Update For 2019/2020 season - it looks as if the eagles are not going to use the nest with the cams - but a pair of great horned owls may use it! We are seeing eagles on the Osprey Cam, so I think the thread is staying in the eagle area for now.

(Their original cam was one of the first ones I watched after Hornby and Sidney - happy to see them back online, though it is a different nest and almost certainly a different pair.)

Good morning Bev
December 11 - For those who missed our earlier announcement, the new Friends of Blackwater Eagle Cams are now live! We're in a new tree with two streaming video/audio cams pointed at the nest. Last year the nest saw two eaglets fledge, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that the couple will return for a new season.

Hi folks!

Well, I'd planned to spend some time watching the cam before now, but December got busy, and today was the first day I looked at the cams since setting up the thread. And this is what I saw, at 5:15 pm:

It took me a moment to realize what I was seeing, but I knew immediately that it was not a bald eagle. I checked the Friends of Blackwater NWR Facebook page and discovered that since they installed the cams in November, they have only seen the female a couple of times, and haven't seen the male at all; as of December 30, the female was last seen on the nest on December 27.

And, again courtesy of Friends of Blackwater, while the eagles have been away, a pair of Great Horned Owls have been visiting the nest. They apparently lay their eggs in January or February - and as we have seen at other nests, they generally take over nests built by other birds - so if the eagles decided to switch to another nest, we may get to watch a pair of owls.

Here's a picture of today's visitor from the other cam - it was also taken at 5:15 so I think the time stamp is off.

The other day on the Blackwater Osprey Cam, in just one hour, we saw two mating Bald Eagles, crows, adult and juvie Turkey Vultures, and a visit from an immature Bald Eagle. What usually happens is the eagles bring in food, then a variety of other birds arrive to finish off the remains of the meal. It makes for an interesting parade of birds. You can see the cam live on our website:
