Camp Olave Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast BC - 2019-2022 seasons

Post by heatherj » Tue Oct 22, 2019 6:09 pm

Welcome to the Camp Olave nest thread

If you visit the nest you are welcome to post comments and/or pictures here. The nest is located in Wilson Creek on the Sunshine Coast BC, just north of Vancouver. The nest tree is on private property (Camp Olave - Girl Guides camp) but the nest is visible from the beach in front of the camp. This beach is accessible only at low tide unless you have access through the Camp.

This nest was new to the forum in 2016/2017 but I believe that a pair of eagles has been in residence in this territory for quite some time. I have been watching them since 2011 and have seen adults and juveniles in the territory each year. Then in March 2016 I was excited to find their nest. I watched the nest throughout the season but sadly the nest collapsed sometime in April, May or June. I don't know if the chick(s) survived but I did see a juvenile with the adults later in the summer so I'm hopeful. The eagles built a nest in a different tree for the 2016/2017 season and this time had more success with definitely one and possibly two successful fledges . The nest did collapse again though this time much later in the season - I did see both eaglets after the nest collapse but was only able to confirm 1 successful fledge. They have rebuilt their nest in this second tree each successive year and though the nest has collapsed each year, they have successfully raised chicks :)

This pair are neighbours to the Hendersons and the Brownings
  • 2015/16 - Nest collapsed in early summer but possibly 1 eaglet fledged
  • 2016/17 - 2 eaglets seen in the nest. Nest collapsed sometime between July 31 and Aug 5. Definitely 1 successful fledge on or before Aug 14. No details on whether the second eaglet fledged.
  • 2017/18 - 2 eaglets seen in the nest. Nest collapsed sometime between June 22 and July 9. 1 eaglet fledged on or before July 20. Second eaglet possibly fledged on or before Aug 7
  • 2018/19 - 2 eaglets, successfully fledged on or before July 29
  • 2019/20 - 1 eaglet fledged on or before July 30
  • 2020/21 - 1 eaglet fledged on or before July 6, second eaglet presumed fledged on or before Aug 5
  • 2021/22. 1 eaglet seen in the nest in early June. No info on whether it fledged successfully

Red circle is the current nest, orange circle is the 2015/2016 nest. Green circle is the Henderson nest, their closest neighbours.

I visited the nest today and Ma and Pa were both in residence! :)

When I arrived Ma was sitting quite low down near the nest tree with Pa sitting on the beach at the opposite side of the bay. After trying to retrieve something from the kelp he gave up and flew back to one of their favourite trees.

I am very late posting this but I did get to the nest on Mar 26 and saw one adult I think Pa flying in from the ocean looking very handsome! It was a very grey dull day so not the best day for photos :(

And also one tail peeking out over the top of the nest so looks like Ma was sitting. :)

I hope to get there over the long weekend so hoping to see some evidence of eaglets. :luck:

Thanks Sandra! Yes looks like their breeding season is going well so far :)

I visited on May 28 and saw Ma in the nest playing peek a boo at first. But then I managed to get a better angle plus I think she moved a bit too. Perhaps a fluffy head in the third pic where Ma is bending down. I'm not sure but could it be an eaglet stretching up?

No sign of Pa as I was at the nest but as I was almost back at the entrance to the beach I saw Pa come in from the ocean side heading towards the nest. So all still looks to be progressing normally at this nest. :D

I visited on Jun 4 and when I arrived the nest appeared empty and I saw no adults in the area.

But 1 minute later Pa flew in and landed above the nest. ANd uit was then I noticed Ma who had been perched in a nearby tree.

A few minutes later Pa flew down to the rocks in front of the nest and seemed to be looking for something, maybe crabs as I have previously seen him taking crabs up to the nest.

But then a juvenile flew over and he took off pretty quickly to shoo the juvie away :)

After seeing off the juvie, Pa flew up to the nest and he began to feed the eaglet. I hadn't seen him carry anything up to the nest so there must have been some leftovers in the nest.

Then I didn't see exactly what happened but I think there was a bit of a border dispute between the Brownings and the WIlson Creekers further down the beach. Pa flew around in a few circles along the beach calling out perhaps making sure that the other adults knew that he was there. He then landed back in the same tree above the nest.

I left shortly after that and as I left Junior sat quietly in the nest with Ma and Pa perched above seeming to be a happy family :)

Contrary to my previous comment I didn't see any evidence of a second eaglet but there could have been another one unseen at the back of the nest. Maybe on my next visit :luck:

I visited the nest this morning and all seemed quiet. A pretty contented looking single eaglet was visible in the nest with Ma and Pa perched nearby. So it looked as though breakfast had already been delivered and eaten! :)

A brief exchange with the neighbours, the Brownings, when Pa Browning seemed to do a very close flyby to the joint boundary, perhaps testing the boundaries? :dunno:

2020 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

It's hard to believe that the fluffy little eaglets we first met in April are already flying around - and at least one of them is already half-way up the coast of British Columbia, feasting on salmon at one of the rivers with early salmon runs. The rest will be heading out soon, which will give us a brief window to clean the cameras, check the wiring and do any additional projects near the nests. Only one of our nests is currently sponsored (big thanks to Russ Cmolik for donating a new close-up cam for White Rock!) so we are asking those who enjoy the cams to help us get them ready for next year. We know life this year is different for many of us - but if you can help, we would really appreciate it.
Image

We have some big plans - two new cams for White Rock, replacement domes at Surrey Reserve and Delta 2, and hopefully getting to the bottom of the connectivity issue that keeps taking the South cam at Harrison Mills offline - and there will be some large expenses if we're going to do it all. We'll need a lift to get people up to the cams at White Rock and possibly at Delta, and the tree at Harrison Mills is very tall, requiring a professional climbing team if we are to do any work on the cams themselves.

If we can raise $10,000, we should be able to do the most essential work at most of the nests. And happily some friends of the eagles have pledged to match the first $1250 raised in the next three days - so if you adopt Delta 2, Harrison Mills, Surrey Reserve or White Rock for next year for $250, Hancock Wildlife will get $500!

The easiest way to adopt a nest is to
  • go to the "Donations" page on our website (https://hancockwildlife.org/donations/ - or click the button below)
  • click the "Donate via CanadaHelps Now!" link
  • enter the amount of your donation ($250 to adopt the nest of your choice for the coming year)
  • pick "Adopt a Nest" from the Fund list
  • use the message box to say which nest you are adopting and how you would like your name to be listed
  • fill in your contact information and credit card details, and
  • click "Complete Donation Now"
Image

And if this isn't a good time for adopting a nest, you can also make a donation of any amount to the "Eagle Cams/General Repairs" fund or you can make a monthly donation by changing the highlighted box at the top of the page from "Donate Now" to "Donate Monthly" (the first month's donation is eligible to be matched). Many of the funds have a suggested amount - but that is just a suggestion. The amount you put in the Amount box is what you'll donate.

You don't need to be in Canada to use CanadaHelps - and the rate of exchange right now is favorable to those of us in the United States - a donation of $250 Canadian dollars is currently less than $200 US dollars, so if you give $250 through CanadaHelps (or PayPal), HWF gets $250 Canadian dollars, and the cost to you is based on the current rate of exchange.

You can also use the other methods on the Donations page, but it's not as easy to provide all the information, so if you're sending a check or planning to give a donation directly to someone at HWF, please let me ([email protected]) or gemini ([email protected]) know a donation is coming so it gets included in the matching drive.

And if you have any questions about any of this, please do contact me or gemini and we'll be happy to help.

Thank You!
