Earlier this month while visiting Point Pelee and Rondeau Provincial Park for peak migration period, we saw eagles fairly regularly along the Lake Erie shoreline. The South Point trail at Rondeau goes along the shoreline, and this eagle managed to grab something very large while well out in the lake, at least a couple of hundred meters. At first it gave the impression the eagle might have gotten a duck, as the prey looked very large.



While still far offshore, the eagle almost immediately started getting harassed by a group of gulls.



For a while with the eagle still flying around trying to evade the gulls while still well offshore, it seemed a foregone conclusion that the gulls would eventually manage to get the eagle to give up on the prey, but this was a large fish not a duck.



After a minute or two the eagle did start turning and heading directly towards the shore with the gulls continuing to pursue.





Once the eagle got pretty much over the shoreline, the gulls seemed to decide at that point that they weren't going to be successful and gave up the chase.





The eagle eventually disappeared over the park, I wonder if it had a nest in the area.
