Expect mostly sunny skies out there again today with highs in the lower 50's. Southwest winds increasing 10-20 mph with gusts to 30 mph during the afternoon. A new Pacific storm will approach the area tomorrow with clouds and winds on the increase. We should remain dry with cooler temperatures as highs drop into the 40's, southwest winds gusting to around 35 mph late. Low pressure off the California coast early Saturday will draw an atmospheric river with deep moisture into Southern California. Rain and snow will develop and could become heavy at times throughout the day with gusty southwest winds to 40 mph. The snow level will start off around 6,500 feet so we could see a little rain-snow mix ahead of the main cold front arriving later in the day. As the front passes through, the snow level will lower to around 5,500 feet Saturday night before falling to near 5,000 feet on Sunday as the cold core center of the lower moves in, a few thunderstorms are also possible. Several inches of rain can be expected on the lower coastal slopes with snowfall accumulations of around 1-2 feet expected above 6,000 feet. Even higher totals are possible in a few locations, especially at resort level and above 7,000 feet. Residual moisture and instability may generate additional snow showers Monday, ending Monday night as our storm finally exits the region. This has the potential to be very a major winter storm, somewhat uncommon for this late in the season. Travelers should pay close attention to the weather and not be caught off guard or unprepared if venturing into the mountains through the big holiday weekend! Fair and warmer spring weather will return by the middle of next week. The forecast will continue to be refined as we get closer to the weekend so check back often for regular updates!
