Decorah Iowa - 2022-23 - Bald Eagle Cam

Post by JudyB » Thu Oct 06, 2022 6:29 am

Work in Progress

Thanks to the Raptor Resource Project/RRP for bringing us this extraordinary look into the life of bald eagles. There is a lot more information about the Decorah eagles on their website here. All Raptor Resource Project cams are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License; in non-technical terms, this means people may post images or video taken from the cameras as long as credit is given to RRP and a link is provided to their website.

This Nest is in the Central Time Zone

As I write this in early October 2022, I'm not at all sure what we'll be watching this year. Last year the eagles who had been nesting here (Mom Decorah and DM2) moved to a new nest out of sight of the cams, a pair of geese successfully fledged 4 goslings from their old nest, and a new young pair of eagles showed an interest in a "starter nest" that had been built nearer the Hatchery (I think close to Mom Decorah's original nest). To keep the design of the thread as flexible as possible, I'm going to reserve more than the usual number of posts at the beginning of the thread, in case we want timelines for more than one nest - or to simplify things if we decide to split this into two threads. ~JudyB

Update - October 8: It looks as if the cams will be focusing on the Hatchery pair - HM (Hatchery Mom) and HD (Hatchery Dad)

Key Dates for the 2022-2023 Season:
  • cams on: October 8 at noon CST
  • adults return: Not Sure

    M laid egg #2 2/28/23 at 4:38 PM CT

    March 1
HM laid her second egg this afternoon at 4:38 PM. Is she a two-egg layer or a three-egg layer? We'll find out about four days from now. Based on what we know, we're looking for hatch on about April 5th...although hatch is a process and pip will begin a couple of days earlier. Congratulations to the happy eagle couple!

How to tell Mom Decorah and DM2 apart

Female eagles are generally larger than male eagles. The image below, courtesy of RRP, highlights some of the specific features to look for with this pair (clicks bigger).

1:55 pm Central time

The Decorah cam is now live - and it appears that the focus will be on the new pair who appeared to have adopted the Hatchery nest last year. They are being called HD (Hatchery Dad) and HM (Hatchery Mom) - and we'll be adding more info and hopefully some ID pics to the opening posts once we start seeing them more often.

Chat is open today from noon to 3 central time - and I will try to read through the posts in a little while to see what else I can learn.

The cam is showing a variety of scenes - not sure if they are panning or also switching from one cam to another; I expect we'll learn more soon.

Here's a nest shot

And a wider view (possibly of a different territory)

A tree in the distance - maybe another nest? Partly obscured by leaves in the wind.

They said the Hatchery pair was around, so with a bit of luck they may show up on the nest later today. I have unlocked the thread, and will lock the 2022 thread soon.
