Berry College 2020-2021 Nest Thread

Post by IrishEyes » Sun Aug 16, 2020 7:13 pm

Welcome everyone to year 8 of Berry College Eagles :hi: .

This Nest is in Eastern Time Zone

A huge thank you to HWF for featuring this cam on your website :ty:

Berry College’s bald eagle couple first appeared on the main campus in the spring of 2012. Since that time, they have continued to nest in the top of a tall pine tree situated between the main entrance and the parking lot of the Steven J. Cage Athletic and Recreation Center.
It is believed that the bald eagles remain in the area during the summer months and do not migrate as there is plentiful food available from lakes, the Berry quarry and the nearby Oostanaula River. They have occasionally been sighted at or near the nest during the summer, probably to ensure that other animals know it is occupied.

Thank you Mary F for bringing this nest to our attention and to HWF for featuring these cams on their website :)

We use Chatroll instead of Livestream to promote conversation around the eagles. Anyone can see chat - You will, however, need to create a free Chatroll account or use Facebook or Twitter to contribute to the conversation. We know that change can be tough, but this tool should enhance the user experience for all and provide us with better monitoring and filtering options.

Definitions.. Bev / Irish Eyes
Incubate
'(of a bird) sit on (eggs) in order to keep them warm and bring them to hatching

Brooding
This is a term which means keeping chicks warm and comfortable. When your baby chicks arrive they will need special care. This is the time when you can expect a few chicks to die

The brooding period is the time between when the chicks are hatched until they can be on their own without any heat.

18 décembre, 21:07 · Hello I posted these pictures to Guntersville Bald Eagle photography page.
Several people suggested this may be the eagle that yall have been monitoring.
I saw her this morning around 9:40 am Friday 12-18-2020 on Sunset Drive in Guntersville, AL.
She came around the Kiwanas pier from north 431 flying southbound down sunset drive toward hwy 69.
I dont know where she went from there I lost her in the trees.

GENDER: The male eagle is smaller and has a sleek white head. The female eagle is larger with a head of ruffled white feathers.

INJURY: The female eagle returned to the nest in 2013 with an injured left leg/foot. We do not know how it happened and it does not hamper her although she will show evidence of her injury for the rest of her life.

As a courtesy to viewers with slower internet connections, please limit the pictures in each post to no more than a total of 150,000 bytes (150KB), and please do not post animations (though it's fine to post a link to them). To avoid horizontal scrolling, please do not post pictures that are more than 500 pixels wide - though it's fine to post a 500-pixel-wide thumbnail that clicks to a much larger . The forum attachment software conveniently handles that task - so you can attach larger pictures, and a properly-sized clickable image will appear in your post. The preferred format for pictures is JPEG (.jpg), and three 500-pixel-wide JPEGs should be under the 150KB limit...

EGG STAYS with thanks to Berry Eagles

In 2013, two eggs hatched (B1 and B2.) B1 fledged on April 22 and B2 fledged on April 28.
In 2014, two eggs were laid, but only one (B3) hatched on Feb. 22. B3 fledged on May 22, 2014.
In 2015, eggs were laid on Jan. 6 and 9 with hatching on Feb. 13 and 15. B4 fledged on May 10, 2014, and B5 fledged on May 12, 2015.
In 2016, eggs were laid Jan. 7 and 10 and hatched Feb. 14 and 15. B6 and B7 fledged May 8 and 9, 2016.
In 2017, eggs were laid Jan. 3 and 7 and hatched Feb. 11 and 13. B8 and B9 fledged on May 5, 2017 and May 10, 2017.
In 2018, eggs were laid Jan. 3 and 6 and hatched Feb. 12 and 13. On Feb. 22, 2018, one of the two eaglets wandered over to the edge of the nest and fell out of the 100-foot-tall pine tree. It did not survive the fall. The remaining eaglet fledged on May 9.
In 2019, eggs were laid Jan. 8 and 11 and hatched Feb. 19 and 21. The eaglets died shortly thereafter. No cause was determined.
In 2020, eggs were laid Jan. 11 and 13. Neither egg hatched.

STADIUM: Before the eagles, Berry officials had planned to build a stadium in the area. Once the eagles arrived, the stadium site was moved to the south. In May 2014, Berry officials announced that the stadium would be relocated even further south out of respect for the eagles and their habitat.

DIET: The eagles enjoy eating fish, coot (waterfowl) and squirrel. The nest is conveniently located near the Oostanaula River, the renamed Eagle Lake at Berry and Garden Lakes in Rome, Ga

HELP: If an eaglet falls out of the nest or any of the eagles become injured, college officials are required to contact authorities regarding the federal rules for handling bald eagles. No personnel are permitted in the restricted area during nesting season. Any intervention or care for eagles will be determined by federal authorities.
