1050 E20 flies off leaning palm going northwest, then turns and goes toward the nest tree.

1051 E20 looking around and watching the skies

1051 A littl vocalization

....then turns east...

then south and soaring the skies.

1243 E20 drops from the northwest and flies around the nest tree.

1243 E20 with a brief stop on the church snag then to nest.

1250 E20 on veranda

1259 E20 rousing

1305 E20 flew around the pasture and headed toward the ne side of office oak

...then to leaning palm

1350 E20 leaves and flies at another bird that flew in from the north low by the pond.
The visiting bird flew east and E20 to pond edge again.

1357 E20 went to leaning palm and Happy Appy takes another dip.

OK question !! Is a rouse involuntary reaction vs a shake which is voluntary ?? Rouse seems to me, could be kind of compared to goosebumps, that pop up on a humans arm. You can always see when the eagle is about to rouse. (I always talk to my camera and say, here it comes). The feathers start to stand. They plump all up and out...then the rouse.
Anybody know ?

*** good question lovinnature. I have asked that before. To me it seems like an autonomic nervous system function, but I think I was told that the eagles are able to control their rousing. It sure just comes out of nowhere. I love to watch the process. They are supposedly very relaxed and comfortable in their environment when this happens. I will check my resources. But maybe Journi or MaryF knows.

From 2003 Avian Care Manual pg 42 “Birds … .perform an action known as rousing when they erect their feathers and shake vigorously.” I think this suggests it’s voluntary. Please, JudyB, is this appropriate for here, or do we need to take Q&A to the chatter page?

Purely voluntary, lovinnature. You never see an eagle rouse during flight or during a heraldic pose.

Raising their hackles, however, is involuntary, a natural reaction to adverse events; e.g., having their talons trodden by a recalcitrant mate when remodeling the nest, or some such palaver.

Monday's are made for getting things done. E20 does just that, starting the day trying to catch a fish or duck. E20 will spend time in the nest tree, preening and watching the area. One of the adults flies into the pond area; however, E20 does not fly there. E20 moves to the treetop branch, watching to the S. E20 leaves the nest tree and soars beautifully to the S, drifting out of view to the SE. Cam1/Cam2/Cam3. Time stamps provided.
