Marsh Nest, Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast BC - Seasons 2020-2024

Post by stim » Sun Oct 13, 2019 3:01 pm

Welcome to our nest! Please drop in to post pictures or comments should you see this nest in person or on this forum.
This was a new nest in The Sechelt Marsh in 2017. In 2016 our adults made a couple of attempts to rebuild a fallen nest but high winds took the placed sticks before they were secure. The only new nest found anywhere near was at the top of Porpoise Bay, seen off the Public Pier. We dubbed it the Porpoise Bay nest not knowing if it was by our Marsh couple or an older Porpoise Bay couple thought to be nesting deeper into the stand of trees. A native man who lives across the bay from the nest and who has a relationship with these birds told us that they were the Marsh couple nesting there.
Now with this new nest built back at The Marsh we discovered the Porpoise Bay nest did indeed belong to this couple 2015-16. No nesting has taken place there since they moved back to their Marsh.

The former Marsh nest was discovered by a HWF friend Larry who was visiting us and our nests in 2012. It was a successful nest despite coming down in 2014, rebuilt and blew down again July 2015. They have changed trees for the 2016 season and now have moved back to a new tree in The Marsh, a Sitka Spruce.

2012 - 2 eaglets seen in July
2013 - 2 eaglets seen named Sea and Shell
2014 -2 eaglets seen. Nest was blown down during a storm July 2, eaglets fledged as far as we know.
2015 -January 27, a new nest was spotted in the same spot in the nest tree by Marg, a local HWF member. Both eaglets branched then fledged even though the nest collapsed and they had to spend a couple of weeks branching in the nest tree without a nest. The eaglets were named by our member Aspen's children... Chase & Sky!
2016-Two attempts to start a new nest were noted early in the season but the placed twigs blew down in storms. Then no evidence of nest building as a new nest appeared on Porpoise Bay.
2017-This couple built in a new tree in the Marsh, hatched 2 eaglets who somehow ended up on the ground near the end of June and were revived at OWL. Aug 1 they were both returned and released within the nesting territory. Sadly we did not know this had happened until Karen heard about and shared the information after the fact.
2018-2 youngsters hopefully fledged successfully.
2019-Both Heather and I saw movement indicative of there being 2 eaglets in this nest but only 1 was seen to be branching and to have fledged.
2020-a friend who lives across the street from this nest has reassured me that 2 eaglets fledged this year. Yay!

Thanks for opening the new thread Sandra! Fingers crossed for another successful season :)

I visited the Marsh last Sunday and saw an adult flying into the nest with a big stick! I didn't have a camera or binos with me so lost sight of the adult somewhere around the nest. But a couple of mins later s/he flew off into the branches of a tree near the alternate nest tree - minus the stick so s/he must have found a spot for it :)

2019/20 has begun I think!

Thank you for opening this thread Sandra! And great news Heather! I've driven by the Marsh a couple of times in the past few weeks and haven't seen any activity at, or near, the nest so glad you did see he/or she there, and with a stick too.

Was at the Marsh on Nov 1 to find Pa in his perch tree, the old nest tree. Suddenly there was lots of calling by 2 eagles and Ma appeared perched beside him. I loved hearing the calling as well as seeing them together. :luck:

Sorry to take so long posting these pictures, I was in Sechelt on November 30th and did a quick "loop" around the Marsh, it was a dreary drizzly day so didn't expect to see much but then heard an eagle calling and looked over towards the nest and saw one of the adults in the nest, quickly followed by the second adult!

The pictures were taken from inside the Marsh near the bench closest to the nest.

A quick stop passing by this nest Feb 8 found Pa in his perch tree in the old nest tree and the nest looking good and ready for use again this year.

I was walking around the marsh this morning and heard an eagle calling from inside the nest and another from a tree closer to the road. I couldn't see either of them but I heard the calls from the nest a few times while I was there.

Maybe somebody is incubating?!?! :luck: :luck: :luck:
