Hastings Street/PNE Nest, Vancouver - 2018 & 2019

Post by gemini » Tue Feb 13, 2018 12:33 am

Hastings St./PNE Nest

This is one of 19 nests that are monitored by the Stanley Park Ecological Society. Since both they, and several HWF members, visit this nest on occasion and take pictures, there will be various photographers contributing to the photos and comments in this thread.

As eagle territories go, this is a relatively new new territory, the first nest having been built in the 2007 season and producing only one fledgling from the two chicks that hatched. Global-TV did a story on this pair because they seemed to be so unique building their nest next to a busy parking lot right across from the PNE (Pacific Northwest Exhibition). Talk about urban eagles with children, adults, vehicles passing by constantly and noisy too!! They are not that far from the Burrard Inlet but actually need not go that far for branches and grasses and food as there is a big pond at the PNE in the sanctuary area that is close to the nest.

2008 was a better year for this pair as they successfully raised two fledglings. 2008/09 saw them successfully raise one fledgling, 2009/10 one, 2010/11 two, 2011/12 two, 2012/13 two and in 2013/14 there were three eaglets. Unfortunately the tree was partially destroyed during a windstorm and all three chicks eventually fell from what was left of the nest.

The youngest, the first to fall, did not survive the fall, the next two fell separately in the following days. Fortunately they were not injured and were rescued by The Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society where they were placed with a foster "Mom," a female adult eagle named Curly, until they were ready for release. Read about their rescue HERE and HERE

Meanwhile, the parents having decided that they still quite liked the area, proceeded to build a new nest located right across the street from the old nest on the PNE grounds just east of the SW drive entrance on the north side of Hastings.

The eaglets recovered from their traumatic fall nicely and were released two months later in a park just a few blocks from their original nest and have since been observed hanging out with their parents in the new nest tree. Read observations and view photos of their release HERE.

The 2014/15 season saw Ma and Pa Hastings return to their new nest on the PNE grounds to lay two eggs that successfully hatched. Unfortunately, once again there was a fierce wind storm on the early morning of June 12. Although the nest did not appear to be damaged at first, it was weakened to the point that four days later it fell to the ground. One eaglet succumbed immediately and a day later the second eaglet met the same fate. For details of the storm and following events please click HERE Ma and Pa Hastings hung around to defend their territory until migration time and were last reported seen on July 21.

The 2015/16 season began on Sept 26 when our Hastings pair were spotted perched in last year's nest tree on the PNE grounds by members Annemie and Steamer. However, in the first week of December, the eagles returned to their original nesting tree across the street on the parking lot and the beginnings of a new nest was seen. Both eagles were seen placing sticks on the nest as it began to take shape and grow in size.

Several members expressed doubt as to the stability of the foundation branches. However, the nest was completed and eggs were laid in March and incubation began. Unfortunately the doubts of our members came to fruition. The integrity of the major branch supporting the nest had been compromised having been previously damaged and it gave way under the weight of the nest destroying it and the egg(s) in the process just a day or two before hatching was due to take place. Once again Mom and Dad Hastings faced a disastrous nesting season.

The 2017 season brought Mom and Dad Hastings back to their territory where they built yet another nest back on the PNE grounds several trees away from their 2013/14 nest tree. It looked for all intents and purposes to be substantial enough to raise a family. Eggs were laid and two eaglets hatched. They thrived under the care of their parents. One eaglet fledged and then disaster hit. The nest again collapsed before the second eaglet fledged leaving it stranded on a branch. Unfortunately, it didn't survive. It is unknown whether it fell from the branch or was a victim of predating.

The 2018 season was more successful – but only just! Yes, on July 7, the nest came tumbling down once again in an overnight storm! Both eaglets however survived and were found the next day in the nest tree on different branches where their parents continued to care for them. The eaglet that fell to the lower branch finally made it back to the nest branch and the small remaining bit of nest on July 10 to be with its sibling who had made it back the day after the nest collapsed. Both eaglets continued to thrive and do what eaglets do, branching for about a week. On July 14 both were missing from the nest tree – we believe they had both fledged. The eaglets were seen flying around the nest site area for the next few weeks before leaving for good.

This is a photo of Dad in his favorite perch tree overlooking the old nest. Due to the close proximity of the new nest to the old nest it is not unreasonable to think that he may just continue to use this as his main perch tree. The tree has a clear view of the entire area and will overlook the new nest which is just across the street.

