History

Background information courtesy of the Port Tobacco River Conservancy:

I believe the cam was installed for the 2019 nesting season. The pair fledged two chicks in each of the two previous years (2017 and 2018); in 2019 they laid three eggs, two of which hatched, and PT1 and PT2 fledged successfully.

February 3, 2020

Hi everyone! This is a new nest to me, though they did have a cam last year - and I discovered that they laid their first egg of the season earlier today, at 4:20 pm (eastern time)!

I believe this is Hope, the female, giving us a peek at her egg, from 5:34 pm:

This is from 5:46, and it's sort of a family picture, but the cam operator was getting a closer look at the egg, so we only saw the feet of Hope leaving and male Chandler arriving to take over for a little while. Chandler is on the left, and moved in to incubate shortly after Hope left.

I would expect Hope to return before it's fully dark to take the overnight shift - but this cam doesn't have night vision, so it's hard to know.

Second egg (we think) at 3:32 pm - she looked very pouffy!

:vid: Second Egg at Port Tobacco (3 minutes)

I wasn't watching when she laid the egg, but started watching a few minutes later - and thought she'd laid it at 3:41 pm.

I have no idea what she was doing, but I recorded it, so maybe someone can tell me what's going on here!

Added -
I just added the video of the actual egg laying (the cam has dvr) - and it's now 5:24 pm nest time, and Mom Hope still hasn't shown us the eggs - it's still raining there, and keeping things dry is her priority.

Good morning, everyone!

There was indeed a second egg, though it wasn't seen until this morning (the cam doesn't have night vision - and was offline part of the time because of the storm there).
20200207_002.jpg

As of 12:12 pm (good afternoon!), the eggs are alone, partly hidden from us by moisture on the cam.
20200207_004.jpg

The pair laid three eggs last year, so it's not unusual to leave them uncovered for a bit to slow development.

And it looks as if a large branch just moved over the eggs.
20200207_005.jpg

And one of the adults was there immediately to move it off the eggs.
20200207_006.jpg

She or he then settled down to incubate.

The second adult just arrived with something (big leaf??) and decided the best place for it was on the first adult.
20200207_007.jpg

The second adult did move the stick further off the nest bowl (and the first adult got out of the way during that), then the second adult flew off, and the first returned to incubating.

This was a shift change - I don't watch this cam enough to be sure who is who, but my guess is that the male arrived and is taking a turn on the eggs.

Still only two eggs.
20200209_013.jpg

Hope is back now, incubating the eggs - so we'll see if anything happens before dark. If there's a third egg, this is the most likely day - though it could be tomorrow or (much less common) even later.

There are now three eggs, and the third was most likely laid after dark yesterday evening, though it could have been any time before 7:02 am, when we first saw the third egg (from the dvr):

Saturday, March 14

It's been a while since I checked in - and there's a chick! Unfortunately they also have an egg that failed to complete its hatch; the chat moderators appear to be saying that it's the first egg that hatched and the second that failed, so I'll go with that.

This is from 7:30 am today, day 40 for #1 and day 37 for #2; the egg that is hatching is on the right, and you can see that the other one looks to be collapsing more than hatching, though there is sadly a near-term chick inside.
20200314_012.jpg

This is 8:37 am - I saw someone say that's when the hatch occurred - and it's very close; I haven't seen an official time given.
20200314_013.jpg

These are 8:41 and 8:42 am - definitely out at this point.
20200314_014.jpg
20200314_015.jpg

I apologize for the extra picture - only two in the next post.

Continuing the story, here's tiny PT3 sleeping at 11:04 am after the hard work of hatching.
20200314_010.jpg

And here's a feeding from 1:56 pm; I understand the tiny one has been feed several times today.
20200314_011.jpg

Today is day 34 for the remaining egg, so with a bit of luck, there will be another chick tomorrow or the next day.

Hope & Chandler returned to the area and were first spotted on the cam in October 2019.
Eggs were laid: February 3, 6, and 9, 2020
Egg 1 failed to hatch
Egg 2 (PT3)

Fledged: June 4, 2020
Egg 3 (PT4)
Hatched: March 16, 2020
Fledged: June 5, 2020

We've come to the end of another successful nesting season for Hope and Chandler with 2 strong fledglings. We may continue to see them on our live stream for a few more weeks while food is being provided at the nest. They are learning to hunt and are practicing their flying while still in this area.

Enjoy the last few glimpses of them on camera and perhaps you may also see them flying around when you visit the park. While our camera continues to stream you may catch a few visitors at the nest, we want to thank you for joining us. We look forward to chatting with you again next seas

Season 2020-2021 was an unsuccessful season for Hope and Chandler. Though two eggs were laid one one chick was not able to hatch successfully and the second egg did not hatch at all.
