Florida Eagle Country BE cam-2020/21

Post by MaryF » Sun Oct 18, 2020 11:14 am

HWF welcomes this new bald eagle cam to it's ever growing list of cams for it's second year of coverage here!! :hi:

A view of the tree and the nest
EC tree and nest.jpg

The nest is located on private property which is also a small working cattle ranch near a large state park near the Myakka River in southwest Florida in rural East Sarasota County. The nest has been on the property for around 20 years. The local rancher has asked that the nest location remain anonymous to guard the privacy of the ranch and for the eagles.

Eagle Country is a live feed that streams online 24/7 during nesting season which in Florida lasts from Oct. 1 until about May.

A little nest history ~~~

Sarasota County, FL--home of the nest
EC Sarasota County.jpg

Victoria & Nicholas – also affectionately known as Vic & Nic have nested here since 2001.

Their original nest and the tree it was in blew down in Hurricane Irma after 16 years. They built a new nest in an adjacent tree. That nest, unfortunately, blew down in an unseasonable storm on 12.21.18. The nest that you see now the eagles rebuilt immediately in December 2018.

We have no definitive way of knowing how long Nic and Vic have been a pair since we have only had cams for a couple years. However, we do know that we have consistently seen eagles come and go seasonally since the original nest was built in 2001.

Rachel Simms, who handles administrative duties at Eagle Country is part of a small team of people who put in a lot of work to make Eagle Country a possibility. The prep work, she said, starts almost immediately after the eaglets fledge in order to get prepared for the next season. This includes digging trenches, laying conduit and running hundreds of feet of cable. It also means getting 60- or 70-foot lifts in order to get up in the trees. There are four different camera angles on the feed so that you can get a variety of perspectives while watching. (now 5)

How can you tell Nic+Vic apart?

Victoria---courtesy of Eagle Country
EC Victoria.jpg
It can be hard to figure out who is who!

Victoria is larger than Nicholas.

On the left side of Nicholas’ beak there is a slight “dent” or marking that is particular to him. It is seen best when the camera is up close.

Victoria has a lighter brown/tan coloring on the tips of her white tail feathers.

Nicholas has darker coloring right around his eyes.

An interesting story from the cam page. Copyright Eagle Country Bald Eagle Cam

(I have removed just a few lines)

Nic and Vic in the nest ---
ECF Mom+Dad 12-1-18.jpg

Two Eagles, Two Storms and Two Choices

Victoria and Nicholas, two American bald eagles, have a story of hope in the midst of life’s storms, literally! These two eagles, whose nest has been in our family’s back pasture for over 17 years, have felt the fury of life’s storms, twice!

The first storm was Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm with winds topping 185 mph in some areas, which left a wake of destruction in its path. Homes were destroyed by the hundreds and millions were left without power. Nicholas and Victoria also felt the wrath of Irma as the storm toppled both their nest and the tree that was home. The storm destroyed their dwelling, but not their strength of heart.

When the nest toppled, they had a choice to make whether they would stay close or choose another location in which to build. We were overjoyed when we discovered they had started rebuilding in the tree next to their old nest, immediately! Their tenacity was a sight to behold and before the season was over, their new home was rebuilt and well established. We were so encouraged with their perseverance that we put up two LIVE nest cameras (during off season) to share their story with others. What a story it has been!

Fast forward to Friday, December 21, 2018, when an unnamed storm, unexpected and unseasonable, blew through our area with pounding rain and ferocious winds. Sadly, just a year and a half later, their nest was blown to the ground in pieces again.

I remember driving to our back pasture where I saw the fallen nest laying on the ground in pieces, and being devastated by what I saw. We had installed the cams to capture their majesty and continuing story.

That same day they made the choice and began rebuilding! But, even in the midst of their rebuilding, intruders came to drive them away. However, they stood their ground and fought for their place and rebuilt!

The cameras keep rolling and the adventures of Nic and Vic continue as their story unfolds.

This pair of eagles has been an inspiration to us all. Two eagles, two storms and two choices – their tenacity and courage have given us great hope in the midst of our own storms. Many folks have lost so much in these recent months to fire, hurricanes, sickness and tragedy. It is our prayer that the God-given instinct of Nicholas and Victoria to rebuild would encourage us all.

Thanks for reading,

I checked in this afternoon and found 2 beautiful eagles in the nest and tree. I sure didn't know who they were and the mods did not seem to either. Definitely not Nic and Vic.
