Photos from my visit to the nest with a friend a couple of weeks ago, April 17:

This looks like Pa. I suspect Ma was down in the nest. What a perfect day it was!

Hi Sandra, I didn't think we saw any eagles the day we were there?

Through the telescope today:

My neighbour has 2 lilac trees and one is blocking most of the view but I managed to get this picture (I had to move around a lot to set it up). Although I see the eagles there I haven't been able to spot any young ones.

The nest is just to the right of the arrow, please enlarge.

You are right Marg. I saw the eagles there with another friend on April 17. Sorry about that.

Hi everyone, I sent an email to my friend who lives near the Stalashen nest because I haven't been able to spot any eaglets when I check through my telescope....and here's his reply:
We have only seen the parents this year and no eaglets. It’s been a couple of years now that we haven’t seen any eaglets. I hope everything is okay with the eagles as they don’t seem to be interested in a family.

Is that normal/usual that an adult pair will still have a territory and nest but no youngsters for a few years ?

I've recently met someone that lives on the water side of the road there so will message her and ask if she watches the nest and if she's seen any evidence of any eaglets this year. Just in case she's seen anything different.

David Hancock says it sometimes takes a couple of years for a new adult eagle to get the mating and nesting thing going properly. Was hoping by this year they would have it together but possibly not. It certainly looked like nesting was going on earlier. Hopefully your friend can give us some reassurance one way or the other.

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:

And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.

We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
Image

At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.

And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.

With that in mind....

We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.

The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!

Hi Karen, I wondered if the person you met has seen any eaglets this year? I will send my contact a message. Thanks. BTW he also lives on the water side of the road.
Added: Neighbours reported that they had seen no eaglets this year. :(

This will be the start of the 2021-2022 Season!

I checked the nest this morning, through the telescope and saw an eagle at the top of the tree. :woohoo:
About 2 hrs. later it was perched on a favourite branch. The season has begun. :)

4.55pm October 3, I saw Ma and Pa in the nest tree. One on a branch on the left and one in the middle of the tree on a branch! Let's hope for some eaglets this season.

:D This morning I looked through the telescope and saw 4 eagles perched there. One at the top and the others in branches lower down. I have seen more than our local two in the Stalashen nest tree before probably around this time of the year.
Picture quality not good today but you can see them.

Wow! I recall them entertaining this time of year before. Lots of seafood blown in underwater and on the beach perhaps? I am thrilled that their nest still looks so good after the very significant winds and rainfall we just underwent.
Thanks Marg! :w00t:

I have noticed a branch that was hanging down from previous storms has now blown down (it was to the left of where the eagle at the bottom is perched).
