Speaking of backyard critters, are you guys knowledgeable about the ones of the Mediteranean region? The thing is that I was planning some day to buy a house in Greece for the holidays, and would like to know which species to look out for: which ones are beneficial and should be protected, like swallows which need margarin and seeds in winter time, which ones are dangerous (snakes? Bugs?), which ones may be annoying but not nuisible...
Re: Backyard Critters
Sounds like an interesting question, Badger16, and if you do buy a house there, I'd love to see what "backyard critters" you discover!Badger16 wrote: ↑Mon May 27, 2019 9:26 amSpeaking of backyard critters, are you guys knowledgeable about the ones of the Mediteranean region? As any PNW hummingbird enthusiast will tell you, we have Anna's Hummingbirds all year 'round. I have 4 feeders up 24/7/365.
Following are some pics of my backyard critters

And now the Rufous are showing up.
Female, Southeast feeder: A female on the Southeast feeder: The first male that I've seen so far this year. On the North feeder. Sorry it's so dark but I just grabbed my camera and shot. I didn't think I'd have enough time to make any adjustments:

Wow, BillA, very cool to see. Our hummingbirds will not appear for a while (July ish) and stay until September ish. Usually only one will allow any in the yard (it's theirs!). They feast on our Hamelia bushes.
We currently have a Wren male and female that have made a nest on our back door wreath (fixed door, does not open), secure, safe from predators, protected from weather. This just started and so it will be interesting to see what happens. The nest is not perfect yet I believe and they keep bringing in pine needles. My cats love the entertainment (indoor cats), as my husband said "they hit the lottery

I get a lot of deer in my yard and it often goes in to the next door yard. This one was eating the neighbour's rose bush.
