Looking to break some records over the next few days with a very deep, record-level low-pressure system taking shape off the west coast. This system has tapped into remnant moisture from a cycle out near Japan bringing together all the ingredients for a strong atmospheric river event pointed at central and northern California where up to a foot of rain is possible in a few locations. The plume of moisture will slowly drop southward today into Monday, arriving in our area around midday tomorrow bringing widespread measurable rainfall with, unfortunately, little in the way of snow. Overall, looking at a pretty nice day out there today, the calm before the storm under partly cloudy skies as highs reach the 60's. Breezy by afternoon with southwest winds developing 10-20mph, becoming gusty at times. Clouds and winds will increase further tonight with showers developing tomorrow. The main band of precipitation should arrive in our area by around midday Monday with rain likely through the afternoon and evening. Colder & windy with a high near 50° tomorrow, west-southwest winds also gusting as high as 40mph, stronger over ridgetops and along the desert slopes. Due to the warmer tropical feed into this system, the bulk of the precip. should fall as rain with the snow level above about 9,000 feet, where around 0.25-0.75 inches of rain can be expected, with locally 1-2" on the lower coastal slopes/Rim Communities. Colder air will filter in behind the front Monday evening with even a few snow showers possible Monday night, accumulations if any will remain light. However, as the colder arrives with possible snow and wet roadways, it could be enough to make for icy conditions by Tuesday morning. If planning travel in the mountains, it is time to start packing the chains as weather conditions can and will change rapidly in the mountains. Fair and warmer weather will return by the middle of the week with near-normal temperatures and dry weather through next weekend.
