Another photo from scott h4! Thank you Scott!

To quote scott h4 "Hello everyone, not sure if it's good news but I spotted a third chick on Tuesday."

Oh my! I will surely hope for the very best scenario for this nest. I was dreading the possibility of watching 3 on Delta 2. :luck: :luck: :luck: Thank you Sharon and Scott!

Hi Vicki and Scott -- wonderful images -- thanks and a private and public thanks.

By the way the Hastings nest was a very collaborative affair.

First, it took Krista Voth of the VAncouver Parks Board to finally pull together all the string pullers to allow HWF to build the nest -- after 4 years of requests. . Then it was the collaborative effort of our long time volunteers Larry Dorosh, Mike Seear our Vancouver City chief nest monitor and myself up the tree for the fun part of building the nest. Then of course there were Diana Seear's cinnamon buns that kept us going. And then of course there was the constantly encouraging First Nations community drummers who kept driving the neighbors forward -- and giving me a Coast Salish Name for "White-headed Eagle Man". We thank you all.

David Hancock,
Hancock Wildlife Foundation.

Wow David, what an honour! How does "White-headed Eagle Man" sound in the Coast Salish language?

You are welcome Gemini.
Yes I thought they look very healthy.
The 3rd eaglet looked a bit under the weather, but it's ok. It likes to sleep a lot so it seems.
I photographed it as well but for some reason my pictures would not upload even though they are the right size.
I will try again later.

Two good looking youngsters doing what they ought to be doing this time of year. Thanks Annemie! I'm so glad you're able to visit them!

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
Image

And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.

We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
Image

At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.

And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.

With that in mind....

We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.

The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive
Hi everyone!

I've been thinking lately about how wonderful things can come in small packages - mighty eagles like these:
Image
arrived in little packages like this:
Image
(The adults are from French Creek, our newest nest, and the tiny chicks are Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve being fed by Mom Res)

I'm also reminded of how small the window is for us to visit the nests and clean the cams while the eagles are away.

I have been focused on nest adoptions - but equally important are the smaller donations that may not be able to do that much all by themselves - but when they join with other donations, they can be mighty! I was outdoors yesterday during a fairly short but very powerful rainstorm - and it was amazing what all those little drops of water could do when they worked together!

We are only about halfway to our goal of $10,000 towards getting as many of our cams as possible cleaned this summer - and if everyone who reads this was able to donate $25 or $50 (or a bit more if possible) - I think we'd reach our goal.

Image

A big
Thank You!
to all who have donated,
and to our wonderful zoomer teams,
and to all who help in other ways,
posting observations, screenshots, videos, and so much more.

PS - Donations are still being matched - the first $1000 pledge was quickly matched, but I have not been doing a good job of reminding people that there was a second pledge of $500, and so far we've only matched half of that. So at least the next $250 in donations will be matched.

Please help us clean the cams before the eagles return.
