Wildlife of Maine - 2022 + 2023 - Bald Eagle Cam

Post by JudyB » Fri Jul 08, 2022 8:55 am

Cam Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRjLyQ ... G5aMQJyMkQ then click on Eagle Cam (the direct link changes)

Maine is in the eastern time zone.

From the YouTube page for the nest:
- The Eagle nest is located on the Piscataquis River in Maine. The nest is 70 feet off the ground. The pair of eagles have used the nest since 2016 and have had eaglets each year. Only one year did they have 2 eaglets. The Mom's name is Sebeca and the Dad's name is Pisca after the 2 rivers that meet here, the Sebec and Piscataquis Rivers. The camera is located across the river from the nest 900 feet away.

The adult eagles generally stay in the area through the winter. (Some eagles in Maine do migrate south to where the water is a little less frozen.)

I believe this is the second year they have had two chicks, though I'm not sure about that.

The cam is courtesy of Wildlife of Maine, which has several other wildlife cams on the initial link above. There is a Chat on the YouTube page, but I have not found a website or Facebook page associated with their cams.

I have not been watching the cam, so the dates below are with big thanks to moderator MaineMoxie and the other chatters on YouTube, elfruler (https://www.elfruler.com/) whose website is an amazing resource, and various Facebook friends who know I'm from Maine and I watch a lot of eagle cams. I'm setting this thread up now because this is an interesting year for these eagles, there are still chicks on the nest, and it will easy to continue for next season.

2021-2022 Season:
  • adults return:
  • eggs laid: March 5; March 8
  • sad news: there was a bad snowstorm - and intruders in the area - on March 12, and the eagles abandoned the eggs
  • second clutch: March 30; April 2
  • hatched: May 6 (37 days); May 9 (37 days)
  • named: Milo-8, Milo-9 (Milo is the name of the town where the rivers meet)
  • branched: with thanks to MaineMoxie on Chat, one branched on July 17 and the other on July 18
  • fledged: July 23, 6:29 am (probably 78 days for the older eaglet, but maybe 75 days); July 27, 5:09 am (probably 79 days for younger eaglet, but maybe 82 days)
  • last seen: Milo-8, probably August 9 (95 days old, flying for 17 days); Milo-9, definitely August 27 (110 days old, flying for 31 days) (maybe seen on August 28)
2022-2023 Season:
  • adults return:
  • eggs laid: March 9 (because of the camera distance and angle, it's not easy to see when a second egg is laid; based on previous years, it's likely there are two)
  • hatched:
  • named: (next eaglet will be Milo-10) (Milo is the name of the town where the rivers meet)
  • branched:
  • fledged:
  • last seen:

A bit of general information about the nest.

Here's a map of the State of Maine, showing approximately where the nest is located (it clicks bigger):

Image

Two views of the nest area - nest is in the tree on the right in the first picture, and the group of four trees from the first picture are in the left part of the wider view.

There is also a beaver dam nearby, and the camera sometimes watches that when there's not much happening at the eagle nest.

Milo-8 is 65 days old; Milo-9 is 62 days old
(they are from a second clutch, so later than most eagles in Maine)

Here's one of them showing large wings at 12:15 pm today.

Not always easy to see (the cam is a long way from the nest), but there really are two - and they were both doing a bit of flapping, generally one at a time.

6:28 pm
An adult just dropped off food. I think the eaglet on the right is mantling the food.

The adult has flown off and it now looks as if the eaglet on the left is eating - not sure if they both got some, or if the one on the right was in submission.

6:35 pm
Hard to see through the branches, but it looks as if the one on the right is trying to move closer; the one on the left is continuing to eat.

I just checked chat - it looks as if there were two quick food drops, so likely that both had food - will look back.

Out of sequence - here's the adult after the first food drop; the eaglet in back has the food and is mantling.

Second adult lands on nest - and that's when the second eaglet (on left) got food.

I haven't looked in for a while - and today I found one was branching!

I checked with the folks on Chat, and they said both have been branching. The older one will be 11 weeks old tomorrow, and the other one is three days younger.
Thanks Judy and wonderful news :bravo:
