Coal Point Eagle Nest, North Saanich BC - 2019-2024 Seasons

Post by sassyk » Fri Sep 27, 2019 4:46 pm

Welcome to the Coal Point Eagles thread for the 2019-2024 seasons.

I have been aware of this nest which is on private property for a few years but didn't visit it until this past nesting season. According to a neighbour there have been many eaglets raised to fledging in this nest, and there were 2 eaglets this past season.

Observations, photos and videos of these eages are welcome on this thread if you visit the area.

Observations and photos of these eagles for the 2018-2019 season can be viewed here and here.

I did a tour of the nests on the Saanich Peninsula yesterday. The nest looked like it had a few new sticks added.

One of the adults was perched at the top of the nest tree on the other side and wasn't visible at first. Then it hopped to a lower branch and sat looking out at its territory and at us.

I visited the nest area this past Sunday and did not see or hear any eagles in the area. It appears the nest hasn’t been
used and unfortunately there were no neighbours outside to chat with. I will visit again in the next couple of weeks.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I have not been able to get out to check the activities of the eagles. Therefore this thread will be continuing to include observations, photos & videos of the eagles for the 2020/2021 nesting season. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the eagles will produce offspring this season :luck:

I visited the nest area on Oct. 20th and spotted one of the eagles perched high above the nest half hidden.

I visited the nest area yesterday with my birding partner and we were pleased to see one of the eagles perched beside the nest.

I visited the nest area yesterday with my birding partner. We didn't see or hear any eagles in the area. However, when I zoomed in on some of my photos I think I can see part of a white head near the middle of the nest :woohoo: There was a lot of whitewash on the road and foliage near the nest tree.

I visited the nest area on Apr. 13th but did not see or hear any eagles in the area. However, there could have been one down in the nest incubating :luck:

I visited the nest area with my birding partner on June 1st and saw one of the adults perched above the nest. It was panting and holding its wings out to cool off. It was quite hot on that day. We could see an eaglet moving around in the nest behind all the sticks and little branches of the tree and I managed to get one photo showing its head. We spoke to a neighbour who said there is only 1 eaglet this year.

The second adult flew in and landed in the nest but we couldn't see if it was delivering prey.

I visited the nest area on July 4th. An adult was perched at the top of the nest tree peeking through the branches.

A short while later it dropped to a lower branch closer to the nest.

It dropped down to a lower branch beside the nest. One of the eaglets got up and started squawking.

I visited the nest area on July 19th but did not see or hear any eagles or eaglets in the area. A neighbour came to chat and said she had seen both eaglets that morning flapping and jumping in the tree. She had spoken to another neighbour who said both eagles were out flying that afternoon :woohoo:

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
Image

And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.

We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
Image

At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.

And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.

With that in mind....
Image

We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.

The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!