Hi everyone

I was texted by one of the groundskeepers at the PNE that one of the Eagles returned yesterday October 6, 2017. I am not at that nest very often so I'm sure Annemie or Vicki will keep us posted when the other one returns.

Hi everyone

I have seen the Hastings eagles flying about the last few days.
I can see them all from my living room window.

Two Juvenile's were seen yesterday at Canuck's house by a lady named Linda Aston.
Canuck is the famous Vancouver crow.

One eaglet was chased by crows all around the power lines, and it looked very dangerous.
A 2nd eaglet was circling overhead the whole time, observing the situation.

Both eaglets finally did fly North over to Hastings park, a 5 min. walk from Canuck's place.
Linda Aston Martin made 3 videos of one of the eaglet while the other eaglet was circling the area:

Thank you Linda Aston Martin for letting me post these pictures and telling us what you saw.

The danger evident in your pictures had me worried for the youngster. I can't imagine following such activity live! Good news of the return of our Hastings couple. Another start of year hoping for a more solid nest for them for a more successful nesting season! :luck: Thank you for the pictures Annemie and Linda!

I received a tip from Annemie that Diana and Mike had spotted both the Hastings pair recently and the makings of their new nest :announce:

Braving the wind chill :cold1: and armed with my binoculars I spotted the new nest today. The new nest is at the exact same location in the tree as the fallen nest from last years season. Not quite finished but coming along. Hopefully it will stay up this year once complete! :luck:

Very exciting day at the Hastings nest folks! :) Both eagles were clearly visible from a distance at the new nest. Ma up top on a perch and Dad doing the construction work underneath. At one point Dad flew off and came back with a stick. Nest is starting to take shape :bravo:.

Later both sat side by side on a perch in the full sun....lovely sight!

As Annemie and I left Pa was back to building the rim. I wish them the best with the latest nest :eag:

Annemie tried to get some pictures but the camera battery went dead. If she managed any good ones before it died she'll post them for sure :luck:

 Hi Stim, Diana, Sharon and all lovers of these eagles.

:cold1: It is very cold indeed but the Hastings eagles were never the less very busy with their nest.

Just I was pulling out the camera, Pa flew off.

Ma kept working on the nest.

Hastings Feb. 20 th.jpg

Pa came back with a big twig.
I did not get that shot as the camera battery went dead. :shame:

Then Pa flew to get another twig.
They both were really enthusiastic.
As Pa flew away, Ma Hastings tried out the nest.

Great pictures! Thanks... From what Mike and I saw it looks a bit sturdier than the last nest so hopefully all will go well this year. There is a nice groundskeeper called Ben that keeps an eye on them and will contact us if he sees anything that looks alarming. Annemei do you know when she started incubating last year?

As indicated on the other forum the new nest is coming along nicely folks. It survived the first test of the big snow fall.

I wish the pair good luck on the 2018 season :thumlft:

I am glad you like the picture Diana and you are welcome.
Unfortunately I don't remember when the Hastings Eagles started to incubate last year and I don't remember if I wrote it down. I do however remember that the Hastings couple were one of our more earlier couples starting to incubate last year.

I will start keeping a log and if I remember more I will let you know Diana.

One of the pair came flying in across the Sanctuary pond around 3.30 PM. Sat right beside the trunk of the tree on the nest during the rest of our visit to the park. Nest looks good! :thumlft:

As a matter of interest:
by: sctth4 - March 18, 2017

There has been an eagle in the nest for about a week now, seems to be on track.

By Steamer March 18, 2017

Took a return walk with the binoculars and from the top of the parking lot on the south side of Hastings St. the one eagle head I saw on the center of the nest stuck out like a sore thumb in direct sunlight....easy spot.

.........Oh by the way the single eagle on the new nest was sitting down in the exact same spot during my entire visit.....looks like egg time fingers crossed

Lots of activity on the nest today but still not sure if there's a egg. Will try again for more observations on the days to come to see how frequent they are seen on the nest.

Hi folks

I have noticed that there has been an eagle in the nest since the 27th but today Stan and I are pretty sure that
:announce: we have an egg in the nest.

We saw changing of the guard, and egg rolling going on.

What a proud parent.
