The Pritchetts have had a bucket truck go up to retrieve the remains of E14. They will be taken to CROW for a necropsy. The egg was also removed from the nest and the nest was checked for harmful things. :brknhrt:
Thank you for the update, Mary - and thanks to the Pritchetts and CROW. I had been worried that the fish hook could harm one of the adults, and am glad that is no longer a cause for concern.

We have the report from CROW already ---

CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.

Update on E14 passing:
This afternoon, a CROW staff member removed the remains from the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam nest and brought them to the #CROWClinic. The unhatched egg was also removed from the nest.
A radiograph was taken of the body which did not reveal any foreign objects, such as a fishing hook, in the body of E14 and the staff member that retrieved the remains did not find any fishing hooks or line in the nest.
A brief examination was performed by veterinary staff in which they noted the entire left side to be covered in blood which appears to have come from a broken blood feather on the left wing. No other traumatic wounds were found to have occurred prior to the eaglet’s passing.

The remains of E14 have been sent to the Southeast Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS) at the University of Georgia for further evaluation and testing, including testing for rodenticides that may have contributed to the eaglet’s death. It will take some time before we receive the results, but we will be sure to share them once they are available.
For those curious about the unhatched egg, we were able to determine that it was fertilized and had developed partially, but were unable to determine why it did not hatch

:cry1: After 3 days, I sat down to watch the eagles 🦅 and learned of E14’s death... Why didn’t CROW rescue this eaglet after realizing that it was bleeding and clearly something wrong? Will this change how things are handled in the future? “An adult” flew off with something... zooming it in, it looked like E14... Was this “adult” Harriet or M15? Also, just read about the egg 🥚 being fertilized, it halfway grew... will they examine the fetus to find out what went wrong? Apologize for the questions, I just learned of this 😭 H and M lost 2 babies this year....

luv_eaglets Let me try to explain. Everything happened so fast with E14 and the Pritchetts and CROW worked all night trying to get the permits needed to enter an active nest. It has to be approved. You add to that the fact that night came very quickly and they could not do anything in the dark. By the time it was light as we all know---we had lost E14.We might not have been able to save her if we had gotten to her earlier---birds can bleed out through a blood/pin feather very quickly. I'm not entirely sure if what that adult had was part of E14 or not---it may have been. The honest truth is that after their short period of mourning eagles quickly move on and E14 would become a food object. In the picture above at CROW E14 looks pretty much there. As far as the undeveloped eaglet inside the egg---it has been there for a while and they might not be able to tell why it stopped growing. There could be many reasons. We were all surprised just to find out that it had been fertile and had a chick inside

I hope this helps---it's about all that I know.

Welcome to the forum, luv_eaglets20, and I'm sorry it's under such sad circumstances.

I was going to try to reply to your questions, but I see that MaryF has already done so, with more details than I had available.

Please do consider joining us here as we watch what Harriet and M15 do next, and/or seeing what's happening on some of the other nests we follow.

Hello everyone. I grieve with you over the loss of our precious E14. A friend and fellow spotter at the nest helped me get this footage at the nest today.

CROW Removes Precious E14 H & M Protect Their Area From Intruder 01-15-20

It is a sad day today as E14 passed away early this morning. CROW was able to come and retrieve E14's precious remains and the non-viable egg to determine the cause of death. M15 was in the nest when CROW arrived and left as the bucket was raised to the nest. M vocalized warnings and circled the nest tree before perching at a distance. As CROW and the truck were leaving, Harriet arrived to the nest tree, vocalizing at a 3-4 yr old sub adult circling the nest tree. M arrived to help Harriet secure the territory. They remained in the nest tree before Harriet dropped to the nest. Soar high and free little one. You now have your wings. You will always be part of H & M and tucked tight in our hearts. We will find strength observing Harriet, and M15 as they grieve.

I am praying for our entire eagle family, that we always remember E and appreciate how beautiful and precious this eagle family is. To see all of the condolences for precious E gives me hope that someday EVERY person will have an appreciation for animals and help protect and care for them and their habitats. Thank you Pritchett family and zoomies and mods for all of the wonderful memories, with so many more to come in the next season. Love to all.♥️

Thank you, Mary, for keeping us informed during this difficult day. So thankful that CROW could complete their report so quickly.

Thank you, Vicki, for your video of CROW and M and H returning to their nest tree.

Together we grieve, mourn in our own ways, and we'll always remember adorable, feisty E14 who gave us many moments to smile and brought us all joy.

Definitely a tough day and tough end to what was an almost cursed season - starting with the owl attacks, followed by the nonviable egg, and ultimately ending in the tragic untimely passing of E14 - it was like this season was just never meant to be. The upside is that as a long watch of nests - Harriet has had an amazing success rate a producing fledglings and this nest relative to most nests has been amazingly successful - not to sound harsh but statistically this nest was probably due for some heartbreak unfortunately. I know that is of little consolation but it is a part of nature. We can all hope that next season is better. R.I.P. E14.

00h51 (24h and 20 minutes) after the incredible
Dad seems to be on the attic, awaked, Mom is tucked in sleeping on the outer attic. So quiet, only the noise of the traffic...

Already one day without you dear E14... what happened to us ? what am i intend to do now ?
I miss you so much that i can't go further to the other nests for now, probably later.

But at only 26 days and 18 or 19 h you imprinted me so much even in the darkness of your nest during the night, in the early morning when you began to call for your breakfast and sometimes during your midday…

Now i know the sense of your night chirpings yesterday. Little Thing you ressented that something not normal was happening to you.
Your strength was going away, it was becoming difficult to move under mom and in addition the cold was penetrating you until finally you fall asleep forever surrounded by the love of all and especially those who didn't want to believe the unthinkable.

At a moment will come the time to let you go but please stay still with me for a while, i need it so much.

Harriet and M15 i wanted to tell you how sad i am for you.
How like you I can not bear this loneliness, E14 so small that had brought so much love around her, so much life in the nest, is no longer, just her spirits, our memories as sometimes i still hears her chirpings, our tears …
These days are going to be long for you Mom and Dad too and my thoughts will be with both of you all these moments. If it doesnt' help you, be sure it will help me.

For all the others :rh: :grhug:

As this is the first time this has happened for me, here in the nest of Harriet and M15 at SWFEC since I joined you season 2016-2017 with E9, I need your help. For our bemoved E14 I will prepare his "In Memoriam" post.
viewtopic.php?p=273424#p273424
I will definitely take 6 nice pictures of this thread. If someone does not want i used hers/his, Simply let me know by MP.
I thought it would also be nice if several of you wrote me a line or 2 about E14 and the almost 27 days she spent with us i will integrated this messages also in the post.
E14 knows how she was loved and by so many, i'm sure she still ressents this love, and then also she will able to read it as we will do. (Not hundreds as i don't want to see the forum exploded…)
Reassured you, it's a proposition, not an obligation
Thank you for your attention

I have a few photos here that were taken up in the tree when E14 was being removed from the nest. I'm going to post the links rather than the pictures themselves so that you can decide if you want to see them.

From CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. A portion of the eaglet was consumed by the parents, but a majority of the remains were intact.
