A Little History

Posts with a detailed history of the Redding Eagles from 2007-2017 start here - viewtopic.php?f=44&t=86&p=636#p637

Brief history from October 2018 - viewtopic.php?f=44&t=334#p107635

2019 and 2020 Nesting Seasons (link)
  • 2019 was another year of changes; Liberty and Spirit returned as usual in the fall - and chose the old hawk's nest at the Riverview golf course for their nest. Male Spirit disappeared during the winter; he was last seen with Liberty on the Christmas Tree on January 26, 2019. As of February 11, Liberty was being seen consistently with a sub adult - and on February 12 their nest came down in a record-breaking snowstorm. Happily both eagles were fine, the pair did not lay eggs this year. On March 26, the new male was named Guardian.
  • 2020 was a bit more normal; the adults were seen back in the area on September 25, and they moved back to Turtle Bay and the nest Liberty and her first mate Patriot built in 2011. The cams that had covered that nest were no longer working, but our wonderful local observers reported that Liberty and Guardian were acting as if they had eggs on February 12, and as if there might be a chick on March 22. They finally saw an eaglet on April 10 - and saw a second eaglet on April 12, but sadly didn't see the younger one again. The remaining eaglet was named Hope, fledged successfully on June 17, and remained in the area with her parents until mid-July. Hope was Guardian's first fledgling and Liberty's 22nd.
2021 Nesting Season (link)
  • A new camera was installed at the Turtle Bay nest for the 2021 nesting season (big thanks to Terri/Eaglewoman and the Friends of the Redding Eagles!) - and happily the eagles chose to use that nest! They laid three eggs in mid-February, and the three eaglets hatched March 21, 22 and 24. They were named Honor, Glory and Rebel by a poll of viewers. All three fledged successfully, if a bit non-traditionally. It was very hot in late May/early June as the eaglets turned 10 weeks old, frequently going above 100F/38C. Oldest eaglet Honor (who had never branched) had a very intentional fledge on June 3rd (74 days old). The following day, youngest eaglet Rebel left the nest as well, possibly slipping while trying to branch (the angle of the cam made it hard to be sure); Rebel was 72 days old. Happily local observers found both of them on the ground with an adult perched above; they landed near the river, and were able to have a drink of water. Middle eaglet Glory apparently liked having the nest all to his/her self, staying there another two weeks before fledging on June 18 (88 days old). All three fledglings were seen together perched beside the river on June 22, and all were seen through July 5. Both adults and two fledglings were seen in the area July 18, and one fledgling was around a few days later (it might be Honor who left first, but not sure). A happy year in spite of the challenges of the very hot weather.

Let the Eagle Season Begin!!!!
We have our 1st sighting of an Eagle on the Christmas Tree Wednesday morning by Kathleen Downs! That is Liberty's favorite spot on east side of the Christmas Tree so that would be my guess!
So keep your eyes peeled!
The good news is that our eagles don't generally spend time in the Nest quite yet, but we will get that new Eaglecam running soon in case they pop in for a visit! With temps still in the 90's here this week I wouldn't expect them to be in that hot nest!
Thanks so much Kathleen!

Okay it's official folks!!!
Our beautiful Mama Liberty is baaaaaccck!!!
I can't tell you what a relief it is to see her again! Each year for the last 17 years we have held our collective breath & waited anxiously for her return!
And, then one day out of the blue, there she is in all her glory!
Oh how very lucky we all are to have this very special eagle in our presence in Redding for the last 17 years!
Here's to another exciting chapter in the life of our Marvelous Miss Liberty! Who knows what surprises she has in store for us this year? I don't know how she can possibly top last season with their 3 incredibly wonderful eaglets Honor, Glory & Rebel?!?
We shall wait & see!

Update on our new Eaglecam:
In case you didn't hear this news, Dan & Joe discovered through troubleshooting that we have a bad Router at the Sheraton end of our Eaglecam equipment. So that is why you are getting a black screen or an Error message on our youtube channel right now.
Joe is currently configuring a new Router for our Equipment & he will be shipping that to us asap! Dan will install it for us in the Sheraton/Mosaic Eaglecam Equipment Room & then we should be good to go! We can't wait to get a look at our new Cam & IR light!
Thank you one & all for your generosity & support! We wouldn't be able to do our yearly maintenance, upgrades & pay our monthly Spectrum Internet Fees without ALL of you!
We will let you know as soon as our Eaglecam is running!
Meanwhile our Ground Crew(Terri, Mike & Sue) will be out & about keeping our eyes peeled for any more sightings of our beloved Redding Eagles! We will share our pics & videos here on the fb page for you!
Thanks for your patience & understanding!
~Terri

You may have heard that there is a Fire burning right now about 10 miles North of Redding. It called the Fawn Fire and it has burned 5,850 acres and is currently 10% contained.
Several people have been asking about our Redding Eagles & their Nest Area at Turtle Bay so we wanted to reassure you that the Fire is 10 miles north of the Nest Area and there are 1,000 Firefighters & Fire Support Crews & Tankers working hard on this Fire as it continues to threaten 9,000 Structures in that area.
Liberty can easily fly south or west from the Turtle Bay Nest Area to escape the smoke conditions we are having from the Fire. The eagles are not locked into their nest at this time of the season and do often spend time in different parts of their Nesting Territory until it gets closer to egg laying time in February.
Right now our concern is for all of the people & wildlife who live in the area of the Fawn Fire 🙁 Our hearts go out to all of you & we will keep you in our thoughts & prayers.
Thank you to ALL of our INCREDIBLE Firefighters & their Support Staff for putting your lives on the line to keep all of us ALL safe!

Great news to report tonite!
Mike spotted our Papa Guardian perched on the Family Tree at 4:50 pm today!!!!
Guardian was in his usual hunting spot above the river when I got there around 6pm.
That means both of our Redding Eagles have returned!!!!!!
The 2021-2022 Nesting Season has officially begun!!!
The eagles don’t usually spend a lot of time in the Nest when they first return. They usually spend time perched near the Nest to “take a stand” & let other eagles know that this territory is taken!
Can’t wait to find Liberty & Guardian together!

Great news Terri; can’t wait until the new router is installed and we can watch the nest just in case one or both come to check it out.

Update on our New Eaglecam:
I just got word from Joe that the Router will be here in Redding on Thursday! Once it comes in, Dan will let me know when he can go install it over in the Sheraton Mosaic Room & then we should be good to go! We will let you know as soon as our new Cam is up & running for the Season!
We haven't had any recent sightings of Liberty or Guardian these last few days, but we are actively out there looking for them!
It is normal for the eagles to not spend a lot of time in the Nest Area when they first return to the Nesting Territory. Their territory spans from south of Keswick Dam all the way down to the Bonnyview Rd. Bridge. So the eagles have lots of places to look for food & hang at this time of year!
We are starting to see some large Chinook Salmon spawning in the river below the Highway 44 Bridge, so once they spawn & then die some will wash up on the gravel bars & those will be an excellent food source for our eagles & other wildlife in the area!
Keep your eyes peeled & please report here on our FB page if you see any eagles in the Turtle Bay or Riverview Golf Course area or along the Sacramento River in Redding.
Thank you for your continued patience & understanding!
