Standley Lake Regional Park CO Eagles - 2018-2023

Post by JudyB » Tue Feb 27, 2018 8:28 am

Thanks to golden1 for discovering this cam and pulling together most of the information in these opening posts!

Admin Note - I'm continuing this thread into the next season as there aren't many posts. ~JudyB

Update - November 23 2022 - the eagles are still using their remote nest so the cam is still on Bird Island; posts for the 2023 nesting season and the related Stats start here - viewtopic.php?f=44&t=143&p=623087#p623085

Update - January 27 2022 - Standley Lake Regional Park has announced the eagles have moved to a new location that is still within the park, but is too far from the Nature Center for a camera signal. Because there will no longer be an eagle camera, they will be moving the camera on Bird Island, with over 60 great blue heron nests and a variety of other wildlife. Their Facebook page will also include occasional updates on the eagles from Kirstin Chapman, who monitors the nest for the Bird Conservancy and Colorado Parks & Wildlife. We wish the eagles a safe and productive year in their new home. ~JudyB

Colorado is in the mountain time zone.

This cam is in Westminster, Colorado. The nest is on the Northwest edge of the Park. It has been here since 1993. Once the eagles started to construct their nest, the area was closed off so that the nesting pair of eagles would not be disturbed. They have produced 2 eaglets each year since 1994. However, in 2016, they raised three eaglets. After the 2016 nesting season, the adults built a new nest in the next tree to the northeast of the original nest.

The camera system was installed in the Fall of 2016. "The Standley Lake Eagle cam was installed in the Fall of 2016 by a team of City of Westminster Open Space staff, the Company View Into the Blue, and United Power, who donated all their time and man power to install it. The pole was placed between the new nest and the old nest." This is a solar powered camera system. There is no night view and no audio.

2017 was the first year we were able to view the nest, and the parents again raised three eaglets. The cam went down before they fledged, but local observers reported seeing all three branching, and later seeing all three perched nearby - so a good first year on cam!

Eggs are usually laid in the first two weeks of February. Eaglets hatch in March and fledge by mid June. The juveniles usually leave the area by October or November.

2017-2018 Season:
  • eggs laid: February 26, 6:11 pm; March 1, 4:39 pm; March 4, 6:01 pm
  • hatched: April 7 or 8, seen April 9 at 6:33 am; other eggs didn't hatch
  • named:
  • fledged: June 27
  • last seen: latest screenshot I found was August 17
2018-2019 Season:
  • The cam went offline in January; the pair successfully raised a chick named Willow by viewers
2019-2020 Season:
  • eggs laid: March 1, 4:17 pm; March 4, around 6:40 pm; March 7, 11:30 pm
  • intruder: April 6, a female intruder fought with Mom; Mom may have returned briefly, but there were no additional confirmed sightings of her; Dad incubated, leaving briefly to eat.
  • hatched: April 12, 2:02 pm (39 days if second egg, 36 days if 3rd egg); other eggs didn't hatch
  • sad news: April 13 was cold and snowy, and Dad was off the nest defending it from the female; by the morning of April 14, the chick had died
  • new beginnings: Dad mostly stopped incubating on the 14th, and became more comfortable with the new female over the next week or so; on April 22 they mated and then worked on the nest, beginning to act like a bonded pair
  • named: April 22, park staff began calling the new female F420 (for female April 2020)
2020-2021 Season:
  • eggs laid: February 27, 5:28 pm; March 2, 5:33 pm
  • hatched: April 7, seen 1:42 pm (39 days); maybe seen April 8, 1:00 pm
  • sad news: there never was a clear view of two chicks, so if both eggs hatched, one chick died within a day or two
  • more sad news: the nest tree fell down on May 13, and SL1 did not survive
2021-2022 Season:
  • eggs laid: at least one by February 26
  • hatched: feeding observed April 4; 2 chicks eventually seen
  • sad news: both adults left the nest untended on the morning of April 24, and the Park reported on April 25 that apparently both eaglets had died; all had appeared to be going well and the cause is unknown

The Standley Lake eagles laid their first egg February 26 at 6:11 pm.

Elfruler Elf captured the moment, and gave us permission to post a link to her video and to post the two screenshots taken from it below - thanks, Elf!

9:20 - 9:30 am, mountain time

A few shots of the adults. They weren't incubating, but were definitely keeping an eye on their first egg.

The camera didn't get up to the branch in time, but from what I could observe, I'm pretty sure they were working on the next egg.

A nice look at their territory, and them surveying it.

Second egg arrived at 3/1 2018 at 4:39pm We are pretty sure the third egg was laid in a very windy nest on 3/4/18 at approximately 6:01pm.

2018 Summary

Only one of the eggs hatched (the cam page said the other two were either infertile or non-viable, which suggests to me they weren't disrupted during incubation, but I wasn't watching so don't know that for sure); according to the cam page, the hatch occurred Saturday, April 7 and was announced by the cam operator on April 8; there were cam issues and bad weather over the weekend, so the eaglet was first seen and recorded on cam at 6:33 am. That eaglet thrived, and fledged on June 27. He or she was seen visiting the nest often through July, and the latest screenshot I found was August 17 (though visits were less frequent then).

2019 Nesting Season

Unfortunately the cam is not working as of mid-January. The operators are trying to find a way to fix it remotely, but if they can't do that, they won't be able to visit the site until August or September, when the eagles leave. I think there are some folks who can view the nest from a safe distance, so hopefully there will be updates on Facebook whether or not there is a cam.

I just checked their facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1824193774497204/), and the camera is still down, and the rangers are reporting that the eagles seem to be actively working on their original nest, and are not yet incubating.
