Field Rd Bald Eagles, Sunshine Coast, BC - 2019-2022 seasons

Post by heatherj » Tue Oct 22, 2019 5:14 pm

Welcome to the Field Rd nest thread

If you visit the Field Rd nest in Wilson Creek on the Sunshine Coast, BC, Canada you are welcome to post comments and pictures here.

This nest was new to the forum in 2016 though the nest has been occupied at least since 2011 and probably a lot longer. The nest is in a big Douglas Fir on private property and any views from public property are from quite a distance or would require bushwacking through scrub. However from our property we have a peek-a-boo view of the back of the nest and as we have quite a few big trees around us we're quite well placed for observations of the activities of the adults and juveniles throughout the year. The pictures may not always be great but hopefully they'll be interesting!!

The nest is in the riparian area of Husdon Creek at the back of a big vacant lot on upper Field Rd. The adult eagles can sometimes be seen sitting in the trees along Field Rd - I'm sure that is also this couple. The pair moved nest trees in 2019.

2012/13 - 1 eaglet fledged on or before July 26
2013/14 - 1 eaglet fledged, date unknown
2014/15 - 1 eaglet fledged, date unknown
2015/16 - 1 eaglet fledged on or before July 23.
2016/17 - 1 eaglet fledged on or before July 15. Second eaglet fell from nest on Aug 11 but was rescued and taken to Gibsons WIldlife Rehab and OWL for rehab. He was released near his nest on Feb 1 2018. We all wish him a long and happy life living wild and free with many thanks to all that helped get him there :)
2017/18 - 1 eaglet fledged on or before July 16. Thread here here
2018/19 - No eaglets seen or heard this season. Hoping for better luck next year :luck:
2019/20 - New nest location. 2 eaglets seen in the nest Jun 6. 1 eaglet fledged on or before July 27
2020/21 - 2 successful fledges, # 1 on or before July 20. # 2 on or before July 27
2021/22 - Nesting activity seen in March but no fledges this season :(

Last week Ma and Pa were definitely doing some nest repairs. I saw 1 adult skipping about in some big Douglas Firs near the nest tree seemingly eyeing up some branches. Then a few moments later I heard an enormous crack high up in the trees. It was out of my sight but I just caught a glimpse of some eagle wings through the trees in the same area. And today an adult flew low overhead carrying some moss toward the trees - so perhaps the finishing touches! :) One pic from Nov 7 of one adult carrying moss to the nest

A few days ago I saw the two adults leaving the nest at first light so perhaps they had been sleeping there together overnight. No pics for this as it was just too dark!

On Nov 10, Ma and Pa were enjoying some synchronized flying together. They flew off into the distance with each other

On Nov 22 a juvenile came to visit. One adult sitting in a shady spot shortly afterwards. Then Ma and Pa moved to their favourite lookout tree ..... to do some looking out together!

On Nov 25 Ma (I think) was looking for some extra branches for their nest and was sitting quite low in a tree. After looking very intently at several branches she snapped one off and flew off towards the nest. The last pic is of the nest later that day... I guess with at least one more stick!

On Dec 25 we had a visit from a lost domestic duck which definitely caught the attention of one of the adults.

The duck was reunited with its owners so the eagles missed out on their duck dinner!

On Jan 15 there was a dispute between 2 adults near the nest tree. I actually saw them almost lock talons as they swirled and whirled.

I wasn't fast enough to get any pics of that but I do have some of them giving each other stink eye from adjoining branches. After a few minutes one flew off away from the nest and the other flew to the nest so I guess they managed to resolve it .... at least for now! :)

The first pics are of one of the adults shouting out to the other with what I assume was a warning before they took to the sky.

And as you can see it was one of our rare snowy days!

And the last pic is from Jan 29 when Ma and Pa are enjoying the late afternoon sun on one of their favourite trees.
