"I was out for a beautiful sunrise this morning. When the sun made an appearance, I checked the Farm Lane to see if eagles were home. No sight nor sound from them. I filled the feeders and made a quick run around. I found a few great blue herons and some osprey. Not much else was stirring and I came home at 9 because it was heating up out there.
I just talked to Julie and she said one of the eagles (probably Elmo) was on the silo last evening. So, it does not appear he has abandoned the area altogether."

From Karen Lippy https://www.facebook.com/karen.lippy.9

"I have written poems for each of our young eagles. I used to be able to just sit down and write. I struggled with this one. Guess it is a sign of getting older.

Elmo and Anke

High in a tree way above ground
was a big stick nest. It was deep it was round.
On the rim of this nest was a tall young eagle
So handsome and fine it was almost illegal.
She knew it was time for her to fly.
She knew she could do it and win the sky.
She took a deep breath, then took the big leap
Her wings caught the air. She flew over the trees.
Anke was the first of the eagles to go
But Elmo was a just bit more slow.
While her sister flew over farm, fields and forest
Elmo was content to stay right in the nest.
It was familiar and comfy. Dad brought her her meals
Where else could she go to find such a good deal?
Just when we thought she never would leave,
she stepped to the rails and flew off with ease.
She joined her sister exploring the farm
the crows and blue jays threatened them harm.
The two young eagles soon learned to resist
The shouts and insults of these neighbor pests.
In the Family Tree, Elmo hogged the top
Anke sat below on the curved perch and thought
“What a pest my Sis has become!
I’ll fly to the silo where I’ll be alone.
On top of the silo I can see the whole world.
It’s just the perch for this eagle girl.”
Off Anke went to the top of the silo
to get away from sister Elmo.
Elmo saw right where she flew
And said, “Move over! I’m coming, too!”
Anke moved to the top of the barn.
Elmo did, too. Anke said, “DARN!”
Elmo ran along the ridge
Grabbed hold of the lightening rod and said, “Watch this!”
She swung around with a do-si-do.
“Watch me, Anke! Watch me go!”
Anke said, “You go to it! I’ll go back to the Family Tree!”
“Hey, Anke!” said Elmo. “Wait for me!”
“Is there anywhere I can go
That you don’t follow I’d like to know?”
It’s just follow the leader.
You lead. I follow. What could be better?
Don’t do what I do. Go play alone!”
Elmo said, “Let’s play Hide and Seek!
I’ll go hide and you look for me!”
“Ok,” said Anke. “I’ll count to five
while you go find a place to hide.”
Elmo flew to the field with the cows.
Anke can’t find me Elmo said with a smile.
Finally alone, Anke snoozed on a limb
While Elmo grew impatient for the games to begin.
Elmo moved from tree stump to post,
“I hid too well. Anke doesn’t know where to go.
I’ll make it easier for Anke to see me.”
Elmo flew to a house and hid by the chimney.
Anke was finally enjoying her day
Just snoozing and preening in the eagle way.
Elmo wondered just WHERE was that Anke?
She flew to the silo and there got her answer.
Anke was right where she left her, asleep in the tree.
“That bugger!! She never intended to play games with me!
I guess if I want to have fun
I’ll just have to do it all alone!.”
She went to the ground and ran round a bit
Then up to a wall and danced a jig.
It was a fine eagle dance that Elmo danced
Anke awoke and looked round with a glance.
At Elmo as she was stepping high,
Beak in the air and wings on the fly.
“Wow!” Said Anke, “That looks like fun.
Move over and I’ll show you how it’s done!”
“Fine!”, said Elmo, “Do what you please.
As for me, I think I’ll go
snooze in the Family Tree.”
Isn’t this like our very own chicks?
Who plague each other with similar tricks?
Who each want to do what they do when they want.
No matter. We love them in spite of their taunts."

2022 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

Hi everyone!

It's certainly been an unusual nesting season - but one thing remains the same:

We need your help so we can be prepared to see what happens next.

The first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!

Image

I may take a bit of a look back in another post - but now I'd like to look ahead to our plans and hopes for next year - and how you can help us get there. :thumlft:

While we all miss Dad Trooper at Delta 2, I'm looking forward to watching Ma Delta teach DM (Delta Male) how to be a good mate and with luck a good dad to the little chicks we hope to see them raise together in the new nest we'll be building for them, with big thanks to everyone who donated to our GoFundMe drive.

The French Creek eagles raised two chicks in 2022 - though they didn't use the nest with the cam and, even if they had, the cam went offline before the nesting season got underway. Ever the optimist, I'm hoping we'll be able to get the cam streaming again, and at the very least see the adults and maybe next year's fledglings visit the nest with a cam - and just maybe they'll decide it's time for a change and move to the nest with the cam!

Mom Dimple and Dad Duffer finally produced eggs in 2022 after three years together at Harrison Mills, but were disrupted by an intruder during the incubation. I really want to see them raising little chicks next year - and I think it will happen, and very much hope that we'll be able to replace the cams that are no longer working so we'll be able to see them raise their first chicks together.

A young pair of eagles took over the Surrey Reserve nest for the 2022 season, and weren't ready to nest then, but I think they are now - and we're looking forward to watching SM and SF (Surrey Male and Surrey Female) learn how to raise the tiny chicks we hope they will have. This is the only nest that doesn't need major work - but it would be nice to get the cams cleaned - and to do the preventive maintenance needed to make sure they keep working.

The White Rock pair had a sad year in 2022, losing their chicks when they were a little more than six weeks old - and I'm hoping we'll be able to see them come back with another successful season (they've successfully fledged 14 young eagles so far). One of the cameras at the nest they appear to be preparing for next year is in danger of falling after one of the straps holding it broke, so we are hoping to be able to fix that quickly.

Image

The screenshot above is Ma Delta feeding her tiny eaglets in 2019 - and I would love to have five pictures like this, one from each of our nests, at this time next year.

Naturally, the eagles will have a say in that - but we need to get functioning cams securely fastened at as many nests as possible in the month or so while the eagles are generally away in search of salmon.

We'll be posting additional information about the work we'd like to do at the various nests soon, but we really do need donations now so we can start reserving lifts and scheduling climbers and hopefully buying a few new cams. And remember - the first $1000 in donations will be matched - so if you adopt a nest for $250, HWF will receive $500!

We've tried to answer some of the common questions about donating here - All About Donating - and please feel free to PM me if you have other questions or concerns.
