~ Will D33 and D32 recognize each other? ~
The short answer is we don't know!
Kay said that when she puts hatch-year great horned owls in the great horned owl flight pen, the young owls going in find the young owls already in there. She likened it to dropping off your young child at preschool or daycare... your child finds others to be with.
The longer answer is that SOAR has not had more than one very young hatch-year eagle from the same nest to observe what happens / what behaviors are seen when they leave ICU for a flight pen.
D33 and D32 may not be at the same point in recovery and rehabilitation for these two to be in a small flight pen together for Kay to observe the reaction and response.
Photo used here is of four hatch-year bald eagles admitted in June 2018 from black fly disturbance at each nest.

Hi Philjo, Elaine , Heather and all \\

SOAR - Saving Our Avian Resources
9 hrs ·
~ The Eaglet Nursery ~

The snowy owl residents of one of the 10x20 flight pens were moved to their air conditioned summer quarters (Iowa heat and humidity are not what snowy owls like). Then the 10x20 flight pen was cleaned and made ready to be the 2019 Eaglet "Nursery."
Why only a 10x20 area? These eaglets need space to stretch out their wings, start flapping exercises, and making short flight attempts from point A to point B. Too much space, too soon is not always the best.
The first eaglets ready to move from ICU to the nursery are D33 and a hatch-year 2019 bald eagle from Allamakee County. These eaglets are reliably eating, drinking, and pooping. Any medication routines needed are complete. Patients will often "telegraph" that they are ready for a change of scenery.
Moving days like this are the time when eagles are weighed, a beak depth measurement taken, blood drawn for a blood lead level (if not already done), and a dose of ivomec to control external parasites. (We'll post separately about parasite control!)
D33 weighs in at 11.5 pounds and her beak depth measurement indicates she is a female. (Again... we'll post separately about beak depth measurement).
Allamakee is boy weighing 8.5 pounds and a beak depth consistent with male bald eagles.

Congratulations D33 on your promotion to Nursery. You are are beautiful and strong eaglet and I’m sure you will progress rapidly and be ready to move again soon.

Thanks for the good news concerning D33, so normally D32 should be a female two as there were no more difference between those two in their nest...

DETERMINING GENDER IN BALD EAGLES
By SOAR - Linette19 June 2019Notes
As part of ongoing data collection looking at bald eagles and lead exposure in birds admitted to wildlife rehabilitators in Iowa, SOAR started collecting beak depth measurements. A research paper from Garcelon et al (Journal of Wildlife Management 49(3):1985) is the basis for SOAR to use beak depth measurement for a gender determination. The Garcelon paper discussed 12 different measurements taken on bald eagles, but that beak depth showed no overlap in values between the sexes. This is the least invasive way to determine gender. A metric dial caliper is used and the measurement is taken from the top of the upper beak (maxilla) next to the cere to the bottom point on the lower beak (mandible). The paper describes it: “from the dorsal aspect of the maxilla adjacent to the cere, to the ventralmost portion of the mandible.” The measurement is expressed in centimeters (cm).
screenshot_02.jpg
In the bald eagles measured in the Garcelon et al study, male bald eagles had a beak depth range of 3.0 cm to 3.349 cm, while the female bald eagle beak depth ranged from 3.35 cm to 3.6 cm. All the eagles in the study were North Central United States and Canada and should be transferable to bald eagles in Iowa.

Also remember that female bald eagles will weigh more than males and that northern bald eagles are larger than those from the southern U.S.

~ 20 June 2019 D32 Update
~
D32 is remaining quiet and content. The splint / cast seems to be staying in place. Still being offered cut-up food so no need to stand on food to rip / tear. Kay will not worry about a weight or a beak depth measurement until possibly the next trip to the veterinarian (no the appointment is not scheduled). Limited handling means limited stress. So... basically, no news is good news.
