Tragedy going in Nancy and Harry's nest.
The male has been missing for 4 days, now, and many intruders are around.
Worst now, the older eaglet E1 is trying to get rid of his young sibling E2 . Lots of pecks in the head, the neck and this morning it almost succeeded in ejecting it from the nest...
I don't even know what good news I might have to tell you tomorrow. Apart from certainly a very bad one...
There remains only prayers and plenty of food to put an end to the calvary of the youngest

E2 did fall from the nest. Someone from the DNR went and found him and apparently it survived. Here is a post from the FB page.

I went back on the DVR and found this----
Here is the battle on the edge. It looked like E1 was backing E2 up to the edge mostly using it's wings and finally---over went E2. Not a lot of violence but a lot of pushing and shoving. Nancy was in the tree in the upper right. When E1 turned around---there was just one! Nancy is gone from the nest right now---hope she is hunting.

VERY sad, bad news for little E2
.Minnesota Nongame Wildlife Program----
·
This afternoon at about 1:00, at the EagleCam nest, the younger chick was pushed out of the nest by its sibling. Nongame staff were contacted and retrieved the chick from the ground as soon as we were made aware of the incident. The nest is roughly 75 feet high.
The young eagle was able to be quickly brought to the veterinarians at The Raptor Center for care. On arrival, the young bird was quiet and got increasing lethargic throughout the exam. A wound was found on it’s head and it had increased effort to breathe. Throughout the exam, it’s breathing got more labored, most likely a result from internal trauma. Blood was noted coming from the nares (nostrils) of the bird.
It had a fracture of the humerus very close to the joint in it’s left wing that impacted the growth plate area. With this kind of fracture, there is not an option to repair it surgically and it cannot be left alone to heal as the bone would heal in a way that would cause chronic problems and pain for the bird.
Because of the very poor prognosis due to the complex fracture and severely progressing signs of internal trauma, the young bird was humanely euthanized to alleviate suffering.
Nongame would like to thank Thomas Demma, The Raptor Center staff, USFWS, and to Conservation Officer Tetrault for their lightening fast assistance. It is at least comforting to know the chick didn't have to suffer with it's injuries for a long time. Please be kind in your comments, we are all very sad about this outcome.

Thank you for the update, Mary - definitely not the news I wanted to hear, but, like you, I'm happy that the brave little eaglet is no longer suffering, and its bold spirit is flying free.

RIP little E2
Your ordeal is over now. No more suffering and fear of savagery. During your last hours you have known tranquility and peace of mind despite the benevolent presence of the humans around you. I hope that the sacrifice of your life will allow your eldest to survive. it had nothing against you, you know, it was just trying to preserve his own life.

So sad. I thought the same thing was going to happen last year ( or was it year before) when there was a new Dad and a VERY aggressive oldest eaglet? RIP E2 ; no more pain and aggression directed at you.

Summary of 2022 Nesting Season
Summary of 2022 Nesting Season
Everything started out great for Nancy and Harry. They produced two eggs again in their second year together, both of them hatched - and then Harry disappeared when the chicks were about a month old. Nancy did a great job of keeping the chicks warm and protected from intruders, and tried very hard to keep them fed, but unfortunately there was a lot of rivalry, and older eaglet E1, following the instinct to survive, pushed the younger chick off the nest four days after Harry disappear. E2 survived the fall and was quickly rescued, but it's a tall tree and the eaglet was badly injured, so the decision was made to humanely euthanize the youngster. I think we all held our breath a bit for a few weeks until E1 was old and big enough to be safe on the nest alone, and after that things went more smoothly, with Nancy doing a great job raising the eaglet. E1 was banded, and based on her size, they believe she is female. The Facebook group that follows this nest named her Harriet, in honor of Harry. She fledged successfully, and spent another month in the area, learning to be an eagle. Harriet was last seen on July 28, and the cam was turned off for the season around August 25.
We wish Harriet a great life, and hope that next year will be happier here.

2023 Nesting Season Starts Here
I've read that the camera should be back on around November 17th.
And some good news - the local observers who post on the Friends of Minnesota Nongame Eagle Cam Facebook page report that Nancy has chosen a new mate!
With big thanks to Bonnie Johnson for permission to post her photo here - meet Nancy and her new mate Beau!
(used with permission, all rights reserved)
Bonnie notes that Beau brings to mind a rainbow, which "is a sign of hope, the beauty after the storm, and a sign of good fortune." You can read her post here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/2275572 ... 273135063/.
I'm looking forward to meeting Beau when the camera comes back on - and wishing them both (and all who follow this nest) a wonderful year!
