Stalashen Bald Eagle Nest, Sunshine Coast B.C. Season 2019-2020

Post by Marg » Wed Oct 02, 2019 9:36 am

ON SEPT 30 I WROTE:
At around 5:30pm September 30 I spotted an eagle in the nest tree couldn't tell if it was Ma or Pa. :woohoo: I have locked the 2018-2019 thread.

OCTOBER 1 AT AROUND 5:30PM we saw 2 eagles in the nest tree.

Start of the new Season!

Welcome to this thread. If you visit the Stalashen nest in Sechelt you are welcome to post comments and pictures here.

Earl & I have been watching this nest in Sechelt from our living room, through a telescope and binoculars. The nest is located at the corner of Stalashen Drive and Titalshen Avenue. We have been following this nest since 2008. When we first started reporting on the nest we had talked to a few of the people living close to the nest and they said that it has been there over 20 years. Unfortunately, it did blow down in July 2009 after a windstorm but we are happy to tell you that the eagles built a new nest. When the nest blew down one of the eaglets had branched and the 2nd one was fine also, the eagles fed them on a branch before they fledged. We look through our telescope at this nest which is about a mile and a half away. We can only see them clearly in the morning or evening due to the glare from the water and thermal interference.

Added July 16, 2017. Sandra was told by neighbours that this nest is 50 yrs. old (could even be older than that even) when his wife moved there she was 1 she's now 51.

2009 - 2 eaglets not named. Fledged.
2010 - 1 eaglet Sunny. Fledged.
2011 - 1 eaglet Bluster June 21 Bluster branched. Fledged.
2012 - 1 eaglet Pacer June 27 Pacer branched. Fledged.
2013 - 1 eaglet Hydan June branched. Fledged.
2014 - 2 eaglets branched ..... Fledged July 16.
2014 - Sep 28, 5:50pm Ma/Pa Stalashen back!
2015 - 2 eaglets branched.......Fledged
2015 - Sep 30 Ma/Pa returned.
2016 - 1 eaglet, Orel fledged June 28.
2016 - Sep 19 one eagle returned.
2017 - Two eaglets branched one fledged June 30 2017 the other one a few days later.
2017 - Oct. 1 Ma or Pa returned.
2018 - sadly 2 eaglets hatched but did not make it......
2019 - One eaglet this year and it branched/fledged.

2019 This year thankfully one eaglet fledged! :D

2018 At the beginning of this season we thought that there were 2 eaglets in this nest but on May 19 we could only see one eaglet through the telescope. We don't know what happened but what was believed to be an eagle wing was found on the ground by two of our members Karen H and Aspen. Karen H stated "At the time we didn't know if it was from the missing eaglet or another bird". As stated on the thread I contacted Gibsons Wildlife but they had not had any report of an eaglet found on the ground.
2018 - September 18 Ma or Pa returned (I assume it is one of them)...

Yesterday I observed Ma/Pa in the nest tree at the top. I do believe we'll have an eaglet or two. :) Earl at a different time saw them both (in a different area) but engaging in the same activity.

Today we saw them both in the nest tree and earlier one was in the nest tree on a branch and the other in the perch tree.

We were at FVBEF in Harrison Mills BC and many eagles were there.

We still see one or two eagles Ma & Pa at the Stalashen Nest. Yesterday I looked through our telescope and saw one fly out of the nest tree. :)

Through the telescope: I saw Ma and Pa in the nest tree early in the day one on a branch the other in the nest.
We saw lots of eagles soaring in a thermal today not far from our house. Not a good day for taking pics I believe I took it yesterday.

Through the telescope

Ma & Pa Stalashen are still around protecting their nest. Have seen them many times.
I saw both there one on a favourite branch and one at the top of the tree but the time I got my camera out the one at the top had flown away!

I have been checking on the Stalashen nest but not posted anything lately but here's a pic taken yesterday one in the nest and one in the tree. They are incubating. Sorry but the picture is a little blurry.

We've missed your photos here Marg and I'm so glad you have found incubating happening. I haven't been out with my camera and feel I'm missing the fun out there. Soon I hope! I bet the incubating find made your day!

Fund Drive for Hard Drives

Good afternoon, everyone! I have just learned that we do not have the hard drives we need to record our cams as we approach little chick time - and we do not have the funds necessary to buy them.

These are the high resolution drives that are connected directly to the cams at the site, making it possible to record high quality videos of events at the nests - and we usually have them up and running before the eggs are laid. As you know, we already have eggs at three of our four nests, and they are likely any day now at the fourth nest - so time is of the essence.

Our tech person Ken is estimating that it will cost about $7000 to buy the high quality, high capacity drives needed for our 9 cams, and while we are keeping up with our regular monthly expenses, we don't have the extra money needed to buy and install the hard drives.

I know this is a hard time financially for many of us, with many businesses closed - but it may also be a time when some of us are staying home and watching the eagles after cancelling planned trips or dinners out - and I'd like to ask those who can to contribute towards these hard drives.

Just checked the nest about 8a.m.through our telescope and saw one on a branch and the other on the edge of the nest as I watched the one on the nest flew up to Ma and I witnessed action. The time I got my camera it was too late they had left the branch.

Nice timing Marg! Have they continued to incubate since your March 9 posting? Behaviour you witnessed seems a little odd 3 weeks later! I wonder what's going on.

Thanks for this Marg. I never thought mating would continue after egg laying but it does make sense in case there is a loss of egg(s), more can be produced. :thumlft:
