Update On Rita

Wildlife Rescue of Dade County

Happy Valentine’s Day from Wildlife Rescue of Dade County and Marathon Wild Bird Center, Inc.
We can finally announce, after 16 months, where Rita the Bald Eagle is - and how you can visit her!
Ron and Rita lived together in the Miami-Dade area since 2015, and nested at this location during the 2019/20, 20/21 and 21/22 seasons. Sadly, in Nov 2022, at the start of the 22/23 season, Rita was found with a severe wing injury. She was taken to ZooMiami where she was operated on, and while she survived the wing injury, she will no longer be able to live in the wild. Her location was undisclosed since the operation for her own protection. While her fantastic new habitat was being built, rehabbers and a select few volunteers got her used to having people close by.
And now we can happily announce that as of 1730 today (5:30 pm), Valentine’s Day, Rita has officially started her journey as an educational ambassador for the bald eagle species at the Marathon Wild Bird Center in the Florida Keys. MWBC is a unique separate non-profit entity located within Crane Point Museums and Nature Center, Marathon, Florida.
There was a soft-introduction of Rita today as the Marathon Chamber of Commerce held its monthly after hours event at the Marathon Wild Bird Center's new facility. Ron Magill from the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment presented a check for $1000.00 in honor of Wildlife Rescue of Dade County to Marathon Wild Bird Center for what they have done for Rita.
There will be many more updates of Rita now that she has started her new role in life. She is receiving visitors at the Marathon Wild Bird Center located within the Crane Point Museums and Nature Center at 5550 Overseas Highway, Marathon, Florida. Please note: There is an admission charge, to enter the Crane Point Museums and Nature Center, that covers the upkeep of this 63-acre gem. Donations in honor of Rita/to help care for Rita need to be made directly to the Marathon Wild Bird Center.
We would like to thank the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment for covering the costs of Rita’s care during recovery, the veterinarians and staff at ZooMiami, our volunteers, and the staff and volunteers at Marathon Wild Bird Center. Your support helps all of us help the wildlife.
