A view of the tree and the nest
EC tree and nest.jpg

The nest is located on private property which is a small working cattle ranch surrounded by swamp and marsh as well as large cattle ranches. It is near a large state park near the Myakka River in southwest Florida in rural East Sarasota County. There are excellent water and hunting resources which make this area highly adaptable for the eagles. The nest has been on the property for around 20 years. The local rancher has asked that the nest location remain anonymous to guard the privacy of the ranch and for the eagles.

Eagles inhabited the original nest on the property from 2001 – 2017. It was downed when the pine tree fell over during Hurricane Irma in the summer of 2017.Right after Hurricane Irma they began to build a new nest in a pine tree next to the one that fell. Unfortunately, that nest was blown out of the tree on December 21, 2018. What you see is the third nest built in the area.

Eagle Country is a live feed that streams online 24/7 during nesting season which in Florida lasts from Oct. 1 until about May.

This was the resident pair until last season when they disappeared. There is a new female but at the time the cams were turned off last spring she had not yet chosen a new mate from several who were vying for her attention. Hopefully we will see a new pair when the cams go live. :thumlft:

What did happen last season is that there were many visiting eagles as well as some territorial disputes. After several weeks, it became clear that there would not be a settled pair.

*******************************************************************************************

This was the new female and one of her suiters from last season. Weill she return? Will there be a new pair? Stay tuned!!

A little nest history ~~~

Sarasota County, FL--home of the nest
EC Sarasota County.jpg

Victoria & Nicholas had nested here since maybe 2001. We have no definitive way of knowing just how long Nic and Vic had been a pair since there have only bwwen cams for a couple years. However, we do know that eagles had been seen coming and going seasonally since the original nest was built in 2001.

Their original nest and the tree it was in blew down in Hurricane Irma after 16 years. They built a new nest in an adjacent tree. That nest, unfortunately, blew down in an unseasonable storm on 12.21.18. The nest that you see now the eagles rebuilt immediately in December 2018.

Rachel Simms, who handles administrative duties at Eagle Country is part of a small team of people who put in a lot of work to make Eagle Country a possibility. The prep work starts almost immediately after the eaglets fledge in order to get prepared for the next season. This includes digging trenches, laying conduit and running hundreds of feet of cable. It also means getting 60- or 70-foot lifts in order to get up in the trees. There are four different camera angles on the feed so that you can get a variety of perspectives while watching. (now 5)

An interesting story from the cam page. Copyright Eagle Country Bald Eagle Cam

(I have removed just a few lines)

Nicholas and Victoria in the nest ---
ECF Mom+Dad 12-1-18.jpg

Two Eagles, Two Storms and Two Choices

Victoria and Nicholas, two American bald eagles, have a story of hope in the midst of life’s storms, literally! These two eagles, whose nest has been in our family’s back pasture for over 17 years, have felt the fury of life’s storms, twice!

The first storm was Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm with winds topping 185 mph in some areas, which left a wake of destruction in its path. Homes were destroyed by the hundreds and millions were left without power. Nicholas and Victoria also felt the wrath of Irma as the storm toppled both their nest and the tree that was home. The storm destroyed their dwelling, but not their strength of heart.

When the nest toppled, they had a choice to make whether they would stay close or choose another location in which to build. We were overjoyed when we discovered they had started rebuilding in the tree next to their old nest, immediately! Their tenacity was a sight to behold and before the season was over, their new home was rebuilt and well established. We were so encouraged with their perseverance that we put up two LIVE nest cameras (during off season) to share their story with others. What a story it has been!

Fast forward to Friday, December 21, 2018, when an unnamed storm, unexpected and unseasonable, blew through our area with pounding rain and ferocious winds. Sadly, just a year and a half later, their nest was blown to the ground in pieces again.

I remember driving to our back pasture where I saw the fallen nest laying on the ground in pieces, and being devastated by what I saw. We had installed the cams to capture their majesty and continuing story.

That same day they made the choice and began rebuilding! But, even in the midst of their rebuilding, intruders came to drive them away. However, they stood their ground and fought for their place and rebuilt!

he cameras keep rolling and the adventures of Nic and Vic continue as their story unfolds.

This pair of eagles has been an inspiration to us all. Two eagles, two storms and two choices – their tenacity and courage have given us great hope in the midst of our own storms. Many folks have lost so much in these recent months to fire, hurricanes, sickness and tragedy. It is our prayer that the God-given instinct of Nicholas and Victoria to rebuild would encourage us all.

Thanks for reading,
Steve

Nothing too much going on--just Abby incubating her eggs. She still has those gray feathers that caused me to call her "dirty tail" last season. :grlol;
