08-17 FSV46 (127 do) i wish you'll have a big and strong family :luck:

This is the end... as the cams are off or maintenance

Thanks Mom and Dad your little one became a beautiful Juvie :rh:
Thanks to FSV45 who offered its life :brknhrt: :cry1: when he was only 42 days old to protect its own and that of its young sibling. FSV45 valiantly fought off an overly strong raccoon that tried to break into the nest. No one will forget and you will remain in everyone's hearts and memories. :rh:

Camera work at Xcel Energy's Fort St. Vrain Eagle nest. A raccoon killed one of the nestlings this year, so John Howe and Bill Heston installed a racoon guard.

Summary of the 2022 Nesting Season

The pair laid three eggs again in 2022, on March 3, March 6 and March 9. Two of them hatched (likely the first two) on April 11 and April 13; the chicks were designated FSV45 and FSV46. Sad news again this year - a raccoon came into the nest the evening of May 23rd when the chicks were alone; 6-week-old FSV45 scared it off the first time, but it returned and grabbed the feisty young eaglet and dragged him/her off the nest even though at least one adult had arrived by then and was flying at the raccoon; the remains of the eaglet were recovered in the morning. The raccoon tried again on May 26, but this time one of the adults was on the nest with the remaining eaglet, and they succeeded in chasing the raccoon off. I did not see any additional reports of visits by the raccoon, and FSV46 fledged successfully on July 1st. The 125-day-old eaglet was still in the area on August 16 when the cams were turned off - and local observers reported seeing the young eagle as late as August 28, almost 2 months after fledging.

2021 fledgling FSV44 was captured after fledging and fitted with a tracker, and he is still checking in. I read on Facebook that a new map of his travels should be available soon. (Note: I'm using male pronouns because measurements taken while the tracker was being fitted showed he was likely a young male. Measurements are very accurate, but not perfect, so if he eventually lays eggs, we'll know he was a small female - but he's almost certainly male.)
