gretchen_AEF — 10:14 EAGLE 101: WHY ARE EAGLES SO ATTACHED TO THEIR NEST SITE?
One of the more fascinating behavioral aspects of Bald Eagles is what we refer to as "nest site fidelity", that strong connection they have with their physical nest and its location. They return annually to the nest and add to it and improve it. The connection is even stronger than their bond to their mate! And while eagles are certainly not alone in this behavior, it is interesting to consider when so many other types of birds and animals move around year to year. So what is behind their nest connection?
The answer: Location. Location. Location.
Eagle life is hard. They have to hunt and scavenge for food, and then defend that food from other eagles to boot! Natural mortality rates for their offspring are high - only 50% of eaglets survive their first year; only 20% reach adulthood. Because life is hard, they want every advantage they can get, especially for their young. When they find a good, strong tree and ideal habitat with lots of food, they aren't about to give it up, and that makes perfect sense. We humans aren't all that different in this regard.
And so it goes. Each nesting season the pair return to the nest site. They'll go through all the courtship rituals and likely pair up again, but if not, one of the two will stay at the nest with their new mate. They will add to the nest and raise the young. Due to this continual building season after season, nests can grow very large and eventually either blow down in a storm or the tree branches will collapse under the weight. Destruction of a nest during nesting season is traumatic and often results in site abandonment by that pair. However, a good location will likely see new tenants move it and start their own nest. There you have it! Real estate is important to eagles just like humans. (National Eagle Center)
