Laysan Albatross ~ Kauai, Hawaii

Post by sassyk » Sat Feb 24, 2018 2:40 pm

Welcome to the Laysan Albatross cam for the 2017/2018 season.

This cam is made available through the Cornell Lab of Ornithololgy with thanks to the generous property owner on the beautiful island of Kauai, Hawaii.

Laysan Albatross

One of the most marvelous sights in the Pacific ocean is the graceful glide of a Laysan Albatross at play among the winds and waves. These expert soarers can travel hundreds of miles per day with barely a wingbeat. They nest on islands of the tropical Pacific, but they may head out to Japan, the Aleutian Islands, or California to feed. Laysan Albatrosses are numerous, though they face threats from longline fishing, plastic trash in the ocean, and predation by dogs, rats, and cats.

Laysan Albatrosses are pelagic birds of the open Pacific Ocean. Your best bet for finding one off the continental United States is to take a pelagic birding trip from the West Coast. Note that you are more likely to see Black-footed Albatrosses, but Laysan Albatrosses are fairly regularly seen as well. If you are in Hawaii, there are breeding populations on Oahu and Kauai where you can see the birds from land if you visit in the appropriate months (roughly November to July).
Click on the title for more details - many photos - and map.

When you click on the link to the live streaming video, there are boxes below the cam view that you can click for more information on the Laysan Albatross and there is a lot of very interesting info. There is also a link to Twitter if you wish to tweet your observations and s'caps (and have a Twitter account) here

Many thanks to the property owner who has made it possible this season to watch 3 different nests. Click on the Timeline box below the cam view to read about the chicks and their parents who occupy the three nests.

S'caps taken Feb. 17th.

Makali'i wanders out of the nest (#1) and picks at the grass. Eventually decided the leaf wasn't worth eating and dropped it.

A few more s'caps taken Feb. 17th during Makali'i's excursion out of the nest.

While practicing some wing flapping Makali'i fell face first into the nest.

Here's a cute video from the Laysan Albatross site, recorded Feb. 28th. Chicks Mo'ikeha and Kiamanu were having a little sparing match
:vid:

Another cute video from the Laysan Albatross site, recorded Feb. 26th. Chick Mo'ikeha in nest #2 takes a little stroll out of the nest for the first time
:vid:

This s'cap was posted on the Laysan Albatross site, taken during the incubation period. It shows that nests 2 & 3 are not as close as they appear on the cam view.

I recorded a video earlier of a very busy Mo'ikeha, chick in nest #2, preening, stretching, exercising her wings, going for a short stroll out of the nest, pooping in the grass, then waddling back to the nest.

Poor little Makali'i in nest #1 was being scolded by a visiting tross :( The visitor was getting
quite rough but I guess it's one of the social skills young trosses have to learn

This message was posted on the Cornell Albatross site on Apr. 10th. Keeping my fingers crossed that Jett will return unharmed.

April 10, 2018
Supplemental Feeding for Kiamanu After Jett's Disappearance
As many viewers have noticed, Jett, Kiamanu’s father, has not been seen on camera for more than six weeks. Although the mother, Bennie, has continued feeding Kiamanu during Jett’s absence, there is growing concern that she will be the sole provider if Jett does not return, raising the question of whether Kiamanu will receive enough food. Our partners at the Kauai Albatross Network and Save Our Shearwaters at the Kauai Humane Society, along with the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative and the Hawaii Wildlife Center, are working to monitor Kiamanu’s health. On Monday, April 9, they conducted their first assessment and are now planning to provide supplemental feedings until fledging (unless Jett returns.) These feedings should improve the likelihood that Kiamanu will survive to fledge while still only being fed by a single parent. Globally, Laysan Albatrosses are listed as near-threatened, with 99% of their breeding populations existing on low-lying atolls that are predicted to be submerged by sea level rise due to climate change. “High” islands like Oahu and Kauai are thought to be a key refuge for albatrosses in the future, and the birds are monitored with a goal of sustaining and increasing the breeding population. This management has included actions such as habitat restoration, predator fencing, translocating eggs into nests with infertile pairs, translocating chicks to establish new colony sites, and rehabilitation of chicks and adults when possible. Read our article from 2014 about the complex challenge of albatross conservation. You can help support the supplemental feeding efforts by making a donation via the Kauai Humane Society site (visit http://bit.ly/kiamanu-donation), being sure to write “For the Albatross Chick” in the large box on the form labeled "Send an Acknowledgement to" below your donation amount. Thanks to all of the viewers and cam operators who have tracked the movements of the albatrosses on cam, and to our partners involved in albatross conservation on Kauai. Click "More" for a version of this update with hyperlinked resources about albatross conservation on Kauai.

There has been devastating storms and flooding on the island of Kauai. Cornell Albatross posted this info on their site.

Cornell Albatross @AlbatrossCam

As many of our viewers have heard, Kauai was impacted very heavily by recent storms. It may be a week or more till internet service is restored—till then, we’re running a stream of cam highlights from over the years. Tweet your faves from these or other memories while we wait!

I snipped these s'caps from the Cornell Albatross site. Many thanks to the wonderful people who are taking care of Kiamanu in Jett's absence.
