2023-2024 Season:

The pair began nesting along the Monongahela River in 2013, the first nesting pair of bald eagles in Pittsburgh in over 150 years. The nest is about 5 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, and you can see the city skyline in the background. The Hays webcam is a collaborative project between PixCams.com and the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, and there's more information about it on the cam page.

Welcome to the 14th year of watching eagles at Pittsburgh Hays!

I apologize for the delay in getting the thread set up for this year - and I'm afraid there's some sad news to start the season. According to the information I've found on Facebook and EagleStreamer.org, Mom and Dad both returned three months ago, on August 11, and did a bit of work on the nest, then took some time off, as is common during the late summer. Dad stopped by briefly on August 17 and August 20, and Mom made a brief visit on August 27. Dad came by the nest at 4:35 pm on September 7, and left around 5:30 pm. And that was the last confirmed sighting of Dad. Here are a couple of pictures from PixCams's video Hays Eagles Dad Come to the Nest Perches in the Attic 9.7.23 16:35

An experienced observer saw two adults flying in close proximity on September 13 but could not confirm that one was Dad. Two adults were also observed on September 16, and the observer reported that neither was Dad. On September 25, two adults visited the nest, and viewers reported that at least one was a stranger and not Dad. Over the next couple of days, there were additional sightings, and general agreement that the two eagles were Mom and a male who was not Dad.

The reports on eaglestreamer.org are great and include photos and video links - please do check them out if you'd like more information. Mom is generally referred to as M in the posts there, and the new male is referred to as V, for Visitor.

By mid-late October, Mom and the Visitor appeared to be working companionably on the nest and building their pair bond in the process.

On November 7, the male brought his first food to the nest; Mom rushed to claim it, and the male flew off with it. The observers noted that this suggested that he may be a younger eagle and this may be his first year of pairing with the intention of nesting.

They have been seen mating, so I think they are on track for chicks in the spring.

I took a look at the cam this afternoon, and found one of the adults at home!

I checked the dvr and was able to get a picture of both of them from 2:14 pm. Based on size, I think the male is the one in the nest finding the perfect place for a stick, while Mom is on a perch watching - but I don't know the camera enough to know for sure.

Added - a few minutes after the previous s'cap - I think I confirmed that it was the male who was working on the nest!

He left shortly after that, leaving Mom where I found her in the first picture in this post.
