.
Welcome To Season 2023-2024
To View This Season Coverage Click On the Link Below

HWF welcomes this cam which was set up by the zoo in Miami for its second season with us. This is quite an interesting nest in that the base is man-made. To me, it looks like a large TV satellite dish! I found a video that will tell you a little more about this nest. (and the guy from the zoo is so excited!! :D )

This bald eagle cam is a joint venture between these groups: Ron Magill Conservation Endowment, Wildlife Rescue of Dade County, and the Zoo Miami Foundation.

Cam Links

Two Cam views are available now (Sideview and Overhead), though at times there is only one available. Sound has also been added this season. Both views are only available on the YouTube Channel.

Chat is available 24/7 at the main cam (Sideview) on YouTube.

.I can't find much information other than the nest is in an undisclosed location near Miami.

I did find this article from the Miami Community News that fills in a little of the story.

https://communitynewspapers.com/kendall ... ld-eagles/

.This information is from Chat at Wildlife Rescue of Dade County Eagle Nest Cam~~~

* Rita is nearly 11 years old. If my estimate of her age at banding is good, she would have hatched in Jan 2011.
* Rita and her sibling were banded in Mar 2011
* Ron is not banded
* She and Ron have been a bonded pair since 2015-2016 season, to the best of my knowledge.

.The parents of this eaglet have been a bonded pair for over a decade. Unfortunately, they have had very limited success in raising chicks due in part to the instability of the nest site that they kept returning to year after year.

.There was some excitement surrounding the fledge of R2 last season. Here is the Story from our administrator, JudyB. Thank you!!

Folks on Chat said that R1 fledged around March 20 and R2 had a somewhat forced fledge a few days later, mentioning something about fishing line and a rescue. With that - and their suggestion that I try the Wildlife Rescue of Dade County facebook page (https://m.facebook.com/wildliferescuemiamidade/posts/), I found the rest of the story!

Older eaglet R1 fledged on March 21 at 8:03 am (79 days old). Link to the Facebook post and a video is here https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_ ... e=timeline-- (not posting a picture because we'd need their permission, and the link is there if anyone wants to watch the video).

Observers noticed late on March 25th that R2 seemed to be trying to fly (or at least do some branching) but was being held back by what appeared to be fishing line wrapped around one of the eaglet's legs (probably brought into the nest in a fish the adults delivered for food). The folks from Wildlife Rescue of Dade County got permission to go into the nest the next morning to free the eaglet - but as they approached in a ladder truck supplied by the local fire/rescue, R2 gathered all their strength and flew off, breaking the strong monofilament line in the process. Time of the unplanned fledge was 9:24 am on March 26 (83 days old) (link to post with video - https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_ ... 1374648667).

But that's not the end of the story. There was still quite a bit of monofilament line wrapped around her foot (they are using feminine pronouns, so I'll do that as well), and the folks from the Wildlife Rescue found her in the back yard of a house near the nest the evening of March 26, and were able to capture her. Happily they were able to remove all the line, and she had no serious injuries; they kept her overnight to make sure everything was stable, and the next day the firefighters returned with their truck and she was placed back in her nest - and happily she didn't panic and jump out again. She calmly watched them leave - and Mom Rita returned to the nest to check on her as soon as the equipment was back down on the ground (link to post with video - https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_ ... e=timeline).

It sounded as if it was at least several days before R2 tried flying again, but at this point, both are flying around, though they've been on the nest when I've checked while doing this research.

Hoping all the eagles and people involved have a much more peaceful remainder of the nesting season!

6.58.31Am-8.46.27Am

For Rita and Ron, this is their second season at this nest, and they appear to be much more relaxed getting the nest together. They are no longer in that move-in stage like the last season of not knowing what to do with this round object. LOL
Today they brought in countless sticks, a nice pine branch, and a dried-out plant (I lost count on the sticks). Unfortunately, some of those sticks that came in also went overboard by accident. Rita made sure to tell Ron who is the boss. Ron just shrugged it off and then went right back to work.

So far today we only had one visitor and that was Ron

* Ron flies onto the nest at 10.3615Am
* He does a bit of aerating the nest and moves a few sticks
* He looks around probably wondering where Rita is but she does not show
* 10.45.42Am Ron is off and I think looking for Rita
