2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:

And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.

We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:

At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.

And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.

With that in mind....

We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.

The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!

I hadn't been by the nest for over a month so stopped by yesterday morning, all was quiet. There were no adults in the area and I also could not see or hear any youngster(s) in the nest, surrounding trees or area. So thinking the eaglet has already fledged as looking back it was mid-July 2019 that the last eaglet fledged.

Thanks Karen. Hoping fledging was successful from their first nest in the new nest tree! :woohoo:

Thank you Sharon for closing last year's thread and readying for this year's. First year in this nest and it looks like there was at least 1 youngster. Hoping it fledged OK and they return here for another successful year.

Drove up to the Kinnikinnick nest March 8 hoping to find someone at home. Sadly not, but the nest is looking good.

The 2022-2023 Season begins here.
I will be checking on it periodically as it is one that Earl & I opened quite a number of years ago. My son and I are in the area periodically.
Notes from Marg, Karen & Sandra.
2008 ?
2009 ?
2010 no eaglets seen
2011 No eaglets seen
2012 Ma & Pa spotted in trees near the nest July .
2013 Eagles were seen November 21 and in December. Nov 21st I was told by a neighbour that they were building a new nest close to the old one. No nest located.
2014 Not used
2015 "
2016 "
2017 Nest being used but fell early June. No sign of a grounded eaglet a few days later.
2018 A feeding was seen occurring in May, 1 eaglet could be heard but after that no sign of eagle activity, sadly.
2019 Karen saw an eaglet in the nest and then who appeared to be a newly fledged eaglet in trees in the immediate area of the nest tree in July. We determine that we finally have a documented fledge here.
2020 The nest disappeared and we were unable to find its replacement. Karen saw an adult perched near the old nest tree. That's the best we can offer this year.
2021 July 9, 2021.
2022 no eaglets seen.

Potentially good news for this nest! I was in the Sechelt this afternoon so took a drive to see if there was any eagle activity at Kinnikinnick, but not really expecting to see anything. The nest appeared to be in good shape but I couldn't see any sign of eagle activity, none in the area, was very quiet.

As I started to take some pictures of what I thought was an empty nest, I saw a bit of movement and then a bit of white appeared! There was an adult deep down in the nest. All I saw was an eye and bit of beak before the head disappeared from view again. But it looks like the nest is being used this year :-)

Awesome Karen! It's amazing what can be hidden in a nest from a prying human! Well done! :thumlft:

Thanks Sandra and Marg! I think it is good news for this nest, stopped in there again on March 26th (bit behind on doing this update) and again could see the top of a white head in the nest :-) Hopefully can stay a bit longer next time to see if there is more activity around the nest i.e. change of guard, food delivery.

Long delay in getting back here, and too late it seems. Could see no eaglet in the nest but did see an adult fly by. Then could hear what I thought was an eaglet calling from the trees in Kinnikinnick Park. Sounded a bit faint, far away. But because it sounded like an eaglet I spent some time trying to track him/her down, looking into the trees, walking around the outside of the park, listening, watching. But low and behold it wasn't an eaglet calling it turned out to be a young Red-tailed hawk who flew out of the trees calling and continued to call as it flew around the outside of the park then higher and higher before disappearing behind the trees, still calling. Did not know they sounded so similiar.

So no idea if the nest did indeed have any fledglings this year.
