Grosbeak,
That area of feathers is called the mantle.

Link: https://ccbbirds.org/2009/06/27/the-man ... to-mantle/

Check out M15's mantle raised, the night the owl knocked him into the nest.

More of the mantle is raised in these two scaps:

Hope that helps 🙂
Thanks Androcat! Appreciate the help. How's that Grosbeak! The "mantle" refers to the feathers in the upper middle of the back that form a "V" shape below the neck feathers (nape) on the back of the head.

I was super interested in your mantle discussions. Read the info from Cb, thanks so much for that, grosbeak or suemac? I read some really great info at The Spruce, of all places. Sorry this is coming out in green. Not trying to steal anyone’s color. ;)

 Peggy! great info and really cool pics. Thank you. I bookmarked that site. No worries on color- I love green!

Androcat, Suemac, Peggy, et al.

Thanks very much for your inputs concerning the mantle and its significance.

Androcat, I rewatched the video of M's being struck and knocked off into the nest and observed the defensive posture you mentioned. I also rewatched your next owl strike video in which M flew around and landed in the nest. He adopted the same pose in that instance. Is that reaction not the same as that of other raptor types that are said to "get their hackles up"? And likewise anthropomorphically in the case of an irate human?

Merci. :)

Hello everyone! Androcat thank you for information and link on mantle!
I also have noticed what Grosbeak saw. When the adults are giving vocal alerts, as Grosbeak referred, their hackles are up. When all is calm again, the mantle feathers gently lay back down. It is kind of cool. I have seen that many times. So glad to learn more new things!!

Kind of reminded me of a cat when it's scared, the scruff, raises.
Thank you Sue, and everyone else for great info!

M15 flies in with a hunk of UFO meat. Harriet drops to the nest and conducts a feeding. Both E's get bites. After eating the entire hunk of UFO meat, both E's have good-sized crops. Cam1/Cam2/Cam3/360 slo-mo.

M15 delivers a large fresh fish. E19 eats first, while E20 is submissive, watching from the rails. E19 has to lie down, and E20 has their turn to get fish bites. E20 gets so stuffed, they are lying down, taking their bites. At 27:32, a nice look at the two stuffed E's. Cam1/Cam2/Cam3/360 slo-mo.

Good Thursday morning everyone.
The Es have been active and moving sticks and nest material around.
Their tails are getting larger and make a good rudder for balance.
I think this is E20 wingersizing--so cute.

Afternoon peeps! These are a few scaps from last night.
M stayed safely perched in attic, all night. But not to say, he was quiet. He sounded alert vocals, just before 1am, 1:25am, 2:22am, and at 4:02am. Harriet slept through the first three, but joined in at the 4am round. Going by what Journi said, E19 on the left of Harriet, looked up at M on the 1&2 o'clock alarms. E20 didn't see.
IMG_20220120_143459_751.JPG
Harriet started out @the 6 o'clock position in nest. E19 was a wiggle worm all night. In and out from under mom. Couldn't get comfy because of that full crop??
She moved at 3am, and did some aerating. E19 was awake. E20 snoozed on. Then everybirdy got comfortable again. Harriet tucked her head. E19 has it's big little foot out to side.
IMG_20220120_143647_117.JPG
This is my favorite s'cap of night. What do you see???? I see an "shadow octopus" creeping across the nest. :w00t: Kind of loving theses shadows at night.
4:31 am
IMG_20220120_143529_199.JPG
Temp was 58° @ midnight. 56°@2am, and 54° @ 4am. Didn't drop so much, like the night before. Another peaceful night, in the pine!
Just want to say I'm having big issues with my hands and back pain. It's very hard to type. I may not posting a lot, until my hands work better. But I am watching all night! Every night! Have a great day peeps! :bye 1:
