Hi everyone! Someone asked me if the experts at HWF had any thoughts about V2's coloring, wondering if it might be a form of melanism (a condition where there's more than the usual amount of dark pigment). I sent some screenshots of him to David Hancock and Myles Lamont, and got this answer from Myles (who is also in British Columbia):
Judging by the tail colour, I would suggest these are just stained feathers. Depending on where the bird is foraging/bathing, the water bodies around parts of Florida I would imagine can be full of tannins and perhaps staining the feathers. We often have birds with discolored feathers up here too depending on what they get into. That would be my immediate guess. Nothing screams of melanism to me.
If V2 ends up staying here, it will be interesting to see if the color fades in time, or changes in other ways.
